Georgia Tech assistant gets one-game suspension from NCAA

And, no, it’s not because of the schools’ most recent NCAA woes.

Georgia Tech co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer has been suspended for one game however -- the Yellow Jackets’ season opener against Western Carolina -- for making impermissible phone calls to recruits, a violation that dates back to over a year ago.

According to records obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, GT coaches and a staff member made 22 impermissible calls to 12 different prospects from February through June 2010. Under NCAA rules, coaches are permitted to make one call to a high school prospect or his parents between April 15 and May 31.

It’s certainly not the most serious of violations, but the NCAA added the suspension to Spencer on top of other, minor self-imposed sanctions by Tech, which included a two-week ban in September 2010 on calling any of the prospects involved.
