Rutgers gets good news, bad news on roster front

So, which do you want first? The good news? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

In a press release, Rutgers announced that Edmond Laryea has been granted a sixth season of eligibility by the ever-benevolent NCAA. the linebacker had missed the entire 2007 season as well as all but two games in 2010, leading to the decision to tack on another year of eligibility.

On the Scarlet Knights’ post-spring depth chart, Laryea was listed as No. 2 on the depth chart.

On the not-so-good side of the ledger, the school also announced that two players will no longer continue playing football, including their backup quarterback. Senior Steve Shimko, along with junior running back Aaron Hayward, have been forced to give up the game because of injury. Both now-former players will become student assistants on the football team for the 2011 season.

Shimko, who has battled shoulder issues the past couple of years, had been Rutgers’ “No. 2" QB coming out of spring, but that job behind starter Chas Dodd will now come down to a pair of true freshmen -- Gary Nova and Mike Bimonte.
