Surprisingly, an arrest led to Illini LB’s suspension

Saturday, Ben (currently taking suggestions for nicknames for the new guy; B-Kerch will be violently dismissed) astutely noted that Illinois linebacker Ashante Williams has been indefinitely suspended for violating unspecified team rules.

Apparently, and besides the fact that it should be common sense, captaining a moving vehicle after tipping back a few too many is one of those unspecified team rules.

According to the Champaign News-Gazette, Williams was arrested very early Saturday morning and charged with driving under the influence. The arrest occurred at 1:37 a.m. local time, and here’s the News-Gazette‘s account, via a police report, as to how the events transpired:

An Urbana police officer stopped him for an alleged traffic violation and could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Williams. The report said Williams showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests and admitted he had been drinking alcohol, the report said.

Williams played in 13 games last season as a defensive back, but was penciled in as a starter at linebacker heading into summer camp. The News-Gazette indicates there could be a game or two suspension in the offing based on precedent.

And, apropos of absolutely everything, and hoping this post and these links will find their way to Williams and any other person who may consider doing what Williams is accused of, we present to you former All-SEC Alabama running back Siran Stacy. Get behind the wheel drunk after reading THIS. And THIS. And THIS.
