Updated: RichRod adds another assistant to his staff

Arizona Wildcats

New Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez is slowly but surely putting his staff together, and all the new hires have worked with the coach at some point during his career.

Following the hiring of three assistants from Pitt, including offensive coordinator Calvin Magee, Rodriguez has picked up another former assistant in Indiana with co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Rod Smith.

Smith played under Rodriguez at Glenville State and coached under him at Clemson, West Virginia and Michigan

“We appreciate Rod’s efforts with us this season,” IU coach Kevin Wilson said. “We’re sorry to see him leave and wish him and his family the very best. Rod has a long-standing relationship with Coach Rodriguez and we understand his decision.

“As we move forward, we’ll take our time to find the fit for our coaching staff that will keep our program headed in a positive direction.”

Working underneath Rodriguez and Smith is current UA offensive line coach, Robert Anae, who has been retained by Rodriguez.

You would think RROD would have learned from his last go round. He had an entire year to speak to some D-coordinators and line up a wink/nod with one of them to save himself from a beating like he took at UM. Instead, he’s out doing exactly what he did when came to Michigan by leaving the defense swinging in the wind. This guy had the seeds to state that he would have won at least 10 games at UM this year. Is he serious? With Gregg Robinson handing out teddy bears on the sideline? Let’s get real. No decent D-coordinator in the country would have went to UM under RROD during the offseason, and UMs defense would have been just as atrocious as it always was under him. With no running game other than Denard, UM would have had no offense against the Nebraskas and OSUs. And they would have finished with 8 wins tops, no BCS, got blown out in a mediocre bowl game, and had no sign of progress on D for the future. The only reason that RROD was ever successful is because his system works in pansy conferences like the Big Easy because opposing teams’ offenses can’t score enough points and their defenses are the size of what he put together at UM. The only thing he has going for him at Arizona is the fact that they have no tradition, no football knowledge, and no expectations. He can become a hero winning 7 games a year there. With people like him walking the earth, it’s no wonder great countries fall apart. His head needs to be checked in an MRI so they can identify the region of the brain that doesn’t light up when someone says the word defense. He’s operating with half a deck.
