Starter among two Aztecs suspended for at least one game

When San Diego State takes the field for the 2011 season opener against Cal Poly, they’ll do without the services of a pair of players, including a starting member of their defense.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, first-year head coach Rocky Long has suspended safety Brandon Davis and backup tight end Hunter Hewitt for at least the first game of the season due to a violation of unspecified team rules. Long also said that he “would bet they don’t play in second game” either.

“I like both those guys,” Long said. “It’s hard on me to do those sorts of things, but that’s the way it is. We expect every kid to act a certain way, and if they don’t act a certain way, we have a way to discipline them and give them a second chance if they get through the discipline. I would expect, because I trust both those kids, they would be back with the team.”

Last season, Davis started 10 games in the secondary for the Aztecs. Andrews played in all 13 games last season, starting one of those contests.
