APThe job of Oregon’s offensive line is to protect the Ducks’ playmakers — guys like Darron Thomas and LaMichael James.
Mark Asper (pictured, left) took it a step further than that.
At the traditional Lawry’s Beef Bowl Wednesday night — a Rose Bowl tradition in which the opposing teams compete in an eating contest at Lawry’s the Prime Rib in Beverly Hills — Asper was enjoying his dinner with his teammates (it was Oregon’s night at Lawry’s).
Then, according to Adam Jude of the Eugene Register-Guard, who was at the restaurant, a man at the restaurant began choking on his food. After an unsuccessful attempt by the man’s son to perform the Heimlich Maneuver, Asper went over to assist. Channeling his inner Eagle Scout, Asper was able to save the man, Paul Diamond, whose son goes to UO.
“I was afraid I was going to break his ribs,” Asper said.
You can view a video of Asper’s interview of the incident HERE.
Why did I know this was at Lowry’s before opening the story!! Well done young Mr. Asper!
Good man!!! That’s awesome stuff!
It’s nice to have some really good news come out of a football team, isn’t it?
But yes, it’s amazing Asper didn’t crush the poor guy!
Strong and gentle, I guess.
This is great news! It is wonderful to learn of this and all kudos to Asper for saving Diamond’s life (and not breaking his ribs…ha). What a good story! Keep up the great work, Ducks, on and off the field!
Nice Asper Maneuver!
Bet that dude is now a BIG Duck fan. Nice job young man.
Eagle Scout. Self-effacing. Probably already graduated and is working on his masters.
A good kid who knew what needed to be done and did it.
Now sue him for brushing your ribs.. This is America!
