With the college football world still somewhat “intrigued” over his hiring by Kansas earlier this month, Charlie Weis underwent a planned surgical procedure Monday, the school announced on its official Twitter feed.
According to the tweet, the new Jayhawks head coach had successful hip replacement surgery in Florida yesterday. Weis will remain in Florida where he still maintains a residence through the Christmas holiday, and will then return to Lawrence at some point next week.
The timing of Weis’ surgery was likely made to coincide with the NCAA’s recruiting calendar. Monday was the official start to the recruiting dead period, a time in which coaches are not permitted to make in-home visits or play host to official or unofficial on-campus visits. The dead period also limits coaches to one placing one phone call per recruit per week.
Weis spent last season as Florida’s offensive coordinator before being hired as Turner Gill‘s replacement Dec. 8.
