There aren’t too many times in my life I wish I’d been stripped of the ability to see. Tonight’s one of those times.
In an effort to out-ugly Georgia’s Nike couture from Saturday night, Maryland unveiled new Under Armour uniforms for their opener against Miami that are at best something you would see loading into the starting gate at the Preakness and at worst something Lady Gaga would say “dayum!” upon seeing.
Below is the photo of uniforms described in a UA press release as “[i]nspired by characteristics specific to the Maryland state flag and the University of Maryland… the jersey numbers, cleats, and gloves all feature a custom Maryland flag print”:
That image does not do the helmet justice. The one below does:
That’s right. That’s a two-sided helmet, apparently designed that way on purpose by normal, high-functioning — and presumably mushroom-free — adults.
So, what say ye? Thumbs up or thumbs down to the latest fashion atrocity wrought on the world of college football? Have your say below.

uuuuuuugly! I wonder if the ugly unis contributed to Oregon, Georgia, and others teams wearing them to lose? Just a thought. Ugly unis, ugly play. That’s consistent!
My folks live in Ocean City, MD. Maryland has a very cool state flag, and those uniforms are actually trying incorporate the state flag, but they fail miserably.
The Ravens unis actually also have a bit of the state flag on them and look pretty cool.
Othen than the uniform issue, entertaining game. Never thought i’d be mildly pulling for Miami, but the Penn Stater in me wants to see Golden and D’Onofrio do well.
If I was the President or A.D. at Maryland I would have never let them run run out on the field wearing these. While it is the game that counts; a team’s uniforms do speak for the university and its traditions too.
When I first turned the game on I thought for a moment that this was some type of CFL or European league football or something.
It is almost shameful to the University of Maryland. I have no ties to this state or school-just a college football fan.
Hey John, they maybe mushroom free, but someone schedule the decision maker for a psychologist’s exam for dementia.
Without redeeming social importance . . . .
JT–it might help readers if you posted an image of the Maryland state flag.
@burnt: For some reason the pic of the flag wasn’t appearing in the upper right of the post. Worked on it a bit and it’s showing up now.
I’m not sure it’s the concept, or the fact the Maryland state flag doesn’t work well with that concept.
If for some reason KU or KSU ran out there with uni’s that incorporate the KS Flag with the university logo I might think it was cool.
Both the Ravens and UM are really butt ugly.
How about the fact that the quarterback is trying to find receivers with 2 different colors on. Imagine 2 receivers crossing 5 or 10 yards downfield. One is wearing red, while the other is wearing yellow. It must be the tiniest bit confusing. Remember the days when uni’s were worn so you know who is on your team? Those were the good ole days!
These uni’s must have stripped Miami of the ability to see for about the first 2o minutes.
Bill cosby and ray charles must have design these
A friend posted to me not long ago about Maryland’s cool unis. Since I’m not watching that game, told her I’d have to wait ’til I can see them. She mentioned Under Armour, and I thought since it wasn’t Nike, it couldn’t be that bad.
It’s worse. It’s actually worse.
It’s like a parrot threw up on a player.
I think that these unis are awesome. The one’s that were bad this week were Boise’s & uga’s.
Back to the MD unis all this is, is a pissing match between (Plank the founder of Underarmor and a MD grad) vs (Knight the founder of Nike and a Oregon grad).
So start to look for all of the Underarmor schools to begin having as many different unis as the Nike schools.
Those turtle shell helmets were bad ass though!!!
Hope I can get one in a riddell mini???
Being born, raised, and reside in the great state of MD I do appreciate Mr. Plank’s effort to showcase the flag in the uniforms. They are definetly different, and based on ESPN’s coverage of them, folk like Lebron James tweeting on them, and this thread on this site, they have had the desired affect. Mr. Plank said UMD was Under Armor’s flagship school (he is an alum), and that he was taking the uniforms to the next level. He wasn’t lying.
And say what you want about the helmuts, but they are by far way better than that turtle shell bull **** the Terps were wearing in pre-game warmups. Those helmuts are just plain stupid looking.
I can’t believe no one has brought up the arm length MD flag opera gloves yet. Hideous. Like watching a football game at Medieval Times.
A salute to Maryland for wearing those visually agonizing helmets….but they won! I’d pick them over Georgia’s vomit domes any day of the week.
My thumbs are so far down on these unis, I think I’m just going to cut my thumbs off and throw them down a well.
Buttugly!
They looked as good as Matt Millen sounded.
@ihateannouncers
A pile of human waste looks better than Millen sounds. I’m not even a Lions fan. Every time I hear Millen speak I immediately start thinking worst GM ever. This is the guy who destroyed a storied NFL franchise.
Is there even one NFL player drafted by Matt Millen still in the NFL… I think maybe Roy Williams(the WR)
I’d rather their entire athletic department adopt this style than hear Matt Millen on TV or Radio.
Glad MD won but I expected to see Harvey Dent as Two Face from Batman take off a MD helmet.
It’s good in theory, not so much in practice.
I kept expecting to see the trained elephants and the lion tamer come out at any moment.
These uniforms are one of those things that should have been stopped at the drawing board stage.
Same goes for Georgia’s new threads.
Somehow, absolutely hideous has become the new cool.
Anyone else for a public burning like way back in the sixties when the NFL’s Denver Broncos burned those second hand vertically striped socks?
Mom always said, “if you can’t say something nice…”
Absolutely loved them.
Best team won, and the best unis won. Why not go like penn state. BORING. Get over it. Maybe they were distacting enough to upset the Miami convicts.
They look like they borrowed an outfit from the queen in the new Alice in Wonderland…however they are growing on me. But they’ll never wear them again, they’re the new Oregon Ducks.
I love the Terps – second only to PSU. But those uniforms tell me it’s time for the NCAA to step in with some basic style mandates before things get out of hand !
Good morning, Deb.
I’m usually pretty conservative when it comes to uniforms – I’d say Penn State, Bama, and Michigan have the best – and I’ve mostly HATED the new one-off unis that teams are wearing lately (I thought Georgia’s the other night might have been the worst of all [especially for a team that usually looks pretty sharp]) – but I gotta say that I kinda liked the Terps last night.
The uniform looked a little confusing and strange, but then again so does the Maryland flag.
I’m still not exactly sure what a Tar Heel or a Hoosier is either, but I love the schools whose identities relate to their states. I guess I’d be interested to know if the alumni of the school and Maryland residents liked them or not. If they did, the school should keep them going. If not, try something else similar but perhaps less unusual.
I don’t care for MD’s new court jester uniforms, but I still think Oregon’s are uglier, and Boise State gets special mention just for those hideous pimp shoes. But I can watch them w/o real visual discomfort, as long as they never play on that godawful Boise State turf.
Maybe I’m just getting old.
Not that it’s a bad-looking uniform…but to have the state flag as the dominant design theme…is a bit corny.
Yes, the school does identify itself very closely to the state, but the athletic uniform should reflect more towards the school — they couldn’t figure out how to “jazz-up” a terrapin so they just went with the state flag? Many state school’s mascots reflect that of the state they’re in (Buckeyes, Longhorns, Hurricanes, etc) — using the state flag isn’t all that interesting.
If I were on the team and forced to play in those f@#$ing HIDEOUS uniforms, I would have tracked down the person who designed them, and the imbeciles at the university who approved them, and punch them square in their pie holes. My god, those things were just plain awful.

==================
I stopped reading right there.
There must have been a contest between Georgia, Maryland, and Oregon to determine which of the three could field the most hideous uniforms. The good news for each school is this ~ ~ YOU ARE ALL WINNERS. Oregon’s use of that phosphorescent chartreuse is strategic. If the stadium lights go out, it can still have a passing game as that crap will glow in the dark. I think the Maryland uni is novel and laughable, but the Georgia Dawgs are simply ugly. Nothing stands out like ugly ~ in simplicity.
beyond ugly
I can’t tell if the people who like these uniforms are kidding or just so addicted to Pokémon they need their football teams to wear the same color scheme.
Hi, latrobe21
Now look, I don’t know if one has anything to do with the other. But ever since I looked at those uniforms, the sight in my right eye is gone. My hemoroids are acting up, and I have fluid oozing out of my ears. (although the ear thing us probably due to Matt Millen).
Those unis are awesome. People are jealous that their respective schools cant do anything like that. Maryland has a distinctive flag and Under Armour nailed the design. I can understand people saying they were a little busy and they were, but I loved them. As a Maryland alum, I may be a bit biased.
Can we sue UnderArmour for voluntarily inducing blindness?
@kinggw …
People are “jealous” because their teams can’t have uniforms like that? Seriously? How old are you? Any team can design a Pokémon suit, sweetie. Most of us support schools that have trophy rooms. We’re not jealous of your uniform.
@king – I’m jealous of those unis like I’m jealous of somebody who just slammed their private parts in a car door while vomiting their guts out because of food poisoning.
under armor is obvioulsy trying to do with Maryland what Nike did with oregan
@dkhhuey
Well put sir.
I’d rather get a prostate exam from an NBA center than watch Mary-land in those again. That or eat dog doo and roll around in poison ivy.
