Michigan State still reviewing personal fouls from Gholston

Four days after Michigan State’s 28-14 win over Michigan, the school is still conducting an internal investigation into the two personal foul penalties committed by defensive end William Gholston.

Gholston was flagged for punching Michigan offensive lineman Taylor Lewan and twisting the helmet of quarterback Denard Robinson. The Big Ten defines unsportsmanlike conduct as “striking or attempting to strike or otherwise physically abusing an official, opposing coach, spectator or athlete.”

You can watch this video and decide for yourself, but it’s pretty clear that Gholston’s actions are unacceptable in every imaginable way.

“We are in the process of completing our internal review of the matter,” Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said in a statement. “We are thoroughly reviewing the entire game and utilizing all of the available resources: coaches’ video from midfield and end zone cameras, TV copy as well as still photographs. Once the internal review is completed, we will forward a written report on to the Big Ten. The conference office won’t discuss a timeline for this process and neither will we.”

Under Big Ten guidelines, and in correlation to the date of the incidents (Saturday), Michigan State will have until Wednesday to finish its report, at which point it will send it to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany for review. Delany will have three more days to respond to the report if he does not agree with the assessment.
