BYU, Wazzu finalize home-and-home series

With the finishing touches yet to be put on their 2011 season, BYU and Washington State announced plans Friday to open next season versus one another.

According to dual press releases, the Cougars and, um, the Cougars will open the 2012 season Sept. 1 in Provo. The following season, BYU will travel to Pullman to face Wazzu. The date on the 2013 game has yet to be determined.

“It has been my desire since arriving at Washington State to schedule quality nonconference opponents in a home-and-home series,” said WSU athletic director Bill Moos. “This falls in line with future schedules which include series with Wisconsin and Boise State.”

“We’re excited to finalize this series with Washington State,” said BYU AD Tom Holmoe. “It fits well with our philosophy of scheduling regional games with quality opponents. It also gives our fans in the Northwest another opportunity to see our football team play live.”

BYU had been scheduled to open next season against Georgia Tech. The Provo-based Cougars hold a 2-1 lead in the all-time “series”.

Interestingly, next season will mark the debut of Mike Leach, who was hired by Wazzu earlier this month as its head coach and is a 1983 graduate of BYU.
