Getty ImagesSay what now?
Alabama appears to have opened and shut a potential NCAA violations case without reaching out to either the SEC or the NCAA, all while successfully keeping the event out of the headlines.
According to ESPN’s Joe Schad, Alabama’s compliance department sent a cease-and-desist letter to the owner of a Tuscaloosa men’s clothing store asking that he not use the likeness of any college athletes.
Including, apparently, Tide running back Trent Richardson, among other Tide players.
Alabama’s compliance department reportedly looked into the relationship of the “T-Town” store owner and Richardson, and concluded that there were no benefits or discounts exchanged between the two, or any other athletes for that matter. Compliance officials investigated autographs hanging in the store (although no mention is made as to who the autographs are from) and are currently monitoring the situation.
Under NCAA rules, student-athletes are not allowed to be featured in any commercial advertising.
So T-Town was using player images in its advertising and the Alabama compliance department sent the owner a cease-and-desist order? Isn’t that what a compliance department is supposed to do? Why would they need SEC or NCAA help with that?
Oh … and that part about keeping it out of the headlines … obviously not.
I have player autographs on my wall, too. Should ESPN come monitor those? Only if they’ll pay my fumigating costs.
Deb, aren’t you a bit old to be collecting college player autographs (won’t even mention putting them on your wall)?
“Under NCAA rules, student-athletes are not allowed to be featured in any commercial advertising.”
Unless, of course, it is something for which the NCAA gets paid a handsome royalty, in which case the NCAA is more than willing to let them be featured.

And many of you still don’t see the level of hypocrisy that keeps pouring out of the NCAA in regards to these student athletes..
Sounds like Alabama handled this matter in a professional and classy way.
Neither of those adjectives can be used with the NCAA.
@ gorilladunk that was a great comment deb needed it
gorilladunk …
First, baby, you don’t know how old I am. I’ve always been this sassy. Second, I have a small gym in my home that’s decorated with football memorabilia, some of it signed. I wasn’t aware there was an age limitation for collecting signed sports memorabilia. But I’m not big on following asinine societal rules set up by people like Emily Post and gorilladunk. I wear black year round, too.
@paparoach25 …
Really, Deb needed to be told she’s too old to collect sports memorabilia? Why?
But at least gorilladunk is man enough to do his own talking instead of sitting back like a spineless cockroach and waiting for someone else to do it for him.
I’ll be here when you find your stones.
@whatswiththehate …
I think most of us would agree with you about the NCAA’s hypocrisy–among other things. Well … I can’t speak for the gorillas and roaches, but most of the intelligent commenters would agree.
@deb that was the response I expected thank you
:’(
I’ve never had an altercation with you or given you any reason to cheer on someone else making a nasty unprovoked comment toward me. You behaved like a pig and got the response you provoked. Your username was well-chosen. Dirty. And spineless.
@ deb thanks again your proving my point every time you. try to nice for once
p.s. name of a band
Sounds like Bama did good in this case. My guess is most schools are dealing with bunches of these types of things successfully all the time.
Problem is our friends at the NCAA have sooooo many rules, you can’t catch em all. And if you are chasing after these little things, some big things my get by you.
I go back to the Nebraska story a few weeks ago where Osborne reported the Cornhuskers cause athletes had used scholarship money to by supplemental books, not just the required books. Darn those ‘Huskers for learnin!
paparoach25 …
Cake is the name of a band, too, but that doesn’t mean the word has no other meaning. Funny, but I when paparoach25 is being a jerk to me on a blog, I’m more inclined to think of the filthy pest that infests garbage than of Papa Roach, the rock band.
My posts focus on people’s comments. I don’t just attack individuals out of the blue and without provocation. And I certainly wouldn’t sit back like a spider (better?) hoping for other commenters to deliver jabs I thought were “deserved.” I’m not afraid to do my own dirty work. gorilladunk was just taking a silly jab. You’re acting like you’re on some kind of vendetta you’re not man enough–or witty enough–to execute on your own. Gee, I can’t even give you a “nice try” … assuming that’s what you were shooting for in your convoluted sentence.
@ deb u did it again thanks
why so angry all the time.
cheer up!!!
Aww, little cockroach, you don’t understand me at all. I’m quite charming and well behaved in person. So I’m never more cheerful than when I get to pull the legs off insects online. You’ve never seen me angry.
I’m going to be bigger person here and stop bashing others
Uh-huh … cockroaches do get mighty big sometimes, especially in the South. I keep an exterminator under contract
you mean Bammer got away with another let send the fbi on this one! pft this stuff out control one school gets away stuff self imposed bull crap if the did wrong ncaa should be only one bringing the hammer!

Judging by the time and coherence of your posts, I’d say you’ve gotten a fast start on a weekend-long bender. Assuming you are not face-down in a pool of your own vomit by now, allow me to point out that fans of programs who have NCAA investigators currently on their campus have no room to be talking about self-reported possible secondary violations for another team. If the NCAA has any concerns that Alabama has not done its due diligence or is not telling the whole story, it will be more than happy to bring a non-weather-related storm to Tuscaloosa. After all, as you Barners like to point out, ‘Bama is still on probation from previous misdeeds, so that in and of itself should be sufficient proof that the Tide does not have an immunity shield from the NCAA.
Nope no candy @$$ drunk like you. Yea amazing ten year cashing in books some how got self impose punishments bull. Now 1993 Auburn got hammer and he never paid player.
First of all, the textbook deal had nothing to do with recruiting or a competitive advantage on the field. It was a case of athletes allowing friends of theirs to get textboks through the athletes’ scholarship. The athletes themselves did not receive a direct benefit from this. And considering that ‘Bama did get an extension of its probation along with having to vacate 17 wins (yeah, nothing more than a petty record-books annoyance, but still) I’d say that was hardly a shaking-finger-in-the-face punishment.
As far as 1993 goes, you can thank your own guy for that. Eric Ramsey turned you in, and had tape recordings of coaches who offered him money when he asked for it. Pat Dye tried to cover it up, and Auburn got slapped for it. There was no self-reporting involved, so the punishment was harder as a result. It really isn’t that hard to understand.
NCAA vilation is NCAA vilation think you going hammer one team you hammer them all! Bammer gets pick the punishment nah should not as many times you break the rules. Yes I heard the tape Pat was ask to help a sick mom and he took advatage of that. Pat step down Auburn wasn’t allow to go to bowl game and there was no money ever changed hands! But 10 years was NCAA fine for bammer and year you had give up wins u sucked anyways. the same year you go NC game a lot people think that shouldnt have happen.
@paparoach25 …
Who let in the drunk guy?
@ deb so true so true
Maze and Trent are ineligible by NCAA for receipt of improper benefits humm Bammer is going down. Of wait NCAA always goes lite on Bammer.
I
