Kansas dealing with a pair of player arrests

It’s been relatively quiet on the arrest front the past couple of weeks, but, thanks to a pair of Kansas football players, the Jayhawks doubled down to ensure the “Days Without an Arrest” ticker gets reset to double zeros.

First off, linebacker Benjamin Heeney was arrested in mid-July and charged with driving under the influence and racing on a highway. Details of the events surrounding the arrest were not available, the Lawrence Journal-World reported.

Heeney was a three-star member of KU’s 2011 recruiting class.

In other KU legal news, the Journal-World also reports that running back DeShaun Sands (pictured) was arrested Saturday night on an outstanding warrant. Sands received a misdemeanor disturbing the peace citation back in April, and failed to appear at a June court date to answer the complaint.

This was the second time in less than a year Sands has been arrested on a failure-to-appear warrant; in October, Sands failed to show in court for a speeding ticket. The sophomore was suspended for one game as a result of the issue.

Sands played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman last season, totaling 211 yards and a touchdown. Sands wasn’t listed on KU’s two-deep depth chart heading into summer camp.

Head coach Turner Gill is aware of both incidents involving his players, and it handling any punishment internally.
