Maryland LB to be sidelined for the year after surgery

The last time we checked in on Maryland linebacker Kenny Tate, the senior was listed as doubtful for an early October game against Georgia Tech with an unspecified injury. It’s believed the injury is knee-related, although the school never officially endorsed that rumor. Whatever it is, it’s going to sideline him for the rest of the year.

Tate is scheduled to have surgery this week, according to a school press release, and will apply for a medical redshirt to return in 2012; he has not used a redshirt yet during his time in College Park.

“I recently had a chance to sit down with Coach Edsall, my family and the medical staff to discuss my options,” Tate said. “This is the best course of action to get healthy and get back on the field next season.”

“It’s certainly a blow to our team to lose a player and leader of Kenny’s caliber, but we want to do what’s in his best interest,” Edsall said. “Our medical staff determined that surgery was the best way to proceed so that’s what we’re going to do.”

In four games this season, Tate netted 35 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble. He was a 2010 first-team All-ACC selection.
