Watching Boston College get thoroughly whipped by Florida State 38-7 tonight was painful, and at times, borderline excruciating. The Eagles barely mustered 200 yards of offense and weren’t able to convert a third down on their first six offensive possessions of the game. Their final offensive drive of the first half — nine plays and 74 yards sparked by freshman quarterback Josh Bordner — ended in a fumble recovered by the Seminoles.
BC’s only points of the night came early in the third quarter following a fumble by FSU quarterback EJ Manuel.
There have been a lot of problems for the 2-7 Eagles this season, who are obviously now out of bowl contention. Injuries and youth have plagued BC on both sides of the ball in Frank Spaziani‘s third year as head coach, but one former player thinks that it’s time for a change.
In the middle of tonight’s game, former BC and current Saints lineman Matt Tennant tweeted “Spaz is defeated. Going to a low-tier bowl is not acceptable. And this year they get nothing. Things need to change.”
Tennant played one year under Spaziani, his senior year in 2009.
Spaziani is 18-17 after nine games into his third full year (17-17 if you don’t count a Meineke Car Care Bowl win as an interim coach in 2006) and has bowl appearances in the Emerald Bowl and the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. Both were losses.
On paper, that resume doesn’t need much explaining.
But, Spaziani has been extremely loyal to Boston College as a defensive coordinator and now as a head coach, and sometimes, coaches have bad years where nothing goes their way. One former player tweeting his frustrations won’t be nearly enough to get Spaziani fired, but the mounting pressure to win in a — let’s be honest — very, very winnable league can be.
