Case McCoy named starter against Baylor

You can officially take out the “or” between Texas quarterbacks Case McCoy and David Ash for this Saturday against Baylor. The two have been listed as co-starters for much of the season, but McCoy will be given the opportunity to play the whole game against the Bears, Texas’ latest depth chart shows.

Whether or not McCoy will actually finish the game as the starter remains to be seen. Quarterback play has been an issue for the Longhorns all season long, starting with Connor Wood transferring to Colorado just before the start of the season, and then the benching (and subsequent transferring) of incumbent starter Garrett Gilbert.

The attrition at QB led to Ash and McCoy splitting snaps in games as offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin tried to get the most production out of his newly-installed offense. For a while, it looked like Ash had become the go-to guy for the Longhorns, but Ash hasn’t thrown a touchdown since the Red River game against Oklahoma early last month. Since then, he’s thrown six interceptions.

McCoy was 16-of-27 for 110 yards in last Thursday’s win over Texas A&M; Ash didn’t attempt a pass.

Given the way the two young QB’s have played this season, it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if the two continued to split time -- despite the updated two-deep -- through Saturday and the bowl season. What’s more certain is that there will definitely be an open competition for the quarterback job come spring practice.
