Poll: Will Tide roll again in ’12?

BCS Championship Football AP

In a two-game series that featured 10 field goals and offensive ineptness as far as the eye could see — looking at you, LSU, offensively exposed with zero big plays defensively and on special teams — how appropriately ironic was it that the final score was a clean, three-touchdown-looking 21-0?

Regardless of what it looked like or how it got there, three clicks on the scoreboard at a time or not, the Alabama Crimson Tide is the BcS champion for the 2011 season on the strength of the best college defense I have witnessed in my lifetime.  It’s also their second BcS trophy in the past three years, part of a six-year crystal football run for the SEC.

The scary part for the SEC specifically and college football in general?  This run for the Tide is far from over as Alabama will return in the neighborhood of 13-15 of their 24 starters in 2012, pending underclassmen NFL decisions.

So, with the only part of the 2011 season already in the advanced stages of rigor mortis being the LSU offense, we ask the question: can the Tide go back-to-back in January of 2013?  Yeah, we know; it’s early.  Still, just play along.  Humor me.

Vote below.  And, Bayou Bengal fans, feel free to vent away.  For all the (deserved) shots that have been and will be taken at your offense, it was a helluva run for a very, very good football team.

Anyway, vote and spew, and not necessarily in that order…

To many, they didn’t win it this year.

You don’t go .500 against someone, not win your division, and be called the best team in the country.

There are 6 “big conferences”. All with conference winners, most with 2 division winners too. Alabama was neither.

LSU, Alabama, and Oklahoma State all could argue their case.

  2. cowhawkfan says: Jan 10, 2012 12:02 AM

Best defense in your lifetime? Who did they play that had an offense to demonstrate this great D?

  3. cosanostra71 says: Jan 10, 2012 12:02 AM

no, because I think USC will win it ;) fight on!

  4. TxGrown says: Jan 10, 2012 12:04 AM

I miss college football already, can’t wait till next season. Congrats Tide.

  5. suprmous says: Jan 10, 2012 12:06 AM

Should the BcS give Bama #1 status I think I’m goin to be sick to my stomach. And why in the Sam Hill is it that those who voted for LSU to be #1 earlier are now sayin they can’t do it again with a clean conscience? It leads me to believe somewhere there’s some $$ involved.

  6. majorseahawk says: Jan 10, 2012 12:11 AM

What a pitiful title game, worst one in BCS history.

  7. trbowman says: Jan 10, 2012 12:14 AM

No, this is the year the Irish echoes wake up.

Ah, who the fu** am I kidding, it’ll be an SEC team again.

  8. trbowman says: Jan 10, 2012 12:15 AM

    Or USC.

USC is going to be scary good next year.

  9. moufpuncha says: Jan 10, 2012 12:17 AM

I honestly think LSU will do it next year because they will have an actual QB.

  10. udub says: Jan 10, 2012 12:20 AM

I think Oregon or USC could do it, but I think yet another SEC team will end up doing it.

I say another SEC team because yeah they’ve won 6 in a row, but no team has done it back to back, so I would bet on LSU winning it next year before Alabama does. Even Georgia with Aaron Murray back and the growth of another year could sneak in the mix and end up getting the title.

This Championship Sucks Both teams were terrible Play it out on the field Alabama won’t win a mythical champ in future unless they earn it

  12. supremeomega says: Jan 10, 2012 12:24 AM

Oregon won’t ever win a NC. They are too soft! Whenever they play a powerful team Auburn LSU Ohio St. They get manhandled on both lines…all the speed in the world doesn’t matter if you get blown up at scrimmage

    —————————————————–

You mean like how they were manhandled on both lines by powerful Wisconsin?

To say Oregon won’t ever win a NC is ludicrous. It was 22-19 last year, not 84-0, and headed for OT before that fluky Dyer run where everyone thought he was down. It was the closest game in the recent SEC 6 year run…and yet Oregon won’t ever win a NC.

    Whatever.

Do powerful teams have the advantage? Yes.

Do powerful teams win 10 times out of 10? No.

    Won’t ever…thats a pretty bold statement.

  14. woodruff2250 says: Jan 10, 2012 12:43 AM

This game being worst since Championships began Are LSU and Alabama the best choice for BCS Champs If yes the BCS must go The Fans deserve the best

  15. mrlitl says: Jan 10, 2012 12:45 AM

    @742 and cow hawk

Did u all actually watch the game? Bama dominated LSUs offense the whole game. The line and linebackers smothered the run. The DBs held receivers in check. LSU crossed the 50 one time! If that’s not a great D, then what is?? #idiots

  16. Deb says: Jan 10, 2012 12:51 AM

    @suprmous …

“Should the BCS give Alabama #1 status …” We won the BCS #1 status when we beat your team 21-0. They gave us the trophy. We are the BCS Champion. What … were you taking a bathroom break during that part?

The only question is whether the AP will vote Alabama their title. Let’s see … Alabama only allowed LSU across the 50 once. It’s the first time in BCS history that the loser has been held scoreless. You beat us by a FG in OT after we missed four field goals. We beat you 21 nothing–six offensive scores to your ZERO.

No, there’s no money involved. You’re just a delusional idiot who can’t face the fact that your team was clobbered tonight. When #2 clobbers #1 in the championship game, usually #2 becomes the champion. That’s pretty much how it works. See Florida and Ohio State.

  17. Deb says: Jan 10, 2012 12:54 AM

    @mrlitl …

People like 742 and cowhawk had determined their narrative–bitching about split titles, boring games, and undeserving opponents–before the game was played. The fact that we won 21-0 and held the opponent–the former #1 in the nation–scoreless for the first time in BCS history is irrelevant to them. They intended to whine and they’re going to whine.

Let them whine. That trophy’s going to look really nice in our case :D

  18. lanzurrah says: Jan 10, 2012 12:54 AM

USC vs LSU next year….both teams will be stacked. Barkley, Woods, Lee, Farmer, McNeal, Grimble and 4/5 starting o-linemen from last year will constitute the best offense LSU has played against since Tebow was running Florida’s spread-option.

Difference between USC and Oregon….USC actually has a pretty competent defense.

  19. mrlitl says: Jan 10, 2012 12:55 AM

  20. Deb says: Jan 10, 2012 12:56 AM

I love you. Really. Love, love, love :)

And success is the best revenge ;)

  21. drjimmylee says: Jan 10, 2012 1:09 AM

Alabama scored 21 points. Would you be happy if it were 21-20? Only problem was that Alabama’s defense was too good to make it a good game. Ignorant comments.

  22. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Jan 10, 2012 1:10 AM

Congratulation to all the Bama people for properly preparing, and playing a great defensive game. When I saw Jordan Jefferson on the first serious I knew we, us LSU fans, would be in for a long night. And considering how piss poor our offense was we still had a chance in the game up until five minutes left in the game. Our defense was on the field for to long and was finally worn down and gave up a meaningless touchdown at the end.
You can tell Bama prepared their asses off because it definitely showed. LSU bought into their own hypes and thought we were the Champs already because we’ve beaten them already on Nov 5 and took the game granted…. There was absolutely no life in the team tonight, as if though it didn’t really matter because they have won already, and I blamed all that on the coaching staff for not showing these guys how important tonight was. Sadly ten fifteen years from now LSU players are going to look back at tonight’s game and realized that they had a chance to be a part of something special, but instead they cheated themselves, they cheated the school, and also cheated the fans on a very special season. They will regret their decision to not commit 100% to this game because for some of these guys they will never have that chance again.
Once again Great game Alabama and congratulation on your win tonight. Your were definitely the hungrier of the two teams. We will see you next year so enjoy the moment and I’ll go to a budhist Temple and dedicate my life to suffering. This will be a tough lose for me because like I said earlier LSU seems like they just didn’t care about the game, that is why I am so disappointed with because I know we are a lot better than that.

  23. billmead1976 says: Jan 10, 2012 1:15 AM

The Alabama defense appeared Scary Goid because LSU had no offensive threat. Jefferson was horrible. This defense doesn’t pitch a shutout against Oklahoma State, Oregon, USC or even Biise State

Congrats to UA on the championship. Run Forest Run.

First congrats to Alabama on winning the game that counted. apparently not all count.

Second I have no issue or ill will against LSU or Bama. They are both great teams.

ESPN is getting out of control. They pushed the rematch. Pushing on National TV “These are the best two teams, no question about it”. NO, there is actually some debate about that. Having Saban on for two hours the final weekend. OSU sat the week before and I didn’t see Gundy on. They influenced the voting.

So now they acclaim Alabama’s defense. This game was two top defenses. They are not on the field at the same time! All Alabama really did is shutdown an average offense at best. best defense ever? So is Baylor the best offense of all time? Look at their bowl stats, who cares what defense they played.

if Alabama can throw over them, OSU could light them up. Even Georgia started to before they choked.

All I am saying is NOTHING is proven. EVERYTHING is debatable in the top 3.

OSU played Stanford’s game plan and came out on top. Our weakness is run defense, We beat the best run first offense in the country, and they have the NFL top prospect at QB.

LSU #2? that performance and they lose one spot? Sorry not drinking that cool-aid.

This year broke the BCS, but the culprit goes unscathed. ESPN. There is way too much opinion pushed as fact. ESPN is a News agency. if they reported on current events they would be more skewed than Fox News. But I suspect its even worse than that. There is blatant corruption, how did Craig James have a job this year? He can use his job position to lie and get a head coach fired, then get exposed, but everything is good with ESPN. Plus his history with SMU? seriously ESPN is disgusting.

I am not here to say OSU would beat them, or there should be a split title. Just that NOBODY can speak in absolutes. Everything is debatable

  28. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Jan 10, 2012 8:06 AM

Remember be gracious in victory, Deb rubbing the stats on us, LSU fan. I have been observing the last few weeks leading up to this game last night , and I have to say I am extremely disappointed in you “so call adults.”
Deb will be the first to give her congratulating .., and she has no problem that out, or pointing out the fact that she support us for whatever reason. Deb will no doubt praised LSU for their successful season. So Deb I am by no mean is picking a fight with you, after the Nov 5 game so many Bama fans claimed they did not lose that game but in actuality if the fieldgoals would’ve gone in they would have won and since LSU took the extra overtime period to win, Bama fans concluded that they were the better team so therefore they did not lose to LSU ,… I’ve watched the animosities of fans went so far that Big Papa (JT) stepping in to separate the kids.
I finally said, “Bring it, win or lose no excuses.”
Now that the game is over, I once again Congratulating all the Crimson Tided Fan families and university for an out standing victory !!!!’ LSU took you for granted and your took us the behind the shed. No excuses, unlike Nov 5, we lost to a better team on this day. Remember Deb and all fans …be gracious in victory and we too will be humble in out defeat.

This is a Sooner who was impressed with the Tide (though with 2 Gator kids, I can’t say I like ‘em much). A superlative defense and a good, not great offense. LSU as Number 2?!! Give me a break. When has a number 1 lost so badly to number 2 and stayed in the top 3?? The voters/writers were unnecessarily ennamored with LSU this year and are irrational in their admiration. They should be in the top 5 AT number 5 with OSU and Oregon with way more votes. The only number one ever to get shellacked so badly. Their Q-back is and always was a joke, which I have said all year. A putrid offense made Alabama look better than they were, but I will give you the fact that Alabama has a great defense and deserves #1 ranking. They did outplay LSU the first time, also. But put the Tigers down where they really rate

Maybe that explains why they’re so good…they’ve been playing with 12 guys the whole year! (Don’t think I’ve ever seen it stated in that manner. If the kicker and punter count as starters, why don’t the other guys who “start” on the kick and punt units?)

  31. twofbyc says: Jan 10, 2012 12:27 PM

Bama will restock with this year’s signings. They will be better offensively next year by a wide margin, and they won’t really miss much on D, unless a jr or two who shouldn’t turn pro, does. They have as good a shot next year as they had this year.

  32. Deb says: Jan 10, 2012 1:23 PM

    @thecrazyasianinseccountry …

Thank you for remembering that I was gracious after the Nov. 5 defeat, and that I defended the Tigers all season. All the Alabama fans posting here after the game were gracious, but I understand some on talk radio were not. However, we on CFT aren’t responsible for that. Yes, I have posted congrats on LSU’s season to the couple of LSU fans who’ve been kind to me throughout the last few weeks. I’m afraid I’ve been less gracious to others, like suprmous, who ganged up in groups and did everything possible to drive me off the blog. At least she actually showed up, even if it was to suggest Alabama bought its victory. The most hateful of those commenters are nowhere to be seen. It’s easy to beat up on others when you’re winning and have numbers in your favor. It’s a little different when the tables have turned.

You’ve been one of the great LSU fans on the boards this year, so let me offer my congrats on your team. They’ve made a terrific run, and I know last night was a disappointment. But your team is young and will be contending again next year, so we’ll soon be back at it :) You’re bringing back some fine players like Tyrann Mathieu. I’m not sure if Eric Reid is coming back, but he scares me to death. He made the play of the year in our first game and your best defensive play last night. Talented kid who’s often ignored because he’s in such great company.

Thank you for your generous–and funny–posts of congratulations last night. You’re the best. Good luck next season!!

  33. suprmous says: Jan 10, 2012 6:43 PM

Well it’s nice to know that one who doesn’t judge others is sittin up in her throne callin another an idiot. What else can Madam Diva want: kudos, her feet kissed along with her bare ass in public, be told she’s God’s gift to humanity, did I leave anything out Your Majesty?

  34. Deb says: Jan 10, 2012 7:36 PM

    suprmous …

You were being an idiot to suggest that Alabama was paying for the votes. We beat your team 21-0 and EARNED the title. How bad a sport can you be?

Now you’re just being rude and vulgar as usual. And as usual, you can’t even address me directly. You’re a pitiful woman, and I want nothing to do with you. I was always nice to you until the day you attacked me for no reason because of an argument I was having with someone else. You’ve bald-face lied about that, but that post is still up and and proves the truth of what I’m saying. My argument with her was over and you came storming in demanding to know what was wrong with me as though she hadn’t even been party to the argumen. You and another crowd with their own agenda ganged up to bully me all season–even after I posted nice things to you and asked you to let it go. Throughout all of it, I’ve continued to post respect to your team because that’s what real SEC fans do.

I came on within five minutes of the Nov. 5 game and congratulated LSU. You haven’t once congratulated Alabama. Neither have they. You’re all the sorriest bunch of gutless wonders I’ve encountered, and another LSU fan told me here today the real LSU fans see you for what you are. I’ve known that all along.

Now you can go crawl back under your rock for all I care, but stay away from me.

  35. suprmous says: Jan 10, 2012 10:38 PM

First of all I wasn’t referring to Bama payin for votes. I was merely mentionin of how some who said they voted for LSU before couldn’t with a clean conscience vote for them again. If you’d heard the press release you’d have pretty much the same thought as a few more of us did. I’m not the only one to have said what I did. As for me jumpin in against what you’d said to ladyhuckleberry, you damned right I did and I’d do it to anybody else who screamed and yelled things at her like you did. That l’il old lady has no business bein screamed at like that by you or anybody else for that matter. I don’t live under rocks. But from the way you talk you live in a glass house where the glass never gets knicked, God forbid. As for as bein nice to me you never have that I’ve ever seen. When it comes to intestinal fortitude I’ve got plenty. And I repeat it wasn’t you or Bama that was directly involved in my post so go sit on a tack and let your ego deflate some.

  36. Deb says: Jan 10, 2012 11:37 PM

    suprmous …

How was I supposed to know that’s a little old lady? I’d always been nice to her, but she kept posting goofy things and I finally said maybe a football blog isn’t the place for her. And if she’s a little old lady, it probably isn’t the place for her. She came at me tooth and nail, so I fired back. If I’d known she was a little old lady, I wouldn’t have said anything to her. It’s not like I can see her through the screen, you know. Come on.

And you didn’t tell me she was a little old lady. You just jumped all over me, so I fought back. It’s got nothing to do with ego. You were expecting me to know something I couldn’t possibly have known. This is the first time you’ve told me she was a little old lady. All I knew was that everyone was jumping all over me and I had to defend myself.

Anyway, I tried to make peace with you because ours was really a minor squabble. Unfortunately, the real pot-stirrers–tigersgeaux, etc.–have issues that have nothing to do with LSU or football. Most of the time when you thought I was talking to you, I wasn’t.

  37. suprmous says: Jan 11, 2012 3:20 AM

If she’s a l’il ole lady, she’s not but 65. Whether you can see thru a screen or not it doesn’t hurt to be nice to any and all on here just for that very reason: you don’t know how old they are, unless you know em personally. When you mention defendin yourself look close at those words, for that’s what she was doin but it was for defendin me. I repeat she felt like you’d run me off from here and she’d had enuff of the treatment you’d given me and others. She’s seen how you are: the eyes rollin icon, your smirkiness, and beratin others, etal and that’s why shes upset and not able to understand how you can get away with it the way you do.

  38. Deb says: Jan 11, 2012 11:43 AM

Well, I tried, but you’re just plain crackers.

Yeah, I have horns and you’re a lil angel. Bless your heart.

    Your rock is calling.
