Travis Lewis wants to play, probably won’t against FSU

The last we heard of Oklahoma linebacker Travis Lewis, the senior suffered a broken bone in his foot during preseason practice and was expected up to two months, which would include an absence from the all-important Week 3 game against No. 5 Florida State.

Well, it’s just been a little over a month since Lewis’ injury, which would still lead us to believe that he is still a no-go for this weekends match against the Seminoles, but that doesn’t mean Lewis isn’t personally feeling good about his chances to play.

Toe feels amazing . . Just finished jogging and feeling very very optimistic,” Lewis tweeted yesterday. “I can walk and run, pain free without the toe hurting . . . All these equals GAME TIME!

Ah, the competitive spirit. Admirable at all times, stubborn during others.

Whether or not Lewis will actually play, though, is still uncertain and erring on the side of doubtful. In his Monday teleconference, Sooners coach Bob Stoops didn’t have much of an update on Lewis

“He’ll be evaluated today at some point. What time of day that is, I don’t know,” Stoops said. “They’ll let me know once they’ve checked him out. [Lewis playing] is not what I expect. I know Travis. All players are optimistic, but as far as doctors go, it’s not what I expect.”

Not having Lewis when the top-ranked Sooners head to Tallahassee will be tough; Lewis led the team in tackles in each of the last three seasons.

UPDATED 10:50 p.m. ET: Stoops said after practice on Monday that he doesn’t expect Lewis to play this Saturday against FSU and that he’s “a long way from playing.”
