Updated: Vontaze Burfict heading to NFL

(I will never, ever get tired of this photo of Vontaze Burfict; the caption possibilities are endless)

While I can always hold the memory of the Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict near and dear with that photo, it looks like the junior will soon be a memory to the Sun Devils as well.

Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic reports that Burfict is expected to forego his senior year and declare for the NFL Draft. Burfict said on his Facebook page Monday he plans on “expanding (his) talents to the next level.”

Burfict later confirmed the move in a statement:

“After thoughtful and in-depth discussions with my family, I have decided to skip my final year of eligibility at Arizona State University and make myself eligible for the 2012 NFL Draft.  I would like to thank every one of my coaches and professors at ASU.  I plan to return to ASU and get my degree and I will always support the university and its football program.  I cherish the memories and great times I had as a student-athlete at ASU and I hope to make the university proud of my future accomplishments on and off the field.”

Burfict, despite being a preseason All-American, was considered to have an “average” year by former coach Dennis Erickson and was reportedly part of a verbal altercation with Erickson in the practices leading up to the Las Vegas Bowl. Erickson later shot down rumors that Burfict was in any kind of trouble with the team.

Burfict had 69 total tackles, a fumble recovery and interception this year.

Anybody with Dennis Erickson as their coach will have an “average” season.
Burfict is an intense player who absolutely loves football. Whichever team drafts him will be getting a solid player, especially if they can steal him in the late 2nd round

There’s a bit of Ray Lewis about him…the kind of guy you could see dominating the league for a decade, or bearing witness (at least) to a double homicide.

    Possibly on the field.

He seems good but all I saw him do the last 2 games was get mutliple personal fouls after plays. It was very weird to be honest. He seemed angry and out of control. I am sure he will do well in the pros but he went out of college on a terrible note. He looked like an angry T.O. on defense. Against Cal he got 3 personal fouls on consecutive plays. I have never seen that in my 35 plus years of watching football. I hope he can get that under control. I think he will because he’s not playing a deva position. I wish him the best, perhaps Erickson was THAT bad.

Isn’t 1st round worthy…misses a ton of tackles, constantly over pursues and is a chronic head case.

Unless Kuechly falls, THIS is the guy the Giants need to target. Hopefully the “character concerns” are overblown.

His character issues are blown out of proportion by the media and by people who dont even watch his play. The pac 12 officials tend to show a lot of favoritism, and he is definitley at the bottom of their list. He’s a great player. He didnt have many personal fouls until the end of the season when the devils fell apart. The main thing that he will have to fix is his late dog piling, which was pretty entertaining to watch. His production numbers are the fault of erickson and bray, because they changed his role. I couldnt care less that he’s leaving since we will be getting Brandon Magee back next year, who in my opinion is a class act and excellent at wrapping up. If the cards didnt need an o-line so bad i would like him in the first round.

The dude is intense and talented but he isn’t disciplined enough to play his role in a team defense. He has a lousy sense of “timing” and gets his personal foul penalties for obvious late hits. The Cal game antics were sad to watch.

In the NFL, make him a pass rusher and he will be a star but with 6 penalties and resulting first downs that keep drives alive to lose the game. He will get so many late hit and leading with the helmet hits, the penalties will pile up. He will be a headache for who ever takes him. A defensive T.O.
