Tragic: former Texas A&M RB recruit shot and killed in Oklahoma

There’s some really awful news coming out of Cartwright, Oklahoma today, as former Texas A&M commit D.J. Jones died from gunshot wounds somewhere between 6 and 6:30 this morning, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations said today.

Police are still looking for three suspects in the shooting and details at this point are very, very sketchy.

Jones, 19, was a four-star recruit out of Denison, Texas and committed to the Aggies in 2010. However, Jones returned to Denison before ever playing a down for A&M.

“I was notified this afternoon,” A&M head coach Mike Sherman said in a statement on Jones’ death. “He should be going to college and playing football somewhere. This is a tragic end to a talented young man’s life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time.”

Jones mother told KXII-TV that her son was going to play football this fall at Prairie View A&M on an athletic scholarship.

What an absolutely tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers with Jones’ family during this most difficult time.
