Paul Chryst still looking for right coaching opportunity

Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst has been one of the hottest names in the head coaching rumor mill over the past year or so. Chryst, who has seen his team average at least 40 points per game each of the last two seasons, has been connected to head coaching gigs at Illinois and, now, Kansas, writes the Wisconsin State Journal.

A source close to Chryst told the State Journal that Chryst spoke with Kansas about the head coaching job that became open when the school fired Turner Gill after two seasons.

Whether or not Chryst is interested, however, remains to be seen. Wisconsins athletic director Barry Alvarez told the WSJ that Chryst is ready to leave and become a head coach. But it doesn’t appear Chryst will go just anywhere; the Wisconsin native wants to stay in either the midwest, or head to the NFL.

Illinois looks like they’re very interested in either Chryst or Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi. Both were reported to have interviewed with Illinois while in Indianapolis for the Big Ten championship game.

While it’s unclear whether Kansas feels the same way, former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer expressed his interest in returning to the sidelines, possibly with the Jayhawks if they would have him.
