Getty ImagesIt was a performance for the ages, and LSU’s microscopic offensive numbers bore out Alabama’s defensive dominance in the BcS title game.
Zero points. A miserly 1.4 yards per carry, and just 3.1 yards per pass attempt. Converted just two first downs in 12 third-down attempts. Four plays ran in Alabama territory, none until the fourth quarter and all coming on one drive. Five first downs. 92 yards of total offense. In every fashion imaginable, it was the Tide sawing on a Stradivarius while the Tigers plucked aimlessly on a stringless banjo.
Those numbers weren’t enough, though, to dissuade one coach from playing the what-if game.
Speaking to USA Today shortly after the Tide’s 21-0 thumping of the Tigers, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy lamented the fact that his Cowboys, which finished third in both the major polls, didn’t get the opportunity to do what LSU couldn’t — put some crooked numbers up on the scoreboard. And, according to Gundy, they would’ve done it by doing what they do best.
Fling footballs all over the field and see what sticks.
“We’d have thrown it 50 times,” he said. “You like to think Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon could have put together some touchdowns. Get the ball thrown down the field and open some things up. Try to make it exciting, and see what happens.”
…
“You sure would like to have had a shot at it,” Gundy said.
“It kind of hurts to watch it. I just think we could score. We’d use all 52 yards across (the width of) the field. Get people on the edges. Use the vertical game.”
…
“For the most part in the last couple of years, we’ve been able to move the ball and score points against about anybody we played. … It’s been talked about all year from coast to coast: Big 12 offenses, SEC defenses, how do we really know if anybody’s really any good? That (a showdown in the BCS title game) would have been the best way to find out.”
…
“I will say this,” Mike Gundy said as Alabama closed in on Monday night’s 21-0 win against LSU. “I bet you there’ll be a lot of people wish they’d given us a shot to see a different kind of game.”
Granted, there were certainly a lot people who may have preferred a different style of game, as the 14-percent dip in overnight ratings from last year’s Auburn-Oregon title game attests. There are, however, a couple of teeny tiny flaws in Gundy’s logic.
First, the Cowboys would not have been facing the Tide, they would’ve been facing the Tigers. LSU was the unquestioned No. 1 while the Tide squeaked into the title game by the narrowest of margins over the Cowboys. Whether the Cowboys could’ve put scored X number of points by throwing it 50 or 100 points against the Tide simply doesn’t matter.
And secondly, they did have a shot at it…
Given the current system — as inherently flawed and bogus and exclusionary as it is — taking care of business against a team that finished the season 6-7 would not leave the door wide open for the lamenting that’s taking place after the fact. Gundy has no one to blame but himself, his coaching staff and his players.
And, yes, the system that instead of leaning toward equity runs like hell away from it should shoulder some blame as well. Alas, that’s another story for another day, a discussion that’s hopefully coming sooner rather than later.
In the interim, at least one member of the 2011 BcS champions would have no problem taking the situation to the playing field and settling whatever issues Oklahoma State may have with how the season ended.
“I could play them right now,” Tide offensive tackle Barrett Jones said after the win Monday night. “You don’t think we hear that talk? Line up, let’s go.”

SEC sucks, and so does the BcS.
Shoulda, coulda, wanna, but the3 fact is you didn’t get to play in the game because your team lost to a team ranked much lower than you in the regular season.
And Radrtrn,
The SEC sucks to the tune of six BCS titles in a row. Maybe next year we can have a type of playoff system and you can then say that sucks when the SEC wins, number 7 in the row. All conferences play by the same rules and the SEC dominates that set of rules. Change them and the results will still be the same.
No freakin doubt about it. OKlahoma State would have certainly did better, and maybe could have beaten Bama.
LSU was pathetic, and in the first game they BOTH were pathetic.
Bama didn’t deserve the rematch anyway.
This system is corrupt.
Your right!!! It sucks to win & win & win & win. People thought Oregon, or Texas, or OK would beat an SEC team, but they did not. ROLL TIDE, 2011 CHAMPS!
And grats to LSU on a great season, SEC championship is just as big as a BCS title.
The Question is who is the best 1 loss team? I sill don’t feel we really know.
SA John Taylor, Whether you or anyone else likes it, Gundy’s point is well taken and on the money…It would have been a better game if OSU had been on the field with Bama or LSU…and had it been LSU, the score would have been bigger on both sides and the fans would have enjoyed it a hell of lot more…LSU’s pass defense is suspect and Bama exploited it…Bama’s offense is no comparison to OSU’s…It appears that Bama has this great defense..Yeah, great against an offense like LSU’s…When it is all said and done, it would have been a better game even if Stanford had been on the field against LSU…or Bama….
As long as Brent Musberger is announcing the game… I’ll watch.
Yah, you prob woulda scored Gundy, but lost like 28-10. This LSU offense beat Oregon easily. You lost to Iowa State.
I wish Gundy could have played either one of them so he would shut up – although I doubt he would. His 104th ranked defense could not have stopped either one of them and he might have thrown it 75 times – still highly unlikely he would have won. Iowa State ???
As for Musberger, another jackass from ESPN…just give him another drink and tell him to go away!
Congrats to Alabama. Geaux Tigers in 2012!
Maybe that match up wouldn’t have received the lowest viewership in the history of the BCS as the one last night did.
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/01/alabama-lsu_produces_lowest_tv.html
OSU was lucky to win its bowl game (missed Stanford field goal). They didn’t even make a statement in that game to be in the discussion as a national champion.
LSU’s problem is that they were trying to win with a second rate quarterback. They really put together a great team with the exception of the most important position on the field. Ultimately, it cost them.
Thats it people, rag on the SEC and Alabama, instead of what’s broken the BCS. SEC will kick tail with a playoff too.
I don’t care WHO they play. If you can keep ANY team from only being able to cross MIDFIELD ONCE, you’re an amazing unreal team. I’ve never seen a defense like I saw last night… ever.
And that’s doing that to the offense that hung 40+ on Oregon, West Virginia, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, and Georgia.
No dog in the fight at all, but WOW…
Coulda, woulda etc. We’ll never know now.
Taylor — thanks for reminding the Okie Lite fans of their horrible loss to Iowa State. They’re awfully forgetful down there in Stillwater. If I lived there, I’d want to forget reality too.
@jason1214
I agree. I’ll go for a playoff just so all these other schools talking and complaining can shut up. They talk and yap because they know the matchup will never happen.
I’d love to see Boise St, and all the other pretenders shut up when they get stomped and SEC (or USC) wins the title.
Ok State wouldn’t have stood a chance against neither team. Yeah, you would’ve thrown the ball, maybe if you had time to throw, but both defenses would’ve been prepared to stop the pass. Just because you throw 50 times doesn’t mean they’ll complete 50 passes or that those throws would lead to points.
@78lion
And you point is…… Yeah I wouldn’t watch OK State get murdered by either team, but that’s just me. You know what, I’ll change that. I wish OK State would’ve played LSU. Then once Ok State losses 49-10, then people would have no room to talk. Ok State would be the 4th best team in the SEC. Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, hell even South Carolina, are better than OK State. Defenses win championships, bottom line. Want to see a high scoring championship game? Go watch Arena Football.
Quit crying already.
When would he have had time to try 50 passes against the Tide defense. LSU wasn’t too shabby along the offensive line, and they couldn’t get anything going. Alabama would have beaten any team in the country last night, and I hate to admit that being a UGA fan, but the truth is what it is.
OSU, stop whining! Were it not for a panicky freshman kicker, osu would have lost to Stanford too.
You should have started by scoring more against Iowa State
Gundy has drinking his own Kool-Aid.
If Ok State had played Alabama and attempted 50 pass plays, Bama would have had 7 sacks, 11 hits on the QB, forced 2 fumbles and 3 interceptions. The Cowboys offense might have scored 13, but Bama’s defense would have scored 14.
Having said that, it pains me that everyone has to sit around after the fact and debate what they think would happen. Ok State deserved a shot for the title, and a playoff system is the only thing that would have allowed it.
Someone in the NCAA needs to grow an effing brain make something happen playoff-wise. If for no other reason, those clowns are leaving money on the table by NOT providing a playoff for NCAA football. You would think those greedy bass-turds would realize that and pursue the revenue a playoff system would provide.
Pipe down “Gumby”! You played in a Tecmo Bowl conference in which your team was giving up 29 pts per game.
The SEC has 12 teams and all combined to allow 3,209 points this year. In comparison your “defenseless” conference allowed 3,821 points and had the Big 12 has 2 less teams.
Seriously? Oklahoma State played ONE top 25 defense in the country. Number 7 Texas. The next highest was in the 60s with the remainder all falling into the 80s 90s and 100s.
They have NEVER played a defense of the caliber of LSU or Alabama, or for that matter more than half of the SEC.
6 straight BCS championships in the SEC because we play defense.
Kinda hard to throw 50 times when you spend most of the night climbing out from under a pile of Purple or Crimson jerseys behind the line of scrimmage!
Your right!!! It sucks to win & win & win & win. People thought Oregon, or Texas, or OK would beat an SEC team, but they did not. ROLL TIDE, 2011 CHAMPS!
unless you mean OK state you may want to look up the history of SEC vs OU sooners. they didn’t play any sec teams this year though.
OKST omg stop whining! Haha. Sec sucks!? How about 6 championships in a row and 4 DIFFERENT sec teams involved in all of them! Haha wow denial denial denial…. SEC!!! And that bama team last night was NFL caliber… OKST would have gotten SMEARED all over that field against those grown ass men from bama… They deserved to be there and proved it! So get over it … Freaking sore losers I swear…
Just another game where two SEC teams jerk each other off while thousands of crazed rednecks suck on corn whiskey and PBR and brag about how great it is to live below the poverty line. OK State would have beaten either one of these offensively challenged wimps.
Let’s remember that this was the same LSU offense that scored 34 points against Rose Bowl champs Oregon, 40 against Orange Bowl champs WVU, 34 against Cotton Bowl champs Arkansas and 41 against Gator Bowl champs Florida.
Be grateful there’s one sport that still has a regular season that counts for something.
Look at the NFL… 16 weeks of meaningless exhibition games before anyone plays even a single game that really counts.
And rewarding a team that loses SEVEN TIMES during the (exhibition) season with a chance to play in the Super Bowl? What a joke!
So Gundy really thinks that his 120th ranked defense could have slowed BAMA down…the reason that there were so few points and only 1 TD was bc this game was between the 2 best defenses in the country. i don’t care who they put against us last night, we were there for one thing and one thing only…to win..and NOBODY is going to take that away from us…debate all you want, #14 is back in Tuscaloosa!!!
How many NFL players were on the field last night?
LSU or Bama would have emasculation Oklahoma State.
Gundy is a 40+ year old man. He should know T. Boone Picken can’t buy a National Championship.
sprizzle, OSU was ranked where it was because teams were always airing it out to try and come back against them. That’s how it goes. No, they’re not nearly as good as Alabama or LSU on defense, but they’re not as bad as that ranking might make you think, and their offense is incredible.
I think the voters deprived us of an epic matchup that was actually worth watching. Several, actually, if you include the individual matchups. Imagine Dre Kirkpatrick vs. Justin Blackmon!
Anyway, it’s moot, but I’m not going to argue that OSU would’ve beaten Alabama, because Alabama had no business in that game. It should’ve been LSU vs. OSU. It’s ridiculous that LSU beat Alabama on the field, won the division and conference championships, and because they lost what was at least double-jeopardy, they don’t get the title.
But hey, maybe LSU and Alabama will play again next week to see who gets the title. You know, best two outta three.
Bama would have handled the OSU offense just like they did the LSU offense and OSU’s defense is flat out horrible. Bama would have put up big numbers on OSU and even if OSU scored a bit, they still would have been blown out.
OSU is used to playing bad Big-12 and Pac-12 defenses. They wouldn’t have known which way was up after they saw that Bama defense on the field. Actually, OSU wouldn’t have beaten LSU either.
Thats it people, rag on the SEC and Alabama, instead of what’s broken the BCS. SEC will kick tail with a playoff too.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
It’s not hard when the SEC teams are sheltered from having to play in inclement weather. Would love to see a playoff that includes some northern venues. If we can have a Super Bowl outside in the north we can have SEC teams play in the elements too.
This jackass has done a lot of talking lately. Let me know when he’s worth listening to.
Who cares whether Freddie Footballfan is “bored” by an SEC defensive struggle? This isn’t a fargin popularity contest, it’s a matchup between the two best teams, period.
I don’t farm so I am not a redneck. I don’t drink so I wouldn’t be interested in PBR. I am a retired military scientist so I don’t live below the poverty line. And I don’t believe in fantasies so I wouldn’t be foolish enough to believe that Ok. St. even belonged on the same field as either LSU or Alabama. And if it is so damn bad down here, why do all of the Northern snowbirds come down for the winter?
No wonder Gundy has to go around telling people he’s a man. You’d never know it from his junior-high behavior. First he holds a press conference saying that Alabama is the obvious and deserving #2. Then a week later, he takes it back because he thinks he can get his team into the game by making everyone forget they dropped a game to an unranked team (thanks for the graphic reminder, JT).
His team couldn’t manage to beat Iowa State’s defense and he thinks they could have beaten Alabama’s? He thinks his West Coast offense could have beaten the LSU team that decimated Oregon?
Right
Gundy … if you’re the one responsible for teaching your team good sportsmanship and how to lose with dignity … bless their hearts. And if you wanted a chance on the field, you should have lobbied your commissioner to back the SEC’s suggestion of a +1 matchup. Then you’d have gotten to play Alabama for that spot in the title game … and your 15 minutes would be long (and blissfully) over.
Watching this clown has certainly taken the edge off my lifelong dislike of Oklahoma. Go Sooners!
OSU played the game with ISU hours after the plane crash that killed the OSU women’s basketball coach and an assistant coach. The argument can be made that if the game had been postponed (which I think it should have) OSU would have been undefeated.
However, that’s not what happened, so all we can do is wonder “what if” and congratulate ‘Bama.
Hey Gundy, if you’re “a man” like you say in your rant, shut up and take it like one.
I’ve seen a lot of exceptional defensive teams over five decades. Alabama’s not only sets a high standard for college football, I have no doubt that it could stand up against a surprising percentage of NFL offenses. Gundy has to stand behind his team, and it’s natural in hindsight to question the LSU game plan, but anybody who objectively watched the smothering blanket the Tide dropped on the Tigers cannot refute the extraordinary precision, physicality and execution of what should go down as one of the most dominating defensive performances, and seasons, in NCAA history.
Every team with one loss in the top 20 deserves a shot.
Alabama, a team that couldn’t win their divison, let alone their conference, proves that.
Every team with one loss has been screwed by this.
Please, no more, “Im sec guy and I say if this happens then that would happen and you don’t deserve this because I know that this would happen if that happens.”
You don’t know squat. Look at that crap we had to watch last night, last month, these past 5 years.
And another SEC hater heard from. I guess, if you can’t beat them, you have to criticize them. It is not only SEC fans that think that the SEC conference is the best in the NCAA. Read some different articles and you will see that most sports networks believe it also.
When your team can beat the SEC in a championship game, then you have a true complaint.
@b2hokie …
I’m a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. My team played Denver Sunday two days after our running backs coach was burned in a house fire. When the team left for the game, our coach was in a medically induced coma. Now this wasn’t some girl’s coach for the basketball team at Pitt who had no interaction with our football players. This was OUR RUNNING BACKS COACH.
On top of that, ONE-THIRD of our players were out with injuriesd. ONE-THIRD. Of the remaining players, at least three were playing with hobbling injuries. That means we were down HALF our starting squad. We went to overtime, too. And lost.
You know what … I didn’t say post on the PFT threads, “Well, I’ll just wonder what if and congratulate Denver.” I congratulated Denver on a brilliantly devised and executed game plan and didn’t mention one word about our injured coach or our injured players because that is IRRELEVANT. Everybody hurts in football. Everybody suffers setbacks and injuries and tragedies. Alabama had their town blown apart during spring practice! Pittsburgh was outplayed and outcoached by a team that isn’t as good as ours but stepped up when it counted to get the job done on the field of play. Our fans have manned up. Our players have manned up.
I’d be mortified if our guys were exploiting Coach Wilson’s injury the way you people tried to get sympathy votes to the title game on the deaths of women’s basketball coaches. How pathetic can you get?

May want to look at recent history, there. Can’t remember OU winning a BCS bowl game other than UCONN. Or did I miss those OU championships over UF in 2008 and LSU in 2003.
“You don’t know squat. Look at that crap we had to watch last night, last month, these past 5 years.”
———————————————————-
You didn’t have to watch. Surely “Fried Green Tomatoes” was showing somewhere on cable; maybe one of those “Real Housewives” things. Something more suited to the mentality of whiners.
“Who cares whether Freddie Footballfan is “bored” by an SEC defensive struggle? This isn’t a fargin popularity contest, it’s a matchup between the two best teams, period.”
———————————————-
Boo-Yah! Wait till we actually get a playoff, and the also-rans of the SEC lay waste to teams in the [fill in name of conference]. The whining will reach Biblical proportion.
Ps.
All of you who are trying to sell people on Alabama’s defense being able to stop NFL offenses, or compare with NFL defenses,
STOP!
You are embarrassing yourselves!
I am sick of all this noise. When Alabama lost to LSU, I was tremendously disappointed. I believed Alabama was the better team and, in fact, I believed this was the best Tide team I’ve seen in a long time – even better than the team from two years ago.
LSU has a great team, and I felt Alabama played them at least even. It was a tough loss to stomach, because it was so paper-thin and it so easily could have gone the other way. But I never begrudged LSU the win, and I believed Alabama getting a rematch was a longshot. Too many other teams merely had to take care of business and the Tide, legitimately, would be sitting home on January 9.
But then, none of those teams did take care of business. Boise State, Stanford, Oklahoma State (and I might even include Virginia Tech). It was as if they all wanted to give Bama a chance to prove the first game with LSU was a mistake.
Now the whiners are coming out of the woodwork. Most disappointing is OSU’s coach Mike Gundy. Saying your team would have scored touchdowns on Alabama’s defense is meaningless (particularly because there’s no chance they would have been playing Bama in a title game), and sort of classless given the timing. If your team should ever earn a national title, I hope Nick Saban won’t disparage your efforts the very next day. You know, Saban could honestly have said he’s pretty sure his team would have beaten Iowa State, but as far as I know he never did.
Maybe you could have lit it up against Bama (I doubt it). Maybe Alabama would have dropped 45 on your defense, the way Kansas State did, or 34 the way Louisiana-Lafayette did. Maybe your team would have struggled to put up enough points to compensate for that defense, the way you did against Texas A&M, Kansas State, Stanford, and, oh yeah, Iowa State. You had a lot of close games this year, coach. Alabama had one. The rest were blow outs, or nearly so.
So, you would have thrown 50 times against Alabama? Maybe that’s what you did wrong against Stanford – you only threw it 42 times and you won that one by the skin of your teeth. (I feel bad for Stanford’s freshman kicker.) Maybe you would have thrown 50 times against the Tide. Maybe Bama would have picked off four of those throws. Maybe they would have sacked Weeden six or seven times. Maybe Trent Richardson would have run for 175 yards and three touchdowns against your defense. Alabama did score 36 points a game this year, you know.
If you really want to put your sour-grapes speculations out there, why spread them in USA Today? I’d say the comments section of a collegefootballtalk article is a suitable outlet for that sort of nonsense.
The SEC is a fine football conference. Only the Pac-12 comes close this year. But talk about Oklahoma State or Oregon not belonging on the same field with an SEC team is wishful thinking. No one knows what would have happened if there had been an 8 team playoff instead of the present arrangement, except that whoever won truly deserves the title. Two things make the lack of a playoff more telling this year than ever. First, there are exactly 8 teams that belong in the tournament: 3 SEC, 2 Pac-12, 1 Big-12, 1 Big-10, and 1 CUSA. Second, most of the bowl games this year, including the Orange, Sugar, and BCS title, weren’t worth watching unless you have a rooting or gambling interest.
To those saying SEC sucks, look at the BCS National Championship history:
SEC has NEVER lost a BCS National championship game, with 8 total, starting with Tennessee in 1998-99, LSU in 2003-4, Florida 2006-7, LSU 2007-8, Florida 2008-9, Alabama 2009-10, Auburn 2010-11, Alabama 2011-12.
Ohio St has the most BCS appearances and wins, but… grats to winning bowls that don’t matter?
“myopinion”, are you saying Oklahoma BEAT Florida, and BEAT LSU (“championships OVER UF in 2008 and LSU in 2003″)? LSU 21-14 in 2003. Florida 28-14 in 2008.
I’ll assume you were being sarcastic
Tell Gumby to stop crying! It’s easy to talk smack after the fact. Be careful what you wish for because you might get it and get hammered by Alabama.
ROLL TIDE!
There is a reason the SEC owns 8 BCS Championships and you guys 2! DEFENSE! DEFENSE! and did i say DEFENSE!
Matbe you guys will get that through your heads one day!
@tide4life …
Hey now … wait a minute. When I’d finally finished celebrating and posting and talking to my family (one of the players handed my nephew his game gloves!) and started trying to wind down about 3 a.m. … I did watch a little of the Real Housewives LOL
@olskool711 …
As an NFL fan, I’d never say a college team could beat an NFL team. But most of Alabama’s 2009 defense walked straight out of the BCS Championship onto the starting squads of NFL teams. I expect it will be the same for most of this defense. So if history repeats, then these guys are good enough to start in the NFL right now.
The truth of the matter is Oklahoma State wouldn’t have had the opportunity to throw the ball 50 times. Bama would have either intercepted several of their passes and possibly scored on defense as they have this year and they would have stopped them on 3rd down. Bama is #1 on 3rd down stops. Our defense would have tore apart Oklahoma State’s offense and Oklahoma State would NOT have been able to stop Bama’s offense. Bama would have scored mostly TD’s on Oklahoma State, probably at least 10 of them. LSU has the 2nd best defense in the country, and if they couldn’t stop Bama from scoring, I am absolutely positive that Oklahoma State wouldn’t have been able to stop Bama from making many TD’s.
I am not a fan of the SEC (live in North East) but I don’t see how anyone can effectively argue that they are not the best football conference in the country. Six consecutive BCS Title game victories speaks for itself. There are a lot of very good football programs across the country and on a given day, sure, anybody can beat anybody, but Bama’s defense was so impressive, making a pretty good LSU offense look like a bunch of high schoolers. Kudos Role Tide fans…A most impressive ending to a great season.
And Deb, you are spot on regarding the impact that Bama’s defensive players will have on the NFL Draft. Many of these guys will certainly compete for starting jobs in the NFL next season. That’s impressive.
If I remember right the AP and coaches poll from ALL OVER the country voted Alabama as #2 not just people in the SEC. Get over it! The best team in the country just won their 14th Natl Championship!
Notice how he doesn’t say We’d have beat either of those teams.
What kind of bold statement is saying how many times you’d throw it???

————————————————–
Deb…Are you serious? Coach Gundy a “Clown”…You obviously don’t know what the hell you are saying AS USUALLY.
Did you watch him after the Fiesta Bowl dedicate the victory to the members of the OSU Athletic Department who died in a recent plan crash (called the “four”) to include have the widow of the Women’s Basketball Coach on the stand and presenting her the trophy?
That’s not a “clown”…That is a good man.
Really what did you want him to say?
That OSU DID NOT deserve to play in the BCS Championship?
That NO WAY OSU could have scored or played defense against either LSU or Alabama?
He stood up for his team and spoke up for the reasons his team should be in the Championship. Sorry if it got your nose bent out joint, but it is his opinion as the head coach that missed out on the championship by a few percentage points to a BCS computer.
EXACTLY WHAT NIC SABAN WOULD SAY IF THE SITUATION WAS REVERSED.
He is done more for the OSU football program than anyone that ever came before him. Yes he has his “Youtube” moments that are very similar to your NUMEROUS silly postings.
Congratulations to you on showing the rest of the posters on CFT just how shallow and inmature you.
Sorry your are so insecure on your team’s BCS Championship that you feel compelled to keep typing your drivel.
You should be proud of your team and quit calling people like Coach Gundy (who you haven’t even ever met) names.
Also sorry for your “dislike of Oklahoma”, it is a state that like Alabama has two great universities AND football programs full of hard working people that feel passionate for our schools.
>>Shoulda, coulda, wanna, but the fact is you didn’t get to play in the game because your team lost to a team ranked much lower than you in the regular season.<<
And another fact is that in the regular season Alabama lost to a team that scored ZERO points in its bowl game. Don't like that? Too bad..you're gonna hear it.
And if people didn't want to know what OK State had to say they wouldn't have asked Gundy. Deal with it.
Gundy calls himself a man and crys like a Pu$$y. Okie a&m couldn’t have scored more than once or maybe twice on either of these teams. LSU or BAMA would have scored 50 plus on them.
@raiderredleg …
My long-time dislike of Oklahoma was a reference to the University of Oklahoma … which is why I said “Go Sooners” at the end of it
I don’t have any problem with the state or people of Oklahoma. This is a football blog and that was obvious to anyone with half a brain. No one has said anything against the people of Oklahoma.
You’re the fool who’s been posting venom for almost 24 hours about the team that won the championship. I know what I say when my team loses: “Congratulations.” That’s what I posted last year when our arch-rival Auburn won the National Championship. That’s what I posted in November when LSU beat us. That’s what I posted Sunday night when my Steelers lost to Denver. And I didn’t mention one word about us losing HALF our starters to injury or our running backs coach being in an induced coma because of a fire two days before the game. That’s OUR running backs coach, not the girl’s coach at Pitt. I didn’t mention it because it’s not relevant. Denver outcoached us and outplayed us. Good for them!
What did I expect Coach Gundy to say? Well, I expected him to say “Congratulations.” This is not about Oklahoma State. It’s not about your basketball coaches. It’s not about you or what you woulda, coulda shoulda done if you’d played in the championship game. You’re coach might be a good person in some respects, but he’s setting a sad example of the same bad sportsmanship you’re displaying. No one cares what he would have done against the Tigers. That’s nice, Mike. Too bad you couldn’t beat Iowa State. Now sit down and shut up. Have the good grace not to keep trying to get your 15 minutes at another team’s expense.
And raiderredleg, if you’re not man enough to congratulate Alabama, at least be man enough not to keep whining because your team didn’t step up and beat Iowa State when they had the opportunity. If they had, they’d have been in New Orleans. I don’t see any Stanford or Arkansas fans on here crying like you are. Grow up.
@ Deb,
Roger…You use the word “clown”, “shut up”, but I will try grow up.
I never “whinned” about my team losing to Iowa State, just like you never “whinned” about your team losing to LSU early this year.
Goodness get your facts straight lady.
You may not care about what Coach Gundy says, but obviously fans of the OSU program does as well as general college football fans.
Why don’t YOU have the good grace that to rub two brain cells together and enjoy your team’s win.
If OSU had gotten into the championship game AND won like yours, I would be celebrating with my fellow OSU fans on a great season. Not trolling CFT looking to hurl insults and belittling other teams coaches and fans.
CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING YESTERDAY AND CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING PART OF A FAN BASE THAT IS SO RABID THAT IT WILL SAY ANYTHING AND POISION ANY TREE THAT GETS IN THE WAY OF YOUR BELOVED TIDE!
Gee, raiderredleg, bitter much? LOL
I’m not deaf, sweetie. No need to shout. My, my … what a heartfelt, sportsmanlike congrats. Yes, when you keep whining that you weren’t in the championship game, you are whining about your loss to Iowa State. Had you not lost to them, you’d have been in the game. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m thoroughly enjoying our win.
Yes, I know many people are interested in Coach Gundy’s comments. That’s why it’s sad he didn’t set a good example and just say “Congratulations” rather than pulling a Rex Ryan who gave a post-Super Bowl interview last year telling everyone how they’d have beaten the Packers. Too bad they didn’t win the title game.
And yes, I am very proud of the team and our fans for staying focused after the devastating tornadoes that ravaged the city. And I’m proud of the Alabama fan base that raised $50,000 for the care of Auburn’s trees after one extremist fan did a horrible thing. There’s one in every crowd. We had him. Oklahoma State has you.
The SEC is dominant because the college players use the SEC as a stepping stone to the NFL not to get an education.
All you folks that say that Bama would beat the world and Ok St would never score, that this team would destroy all others, are fools. Any team is capable of beating any other team on a given day. Vandy(and probably 30 others) would have beaten LSU last night. You never know.
OS probably would have scored, but Alabama would probably put up 50 against their defense instead of the #2 defense. But is NOT going to happen so quit your crying!!!
@Deb
Nice rebut to raiderredleg. Congratulations seems so easy to say. Sheesh…
Most good conferences players do the same thing. Just take a look at the kids that have declared for early entry in the NFL. You think they are only from the SEC. At least be realistic and check your facts before you post something like this.
@florida727:
Yes, I was. hatrhurter was expounding upon how great OU’s history was against the SEC. Had to remind him of the games that matter.
The best way for these coaches and fans of other conferences to prove that the SEC is not all that good, is to beat the teams that knocked you down and get in the bowl game. Until then, The SEC will continue to rule NCAA football. It might not be easy to swallow, but until proven otherwise, the SEC is the best conference right now. It could change in a few years, but not with words alone. Do the things necessary as a team to get up to that plateau and then you have accomplished something. Calling people from the south as Rednecks, complaining that their football players are all going to the NFL, because they don’t graduate or study, and coaching in hind sight will not get the team there.
Thanks “myopinion”.
It’s easy for Gundy to state that his team could score on Alabama when he doesn’t have to PROVE it on the field… just like it’s easy for SEC/Alabama fans to say they wouldn’t score and/or that Alabama would score 50 against OK State’s defense, because they don’t have to PROVE it either.
Bottom line is that the fans get cheated because a bunch of greedy bastards in three-piece suits can’t agree on a suitable playoff format so that the title can be decided like it is in every other sport… on the field.
My favorite options I’ve heard so far is either a six-team playoff, with the top 2 teams getting first round byes… or an 8-team playoff with the 6 most prominent conference champions getting in with two at-large teams, and they get re-seeded after each round. Of course, since both sound good on paper, the suits will never approve either.

actually i was making sure the other guy wasn’t talking about OU since all he put was OK which is the abbreviation for the state not for either of the 2 oklahoma teams. oh, and those 2 games against lsu and florida only changed their records against OU from losing records to tied. i know why you didn’t bother mentioning the other SEC powerhouse alabama though. why is recent history any more important? it’s still in the past.
actually, my bad. florida is 1-0 against OU.
First of all….Not a PAC 10…BIG 12….BIG 10…or SEC fan…..So, before everyone assumes I am biased by anything in particular….NOT THE CASE…..I live in the South…Warm climate…Its just great…However, I can still manage to ….SINCE MOST “fans” of any particular team or conference are SO BLATANTLY AND OBVIOUSLY INCAPABLE of trying to do the same….Be sensible when debating 2 sides of any dispute………….
What does it all mean…..
FACT: Iowa State….Yep…Definitely finished 6-7
FACT: Iowa State, it turns out was 54th ranked
on Offense…..Why is this important……
IT ISN’T……As much as, OFFENSE is not
important to ANY SEC Program, or fan.
(Only Georgia, Arkansas, and Alabama’s
offense, from the SEC, was ranked higher
than ISU……Most of the rest of the 16 (11
of the 16 were ranked 88th or lower—–
Just behind the likes of Troy, Ball State,
Bowling Green, and the Tulane Green
Wave—Yes, they still have a team!!!))
FACT: Oklahoma State Definitely lost to ISU
(Someone insightful mentioned the plane
crash right before the ISU game, and the
death of a Coach that Gundy was close
to, as a possible distraction to the focus
of the entire team. This person pointed
out that that it should have possibly been
postponed because of that. Someone else,
decided it was more important to COM-
PLETELY MISS THE POINT of that
comment, and bring the Steelers coach,
and the Broncos game into the discussion.
He then bothered to pointlessly explain
that HE never used it as an excuse………
BRAVO for him……..People are baffling….
The FACT is that it is reasonable to ass-
ume that both situations had to weigh
VERY heavily on both teams, and it is
REASONABLE to assume that it might
very well have effected each teams perf-
ormances in immeasurable ways.
But WHO KNOWS RIGHT?
FACT: Oklahoma State won their Conference
outright(Nope—-No Conference Champ-
ionship for them, or the voters to
“factor” in. However, not their fault….
They did their part, and they didn’t miss
their Conf. Championship game by virtue
of not playing their way into it….They are
a “victim” of Nebraska and the BIG 10.
FACT: They were however 7-0 VS the BCS top
30….The only team who can claim any-
where close to that many Ws, and the
ONLY UNDEFEATED team VS the TOP
30.
FACT: Alabama played in the BCS Nat’l Champ.
Game WITHOUT WINNING THEIR
OWN BCS CONFERENCE CHAMPION-
SHIP?????????????????
FACT: By the way, that was the “reason” of the
many pundits of OSU “deserving” a shot
at the title game….That they “Didn’t
play in Conference Title Game”
(That is strange since AlabamA was sit-
ting home for theirs!)—So 1 shot isn’t
enough…They DESERVED a 2nd………..?
….HMMMMMMMMMMM?????? NO!
FACT: It would be an understatement to say
that Alabama’s Defense is SOOO-solid.
(I mean, I didn’t see 1 THROW beyond
10 yards the ENTIRE GAME, until LSUs
2nd to last poss. on 3 and 18. ZEROOOO!
Never even bothered to try…..Yet, they
did mange to AWFULLY RUN the option
….(PSST…BTW, not because of the Tide’s
defense!….Terrible concept, with an inept
QB………..I grew up watching Nebraska
and Oklahoma RUN the ACTUAL option.
And what you saw last night, was not IT!)
Anyone who has a CLUE, agrees with that
OBVIOUS STATEMENT!
FACT: Alabama actually managed to move the
ball 11 times VS. LSU in both games, inside
the 30 yard line…….Pretty amazing………
Even more amazing(Sorry…I meant Inept)
11 STRAIGHT FG attempts…………
Making 7………..Pretty sweat! For CRYIN’
OUT LOUD the “Good Hands ALLSTATE
PLAYER OF THE GAME” was the…………..
…………………………………………………………………
………………..FREAKIN’ HOLDER on the FG
UNIT! Brent Musberger, who couldn’t
quit reading off the of his Producer’s Cue
Cards the entire game, that directed his
slobbering comments towards Saban ALL
freakin’ game. At one point, after the 5th
consecutive FG, managed to, without
noticably chuckling, state in idiotic and
IRONIC fashion that “This Alabama team
is one FINELY coached football team!”
—–IRONIC, wouldn’t you find that
statement, considering they have a QB
Coach and WR and TE Coaches on the staff
AS WELL….But I guess they do not factor
into that when they seemed to have MIS-
PLACED THE END ZONE somewhere!
FACT:Outside of Arkansas and LSU, they played
a grand total of WHO? I already ment-
ioned 11 of the 16 ranked 88th or WORST
—LSU was even ranked below ISU at
57th….So Alabama played 1…..Exactly 1
OFFENSE ranked higher than 57th……..
And Arkansas was ranked 28th…….
SORRY-The Defensive “RespectOmeter”
just dropped way off in light of this……..
Now some YAHOOs will definitely “TRY”
to SOMEHOW counter this with………………
Some kind of justification, to echo the same
“Greatest Defenses of ALL TIME” or
something of the like……But COME ON,
TRY to be REAL for just a second……………
It is a pretty fair and SAFE statement to
point out that the SEC is the Offensive
“Red-headed Step-Child” of College Foot-
ball.
FACT: Save it!!!!! Come to think of it, SAVE
your….I live here in the South, I have
heard for years about how AWESOME
the SEC is, how AWESOME our D is…..
ESPN-Every media outlet blowing all of the
SMOKE, until the rest of us “NORMAL and
RATIONAL” football fans, who can manage
to see both sides of the ball, before we can
“Judge” how GOOD a team really is, want
to gouge out each one of our eyeballs……….
Its not your fault, you now don’t even
question something as OBVIOUSLY quest-
ionable as your schedule, and the offensive
GURUs and juggernauts you played this
year! Doesn’t it stand to reason that
REALLY BAD offenses, equals pretty dec-
ent Defensive statistics. I know Alabama’s
D is a very good D…..And that may be the
case, but your season is not exactly filled
with examples of even “average” offenses
that you shut down. So, it, then, makes it
impossible rather difficult to determine the
TRUE quality of your D………….
FACT: Maybe Ive been unfair…..Here…Let’s look
at your NON-Conference schedule…………..
Maybe that can help your argument………..
Woops….Nope…..That doesn’t either…..It
actually helps my point…WOWWWWW!
UMMMM….Kent State…Penn State(And
before you use this as some kind of bench-
mark…..They were 86th offensively)…….
North Texas(Wow)……And last, but cert-
ainly not least…….Georgia Southern(????
YIKES)…And THEY EVEN managed 21 pts
against your D……Division II????? A home
game??? And if Alabama doesn’t block the
FG to end the half, and return it for a TD,
They would have went into HALFTIME
TIED…..WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW
is all can be said to that! National Champ-
ionship caliber…..You played Arkansas and
LSU and went 1 and 1 against them..Other
than that…..NOBODY WHO SCORED ALL
SEASON VS. ANYONE AND EVERYONE!
FACT: Did I mention Alabama didn’t even win
their OWN BCS Conference, in an already
WELL ESTABLISHED offensively PUTRID
Conference! You are JUST THAT GOOD!!!
AND FINALLY……That may have ranked in my
personal TOP 5 games…ALL TIME….For the
FUGLIEST….Most obsurdly terrible games I
have ever had the MISFORTUNE of watching!
That is just HOW “GOOD” you are!
And I am FAR from being an Oklahoma State Fan……But man, Blackmon and the Cowboys
would have SMOKED YOU! WITHOUT A DOUBT———–Consider yourselves the MOST FORTUNATE TEAM of all time!!!!!!
PURE AWFUL!!!!
@themostpainfulgametowatchever -
Man, whatever you are smoking, either lay off for a while or pass it around. Maybe decaf is an option you should consider, too. What made your dim ass watch a game that was so bad you had to post a epistle about it? Doea your TV only get ESPNU?
Unwad your panties, junior.
Hey Toad4life….
Actually…How many people do you know that can stop themselves, or pry themselves away from watching a TRAIN WRECK….Not many….Your TUNNEL vision must surpass most……Just remember, it is that STOUT SCHEDULE that is even more impressive than your “Whatever you are smoking” OH SO WITTY retort…..You HAVE to be some naive, I just started watching this game called football right before the Georgia Southern game, voted for Obama because “He is the $#1T like Alabama football”, college student….It is surprising that, with your “VAST” football knowledge, you have yet to reasonably evaluate the TRUE measure of your season and your team. Atleast enough to conceed that you are DEFINITELY Nat’l Champs, but ……MAN……EVERY single aspect(from the offensively challenged Conference, to the even more comical out-of-Conference schedule, to “somehow deserving” a SECOND shot to play the team that beat you already, in a TRULY EPIC 9-6 laugher, preventing you from winning the DIVISION YOU PLAY IN—-LET ALONE YOUR CONF. CHAMPIONSHIP for cryin’ out loud………….AND the MEDIA MACHINE effort to keep the “powerful and deserving” albeit offensively inept, SEC Conference in the conversation that THEY DO NOT DESERVE….When the ENTIRE Country outside of your BRAINWASHED Schools SEE THIS as obviously as we ALL SEE the joke on all of us that is OBAMA! )………That is all you need, every once in awhile…..A SIMPLE REALITY CHECK!!! I know it is tough, to be BRAINWASHED and AWARE at the same time……..Let me know when you can ackowledge that despite all of the Brent Musberger PATS ON THE BACK, and all of your DORM friends “knowledge” about how great your team is., and what the BCS Trophy says………….The REALITY is that EVERYTHING that led up to the game, with the CORRUPT system that put you in that game somehow, and your PAPER-THIN schedule……THE ENTIRE CONVERSATION IS A BAD JOKE on ALL OF US TRUE FANS OF THE GAME!
Now, try and make a JOKE out the 100 MILLION of us that know what a TRUE JOKE it is!
Not only had to post an epistle/spit-spraying rant, but had to to it under a special, I’m-mad-as-hell username, created just for this tirade. Sad, really.
The Tide is the best team in the nation. Deal with it.
The SEC rules. Deal with it.
I know true fans. True fans are friends of mine. You, sir, are NO true fan.
Deal with it.
Fans everywhere listen up. There doesn’t need to be any ranting or raving over the game. We should take Gundy’s comments as what they were, hypothetical. The contraction “We’d” = we would. As in we would have thrown the ball 50 times. I’m sure before the game LSU said We’d like to run the option and score 5 touchdowns on Alabama’s defense. We’d have gotten people to the edges. LSU probably said we’d like to get Jefferson to the edges and thrown deep to Ruben Randle. The bottom line is neither of these things happened. Did LSU play poorly, absolutely, was this due to them having an off night or a good defense. Probably some of both. Gundy believes in his team and his players that’s not a bad thing. I believe in Alabama as a team and I believe in our offense and defense. I predicted that we could blow out LSU by 20 or 30 and we did. I believe in them. I like watching good defense, when a defense stands strong and takes it as a personal attack when someone makes a good play on them. So the game was exciting for me. But in the spirit of being hypothetical.
We’d have picked Weeden off 2 times and knocked him out of the game, he is 28 years old. I’m 30 so I know how he feels.
We would have been waiting for you when you got to the edges.
The vertical game would have been a blind toss up because you wouldn’t have had the time to wait for your receivers to get downfield.
It is interesting however that LSU was heralded as the number one team all year and then after Alabama dismantled them, then it’s like they are just awful. They did score at least 40 points against 9 of the thirteen games they played and were close on a couple of other teams. These teams included West Virginia, Oregon, Arkansas, Auburn, and Georgia. All ranked teams at the time. So they didn’t have trouble scoring against those teams.
Anyway food for thought. Have a great day everyone no matter who you root for.
With a Crying babies like Gundy the 4 game playoff will not make a difference. When the playoff starts, who ever is 5,6,7 will be crying they should be there as well. This year Arkansas and K State had more to complain about than anyone for not getting a BCS game. The rules kept Arkansas out and K state just didn’t get asked which was a terrible wrong. However, you didn’t hear Bill Synder or Bobby Petrino crying like babies or saying how they would beat someone they couldn’t. They were gracious and glad to be where they were. It’s called CLASS and something the LITTLE BOY gundy doesn’t have.
Gundy,
You would have needed to throw the ball 50+ times and guess what?
You’d have been picked off 5 times, sacked 7 times and the score would be 35-10 at the end of the game. LSU already showed what the SEC does to “high powered” offenses against Oregon and West Virginia and look what happened to them!
Take care of business before talking crap, Iowa State sucks and so does OK St.
ROLL TIDE!!
@187onsandusky
“It’s not hard when the SEC teams are sheltered from having to play in inclement weather. Would love to see a playoff that includes some northern venues. If we can have a Super Bowl outside in the north we can have SEC teams play in the elements too”.
I think this is the best excuse I’ve heard yet. Guess that means teams in the West & Southwest are in trouble too. A Plus 1 is all we’re gonna get people, and location will likely be warm weather cities or domed stadiums, much like it is now. Deal with it.
