D.J. Adams decides to leave the Terps

A tough first season for Randy Edsall‘s Maryland team continues to take blow after blow.

Today, running back D.J. Adams announced he would be transferring from the program to pursue other playing opportunities.

“I am sincerely thankful for both the academic and athletic opportunities afford to me as a University of Maryland football player,” Adams said in a statement. “The 2011 Maryland football season proved to be extremely challenging and disappointing for me and my fellow teammates. After prayerful consideration, I believe it is best for me to continue my education and collegiate football career elsewhere.

“I take with me cherished memories of Terrapin football, lifelong friendships and valuable life lessons. I wish Coach Edsall, the coaching staff and the Maryland football program as a whole much success today and always.”

Adams was suspended for Maryland’s season-opening game against Miami because of a violation of team rules. Beyond that, the redshirt sophomore had just 40 carries for 174 yards and four touchdowns this season after leading the team with 11 touchdowns last season.
