Either way, Arizona State probably didn’t think they would be in Las Vegas for their bowl game this year. The Sun Devils had lofty preseason expectations, but ended up a disappointing 6-6 and fired their coach, Dennis Erickson, who will coach the team through the bowl.
However, ASU will be without defensive end Junior Onyeali when they take on Boise State. Onyeali did not travel with the team to Vegas and the Arizona Republic reports that Onyeali and Erickson had a heated exchange at Monday’s practice.
Onyeali, the Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2010, sustained a knee injury in a September loss to Illinois and never quite got back on track. He had 11 tackles, including 3.5 for loss and a sack on the season.
Sophomore Davon Coleman likely will start in Onyeali’s place.
