Medical hardship waivers granted to Tate, three other Terps

For a team ravaged by transfer attrition of late, Maryland could use any and all good news on the personnel front they can get their hands on.

Fortunately for Randy Edsall and his Terps, good news landed in College Park Friday.

In a release, the school announced that wide receiver Tyrek Cheeseboro, defensive back Matt Robinson, defensive lineman Isaiah Ross and linebacker Kenny Tate have been approved for medical hardship waivers, giving each player another season of eligibility.

“It was great news to hear that each of them gained another year,” Edsall said. “We’re looking forward to having all four of these young men healthy for 2012.”

Arguably the biggest boost came from Tate landing a waiver. As he was a senior, Tate might’ve been facing the end of his collegiate career when he suffered a season-ending injury a third of the way into the season. However, because he played in only four of the Terps’ games -- 30 percent of 12 is 3.6, and the NCAA rounds that number up to four -- and none came in the second half of the season, Tate qualified for the waiver.

Tate was the Terps’ leading tackler before he went down with what’s believed to be a knee injury in late September, and was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2010.

Robinson and Ross were both starters before suffering their season-ending injuries, the former in the third game and the latter in the season opener.
