Updated: Texas has enough of Gilbert, wins with McCoy

When Garrett Gilbert was tentatively given the keys to new Texas OC Bryan Harsin‘s offense, it was wondered exactly how much slack he would be given before the Longhorns would decide to go in another direction.

Gilbert, as you’ll recall (and as UT fans try to forget), threw a head-shaking 17 picks last season.

To answer that question, it took eight pass attempts, two completions and two interceptions before Gilbert was benched against BYU this evening.

It was probably the right call. If Mack Brown didn’t do anything, it was possible one of the 100,000 booing fans would have.

Backups Case McCoy, younger brother of Longhorns great Colt McCoy, and David Ash have both seen playing time in the first half as well, with McCoy getting most of the snaps.

The Longhorns’ offense, though, is struggling no matter who takes control. BYU currently leads No. 24 UT 13-3 at the half.

UPDATED 10:16 p.m. ET: On the contrary, whatever adjustments Texas made at halftime worked 0ut. Keeping McCoy under center proved to be a smart move, as Texas came from behind to defeat BYU 17-16.
