Lost opening weekend gets worse for Duke

It was truly a kick-in-the-gut -- or an area a foot south -- first week of the season all around for Duke. Not only did the Blue Devils lose their opener to I-AA Richmond, at home no less, it turns out they’ve lost last season’s leading rusher as well.

The school released its injury report Thursday, and running back Desmond Scott has been officially ruled as out for the game against No. 6 Stanford. The report only specified that Scott is out due to a leg injury, which makes sense as left the field this past weekend’s game with the aid of crutches.

Scott finished second on the team last weekend in rushing with 80 yards -- on just 11 carries -- and had one of the three Blue Devils’ rushing touchdowns in the 23-21 loss.

Last season as a true sophomore, Scott led Duke in rushing with 530 yards.
