Summerlin tabbed as Memphis’ starting QB over Wake transfer

Last month, Skylar Jones opted to transfer from Wake Forest to Memphis in search of more playing time during his final season of collegiate eligibility.

At least for now, that search has been suspended.

Memphis head coach Larry Porter announced Friday that Andy Summerlin will be the Tigers’ starting quarterback for the season opener against Mississippi State on Sept. 1. It will be the redshirt sophomore’s first career start at this level.

Summerlin transferred to Memphis from Coffeyville Community College last January. He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury during spring practice last year.

Jones will be the Tigers’ No. 2 QB, while true freshman Taylor Reed (no relation) is listed No. 3 on the depth chart.
