Oregon State DC linked to Hawaii coaching job

More coaching carousel news for y’all (consider it our little stocking stuffers for ya).

Over the weekend, the Honolulu Star Advertiser reported that Hawaii was considering three candidates to replace former coach Greg McMackin, who, ahem, “retired” after going 6-7 in his fourth season succeeding June Jones.

Those candidates were: Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker, City College of San Francisco head coach George Rush and UH director of personnel George Lumpkin.

To the casual observer, Banker seems like the most obvious choice. Banker, a long, longtime assistant of Oregon State coach Mike Riley, was an assistant coach with the Warriors in 1995 and has recruiting ties to Hawaii and Los Angeles.

Banker told KHON2 Sports in Hawaii “it would be an honor to represent the state of Hawaii and the University of Hawaii as its next head football coach.”

As the Oregonian pointed out a couple years ago, Riley would be more than just on board with Banker leaving to fulfill his desire to be a head coach.

The Advertiser said Hawaii’s six-member search advisory committee will meet today, and interviews could begin as soon as Tuesday.
