Boise State issues statement on Big East rumors

Boise State v Georgia Getty Images

With the announcement today that the Big East has authorized itself* to engage in conversations about expansion, Boise State’s name has come up as a possible candidate for the beleaguered conference — perhaps as a football-only member. It’s been thought with the BCS brass meeting within the next couple of years to assess future automatic qualifiers that Boise State would be a security blanket for the Big East as they desperately try to keep their head above water in the conference realignment storm.

(*note: technically, it was the presidents authorizing the conference, so who the hell is really in charge here?)

There haven’t been any formal talks yet — publicly, at least — between the two sides, but Boise State president Bob Kustra did issue the following statement that says, just as you would expect, pretty much nothing at all. Here it is; make of it what you will:

“Boise State is excited about playing its first football game in the Mountain West Conference this weekend, and is looking forward to an outstanding inaugural conference season in all sports. The university is pleased to be affiliated with such high-quality institutions, and has great confidence in the future direction of the Mountain West.

“While we are certainly flattered to be mentioned in connection with other conferences, and we hold those leagues in high regard, our current focus is on continuing to build the outstanding athletic programs that have helped make Boise State a popular and compelling national brand.

“The landscape of college athletics is exceptionally fluid, and we are continuing to monitor the situation. We are confident that Boise State will be well positioned for future success, and we will evaluate our status with the best interests of the entire university in mind. Boise State’s athletic achievements, academic and research successes, popularity, and vision for future growth make the university an extremely valuable conference partner.”

    Seriously, go to a BcS conference!!

    Honestly, the Mountain West has more credibility as a football conference than the Big East does next year. And it’s not just because of Boise.

    The NCAA should really strip the Big East of their BCS automatic bid and award it to the Mountain West.

  3. rolltide510 says: Oct 10, 2011 8:54 PM

    Agree with Cabbage. With the conference carousel in full swing, Boise State has every opportunity to become one of the big boys.

    My prediction is that they don’t make any bold moves, because they prefer the glory they get from adoring sportswriters who proclaim them the people’s champion every year.

    The little east is basically a basketball conference and has NO business being an AQ for the BCS. Boise going to the east still wouldn’t make it an AQ.

    Boise State comments sounds like he’s trying to convince the BIG 12 to get off the spot and make an invitation ASAP.

  6. donttouchthedirtypenny says: Oct 10, 2011 8:58 PM

    Big East looking to add Boise and Air Force. Add New Mexico and Hawaii too. That’ll make ‘em legit.

  7. intergalacticbronco says: Oct 10, 2011 9:03 PM

    @rolltide510

    Do you really consider the Big East the ‘Big Boys’? Seriously, minus Syracuse and Pitt, do you really think that a conference of Rutgers, Louisville, UConn, Cincinatti, W. Virginia, South Florida and (probably) Air Force, Navy, ECU and Temple is a significant leap in competition? Additionally, the ‘closest’ away game will be a 3000 miles away so forget going to any away games for most fans. And then the BE is trying to negotiate a $20 mill exit fee.

    So, if Louisville and W.Virginia are the next to leave it’s going to cost Boise $20 mill to leave the Mountain East. No thanks. Hope for the lottery and a Big 12 invite.

  8. pricecube says: Oct 10, 2011 9:16 PM

    @intergalacticbronco

    I am hoping you guys get a Big 12 invite although I realize from a monetary perspective it is unlikely. Your team is totally for real and outside of the TCU game I will be rooting for you…

    sorry to burst everyone’s bubble but Boise State can play with any team and win

  10. bender4700 says: Oct 10, 2011 9:18 PM

    The MWC could have the best teams ever this year, still not a BCS auto conference folks!!!!!!

  11. Deb says: Oct 10, 2011 9:23 PM

    @thefiesty1 …

    It doesn’t sound like Kustra is actively trying to solicit anyone. He’s walking the fine line of reassuring the Mountain West they’re with them for now … while letting other potential suitors know they’re open to offers.

    But if Kustra is pitching woo to the Big 12, I hope Chuck Neinas is listening. The last place on earth the Broncos should consider is the struggling basketball clubhouse of the Big East. Okay, so Boise State isn’t as prominent as other Big 12 insitutions and doesn’t have other dominating sports programs. What it does have is a football program generating a lot of national attention, which means positive press for the Big 12. They could use it, and Boise State could use the credibility of a BCS conference. Win-win for everyone.

    Then let them go into a BCS conference, play a challenging schedule, and prove it. It’s not about bursting bubbles. It’s about walking your talk, talk, talk.

    @fishfan

    Based on????

    Have proof before you make a claim you can’t possibly back up.

    Had you said:

    “Boise is a good team in a non-bcs conference”

    Youd be right, instead of one foolish poster.

  14. bender4700 says: Oct 10, 2011 9:33 PM

    Boise State knows:

    BCS conference = no more 12-0.

    They’re fear is proof. And make no mistake, turning down an auto bcs conference is fear.

    What, are they holding out for the SEC?!?

  15. bender4700 says: Oct 10, 2011 9:39 PM

    Boise can’t say “anyone anytime” when a BcS conference calls.

    Defend publicly saying: “we’d rather play lower teams”.

    Try it

    You have the analytical skills of a garden gnome. How long do you really think the Big East is going to keep its AQ status? You do realize that its courting ‘Temple’ as a full-fledged member, don’t you? Here’s a hint on how to improve your ‘smartness factor’: subtract the teams that have already accepted bids elsewhere, weigh the probability of those that have a good shot of leaving and look at the list of those they are considering extending invites to. Is it really any different than the current makeup of the Mountain West?

    Deb is an SEC homer but at least she realizes the futility of joining a conference that doesn’t have a great shot at keeping its BCS status. I can respect that.

    Do me a favor and admit that you’re hammered like your name implies so that I can have a bit more faith in the youth of america.

  17. bender4700 says: Oct 10, 2011 9:46 PM

    Boise you don’t have the fan base, or the stadium, or the history to be as full of yourself as you are.

    Traveling fans for one game is fun, try 6 or 7. Try getting your ratings up. Get a stadium that holds 70k. Get a donor base that provides you with millions.

    That’s what an elite program does.

  18. bender4700 says: Oct 10, 2011 9:55 PM

    You are as unbiased as they come hey Bronco?

    Yeah, I take anything you say serious.

    Isn’t Boise good enough that if they join the Big East it’d become a great conference?

    Wow, dis ur own team.

  19. bender4700 says: Oct 10, 2011 9:56 PM

    Boise turns down the only BCS conference that acknowledges them and Boise fan is running their mouth.

    Hahhahaa

    Wow

  20. trojanswillrise says: Oct 10, 2011 10:18 PM

    Boise needs to improve their stadium and academics then go in search of an invite to the big12

  21. 10of14 says: Oct 10, 2011 10:19 PM

    Peterson has a “closet deal” already with University of Arizona. He is so done with the non BCS bull and will now compete in the PAC 12…mark it down!

    “Then let them go into a BCS conference, play a challenging schedule, and prove it. It’s not about bursting bubbles. It’s about walking your talk, talk, talk.”

    The Big East really shouldn’t qualify as a BCS conference. Their AQ bid is not long for the world. And honestly, beating up on Cincinnati, UCONN, Louisville, Rutgers, South Florida, and West Virginia shouldn’t impress anybody who actually pays attention to college football any more than Boise’s schedule this year. Boise would play maybe 1-2 tough games a year as a Big East team.

    But if an actual credible BCS conference wanted to invite them, I’m sure they’d listen.

  23. Deb says: Oct 10, 2011 11:03 PM

    @intergalacticbronco …

    I’m an SEC fan, but don’t really think of myself as a “homer” in the strictest sense because I respect the other major conferences. My problem with Boise State isn’t personal–it’s purely a strength-of-schedule issue. (Well, I do hate the blue field, but that’s just a personal preference.) The Broncos have demonstrated their skill against a lot of opponents, including Georgia. But I feel like a tougher season schedule should be required for them to be considered a national football powerhouse.

    Boise State would really benefit from a playoff tournament, which I strongly support. No matter how any team got to the playoffs, if they were good enough to run the table in back-to-back weeks, no one could question that they earned their trophy.

  24. dmcgrann says: Oct 10, 2011 11:10 PM

    possiblecabbage said, “The NCAA should really strip the Big East of their BCS automatic bid and award it to the Mountain West.”

    The NCAA has nothing to do with the BCS. It’s a creation of the conferences that belong to the BCS.
    That’s why the greatest barroom bet of all time is to ask what is the only school to ever win a NCAA Division I Championship in both men’s basketball and football.

    The answer is Villanova. BCS “Champions” are not NCAA “Champions”. The NCAA doesn’t have a formal “championship” for football played at the BCS level,

  25. christopher525 says: Oct 11, 2011 1:00 AM

    They’re holding out for the one conference that SHOULD HAVE invited them to begin with, the Pac 12.

    Take two seconds to look it up then because they are.

  27. boisestatewhodat says: Oct 11, 2011 10:07 AM

    Deb you’re full of it! I too support a playoff system, you know…like the one every other sport at every level uses. But you would not say they earned it…you and all the other silly homers would say…’they played a cupcake schedule then had to play 2 or 3 tough games in a row…that proves nothing.’ Or, better yet, what if no SEC teams got into the playoffs and Boise State had to play 3 teams from the Big East…would you still say they earned it? Like I said…you are full of it!

  28. boisestatewhodat says: Oct 11, 2011 10:11 AM

    The Big East quite simply is not in Boise State’s league…the schedules they play are no tougher than the one Boise State is currently playing. If Boise State is gonna move one program to play on the other side of the country it won’t be for the Big East…it’ll have to be the Big 12 or they’ll wait. You people who say they couldn’t go 12-0 in an AQ conference obviously don’t watch them play. Really, you don’t think BSU could run the table in the Big East, the ACC…hell the SEC East? They are as good as any team in the nation.

  29. paulbrownsrevenge says: Oct 11, 2011 10:23 AM

    Everyone knows Boise can play. The problem is their facilities and not having a basketball team that deserves to be in a major conf.

    No school is dumb enough to join a conference where the closest opponent is 3000 miles away. You might as well tell you fans to piss off. The bigeast is the newest sinking ship. Why would anyone join them now?

  30. boisestatewhodat says: Oct 11, 2011 10:35 AM

    Totally agree paul…Boise State is working on expansion but that stuff takes time. No, they don’t have the 1A history that Ohio State, Nebraska, Texas, OU, LSU, Bama, Florida and the like have…of course not…they’ve only been 1A for a little over 10 years but look how far they’ve come in that short period of time. Its remarkable and unprecedented. Deb and the others on the SEC railroad are threatened by Boise State and don’t know how else to react to their rise other than to state the inherently obvious…the lack of history. Please. Bottom line is…they’re ranked 5th in the nation and have been ranked in the top ten for several years now. They’re included in the top ten by experts in the field of athletics with far more information at their disposal than any of us. Can’t wait for BSU to face the loser of LSU vs Alabama in the Sugar Bowl…then we’ll see but of course…it’ll always be something. Some reason other than that BSU is a great team.

    I don’t appreciate being called a liar by a 12-year-old jackass who keeps leveling grade-school personal attacks at me because he isn’t man enough to accept reality. If Boise State had to run the table in a playoff and play ranked teams week after week, YES, you insufferable moron, I would feel they’d earned their trophy–AS I’VE BEEN POSTING FOR MORE THAN A YEAR.

    But as the system is now

    Alabama has FIVE ranked teams on its schedule this season in additional to its traditional bone-crushing rivalries. LSU has SIX. And even if the Tide or Tigers go undefeated through that schedule, they STILL have to win the SEC Championship or they CANNOT go to the National Championship game no matter where the BCS ranks them.

    Now let’s look at Boise’s schedule, shall we?

    ONE ranked team on opening night and no conference championship hurdle to jump. It’s all a cushy downhill slide from day one.

    Boise just goes bouncing on cupcakes to the National Championship, with NO wear and tear on their bodies from playing comparable opponents??? No worrying week to week if the team will stay alive as one ranked opponent after another pops up on the schedule??? No head-to-head with a team like LSU/Bama that you know will knock one of you out of contention even if you win every other game??? No conference championship to spoil the dream after you’ve gone undefeated through a 12-game season of ranked opponents??? Are you kidding???

    Talk about homers. And you’re not even a mildly intelligent one. You are a blithering IDIOT.

    Blither at someone else, you fool.

    Wow! The passions the Broncos bring to the board.
    boisestatewhodat…let up man it’s just a comment board for crying out loud. Nothing we say here means anything to the powers that be. And Deb…please don”t get bent out of shape, you’re better than that.

    It is entertaining though.

    How about this…let’s all pick on the buckeyes!

  35. frank booth says: Oct 11, 2011 4:38 PM

    Deb- boisestatewhodat doesn’t respond to logic. He’s going blue in the face (like BSU’s field) trying to get people to believe that Boise deserves to be recognized even though they play one a weaker schedule on a year-to-year basis. Quite frankly, it’s driving him crazy.

    The fact is that they are over-recognized, and should be verrrry happy being ranked 5th or 6th. Look, they haven’t even beaten a team that is presently ranked in the Top 25. They probably won’t play another Top 25 team this year. They’ll keep whining until someone hands them the championship.

    They are like someone who doesn’t want to put forth the effort but wants to get paid like all of the harder workers and somehow always feels snubbed.

    Yes, dear, it is difficult to find a comeback for the unvarnished truth. All you can do is give it thumbs down and come back with the usual digs about time on my hands, misery, and … wanking?? Well, that’s new. Um, whodat, maybe you don’t know what it means, but girls don’t have the equipment to be wankers. Speak for yourself :lol:

  37. Deb says: Oct 11, 2011 5:08 PM

    @frank booth …

    None of the Boise fans respond to logic. They breeze through their season with none of the nail-biting excitement or concern that fans of real contenders have faced for decades but demand to be accorded the same respect. When someone finally points out the cold, hard difference in what an SEC team experiences in a season and what Boise State experiences, they just thumbs down and run off in a huff. But it is what it is.

    @TxGrown …

    Sugar, this is a football blog. It’s no fun if I can’t get my Southern up once in a while ;)

    Seriously, has anyone given in to the thought that the BCS all by itself has created this conference (musical chairs) scenario.
    Weak conferences, i.e WAC, Mtn West, Big EAST,Conference USA, MAC,etc. The best teams are bolting, despite the cost, In hopes that better things will come.
    Weaker teams, in the so called power conferences are scrambling because of teams like Boise State, and TCU are gonna come in and kick their tails. Teams like Texas A & M, Missouri, Colorado, Arkansas, Miss ST, Vanderbuilt(never), cant ger a fair shake in thier conference because they cant win year in and year out. Having one winning year followed by mediocrity is killing those teams.
    It may never give teams like Utah(PAC 12, BYU(independant now), or BSU, TCU, all four of these teams have dominated thier respective weak leagues over the past ten years or more.
    These teams want to show themselves and the world that they are legitimate.
    Now it looks like in the next five years. The super conferences will do no more than make the obscure teams more obscure, and the Power teams will keep all the cash.
    So with all the change. Nothing will really change. Kinda like the Obama joke we are all living through now.
