I wonder how long the Bowl ban is for?

Does anyone else think it a bit unfair that the school has to pay for the transgression of someone who isn’t there anymore, when they got rid of him when they found out?

I bet it didn’t bother you OSU fans when any other school got nailed. Now that it’s YOU, oh no! Then again, OSU fans are the same ones who defended Tressel by comparing him to a father trying to “take care of his children.”

Really? I did not even know that Ohio played Michigan, maybe you schedule some MAC teams earlier in the year but did not know that you played them that many times.

@jt – but that’s exactly the point many are missing.
The punishment is designed to affect recruiting, and perhaps even transfers for kids who want to showcase and enjoy bowl play before their college days are up.
About AD Smith……..I TOTALLY agree. I still don’t get HOW he’s still around. That’s a complete travesty.

4770 = the number of days it would take Ohio to catch Michigan and tie the series…IF Ohio won each and every year.
3285 = the longest streak of consecutive wins in the rivalry… 9 years straight by Michigan. You ‘missed it by… that much’.

I realize there has to be regulation, rules etc but it seems to me they have too much power. No one can challenge them and they answer to no one.

Who are they? How do they get these jobs? Why would the Universaties want to create or be a part of this Dictatorship? Why can’t each Conference police themselves?

I agree with most… kids that had nothing to do with these infractions get punished. It’s just plain wrong and the idiot AD doesn’t even fight for the kids or the Coaches. He just accepts it and kisses up to the NCAA so that they don’t make him quit.

What would happen if the NCAA said ” no football for 30 years” There’s nothing anyone could do, could they? Power corrupts and the NCAA has too much power.

You can certainly argue that the sanctions levied against USC were too harsh but to attempt to grade them based on what OSU got is flawed logic at best

While there may have been parallel violations in the MBB program (again involving a single player) the USC MBB program got a comparative slap on the wrist compared to the sanctions imposed on the Football program. This is not to say that the NCAA sanctions on USC were incorrect, the point is tOSU sanctions were inconsistent to what the NCAA imposed on USC. tOSU had multiple years and multiple players involved along with the head coach of the program who had multiple opportunities to report what was occurring but elected not to do so. Standing by to see what the NCAA does with UMiami.

That’s just pitiful. This whole thing is so messed up.

While another conference team may get an invite its lame when the other conference team isn’t deserving. In yet another example of the NCAA’s lack of consistency in applying rules the NCAA approved UCLA’s request for a bowl bid. With a losing record of 6-7, UCLA was ineligible to play in a bowl game. Under NCAA rules, teams with losing records are ineligible for bowl berths unless a waiver is granted.

It will be interesting to see the bowl game attendance and revenue derived for 2 teams that fired their respective coaches mid season because they were not competitive.

That’s a pretty good compromise suggestion if the NCAA is dead set on hitting the institution. The problem is that the conference won’t let it happen. If USC or OSU is barred from a bowl, that means another school in the conference can play. So the $$$$ will still go to the conference–revenues are divided in those conferences. If you donate the money to charity, the conference loses. They’ll never stand for it. And when I say “they,” I’m including our SEC as well.

Tressel had more than 4 chances to report the… reports about the players. He had a chance every freaking day! I have no problem with his 5 year ban.

Just like with USC, they are punishing kids, coaches, alum, etc. who had nothing to do with the infractions.

I bet if Pryor had offered to give the NCAA a cut of his deal, they would have been okay with it! That’s all they’re trying to protect – their big, fat bank account.

The tattoos and smaller benefits are bad and deserved punishment but giving a guy 3-4 hundred bucks as opposed to a house is not the same.
The sanctions are fair I actually expected more scholarship losses…With Urb and Miller being a Jr. they will make a serious run at a title in 2013

No one will get the death penalty again…SMU had the president and state governor directly involved an literally had an 7 figure payroll. However, Miami will set a new standard for whatever the worst sanctions you can get without being killed. Perhaps the life support penalty is a good name.

So you’re saying that USC got penalized excessively because the AD at the time, Mike Garrett stonewalled the NCAA investigation and additionally was uncooperative and arrogant.

So basically Jim Tressel lying and covering up what happened for over a year while the AD and Gee, the OSU president stood behind him warrants a significantly smaller penalty.

Meanwhile Garrett is gone from USC. His replacement Pat Hayden asked the NCAA to reconsider the sanctions but the NCAA apparently felt the original penalties as justified so they kept the 2 year ban and loss of 30 scholarship penalty intact.

USC got lucky when Pete Carroll left for the NFL, athletic director Mike Garrett resigned and president Steve Sample retired, relieving the university from the a decision of firing an immensely popular coach, a former Heisman Trophy winning athletic director and the most popular president in school history — and the Trojans still were slapped with significant sanctions that far exceed tOSU. That case was about an assistant coach whom the NCAA says knew or should’ve known about an ineligible player.

Smith and Gee remain and tOSU only lost 9 scholarships.

Again NCAA = Not Consistent At All

Play the bowl game, the money goes to a nationally-recognized charity (Jimmy V. Fund for cancer research?).

End result: costs the university money (actually a lot of it), allows the players to enjoy the bowl game experience.

End of problem…

@mike – the only problem with OSU banning itself from a bowl appearance this year would have been the NCAA’s need to add on to that and ban us next year as well. I liked the gamble and I think it pays out because the team gets to practice throughout while Urban gets to recruit the entire time.

I feel the same way about keeping USC out of the bowls. It’s not fair to the current players. Yes, people call these “institutional” punishments. But let’s be real. The infractions were made by people who are no longer with these programs–and in USC’s case, those people got off scot-free. So in reality, the NCAA is punishing people who didn’t commit any infractions. Calling them institutional punishments is just a nice way of saying you’re making Phillip pay for the window Peter broke.

If the infractions are serious enough–meaning pay for play or betting on games, fire the coaches and administrators involved and suspend the students involved. Then bar them from leaping to other programs–including the pros–for one year. If the NFL wants to stay in good with their farm system, they’ll cooperate. But this long-term “show-cause” stuff is ridiculous. You can’t bar a man from the long-term pursuit of his profession by threatening potential employers. That’s so … Don Corleone. And at the end of the day, this is still about failing to report kids selling memorabilia and getting free tattoos
