Illinois linebacker shot in hand at party after Michigan game

Dan Persa Trulon Henry AP

There’s some scary news from Champaign today as Illinois linebacker Trulon Henry was shot in the hand during a party early Sunday morning, according to the Champaign Gazette-Times.

Henry was reportedly called to the party by a teammate to encourage other teammates to leave. While there, shots were fired and Henry was one of three people injured.

The way it’s being reported, it sounds like Henry was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The Detroit News adds that a fight had broken out prior to shots being fired. Whether or not Henry was part of that incident is unclear. He had surgery today and will miss the rest of the regular season.

Henry ranked ninth on the team with 39 tackles and was tied for first on defense with two interceptions.

Can’t we get through a season without a player involved in a gun incident even an accidental one? I hope he gets better and goes on to live a normal life, but Zook needs to have a speech with his guys about who you associate with in your free time.

Wouldn’t a bullet go through a hand? Wouldn’t this be career ending?

Not sure yet the extent of the wound. Just know he had surgery on it today.

Depending on the location of the wound, and the extent of nerve damage (if any) involved, he could have no long term effects at all, or limited use of the hand. Hard to tell without more info. I have seen people get shot/stabbed in the hand and have nothing more than a bad scar to show for it. And, as a linebacker, he would not need perfect motor control in his hand to be effective. So, while I highly doubt it would be career ending, it is impossible to say without more info

Sad to hear that he was trying to be a good teammate and it got him injured. Hopefully he will be fine and this will not effect him in the long term

I hate it when I go out to a party and someone shoots me in the hand.
