Vols reportedly eyeing Tide defensive assistant as coordinator

Two days after being a part of the coaching staff that game-planned the shutting down of LSU’s offense in the BcS title game, one Alabama assistant could be moving up the coaching ladder.

Citing a source familiar with the process, the Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that Tide defensive assistant Sal Sunseri is expected to meet Wednesday with head coach Derek Dooley and athletic director Dave Hart regarding Tennessee’s vacancy at defensive coordinator. The job has been open since the first of the year, when coordinator Justin Wilcox left for the same position at Washington.

Sunseri, whose sons Tino and Vinnie are a quarterback at Pitt and defensive back at ‘Bama, respectively, has been the assistant head coach for defense/outside linebackers for the Tide since January of 2009. Prior to that, Sunseri spent seven seasons as the defensive line coach of the Carolina Panthers. He’s previously been a coordinator during stops at Alabama A&M, Illinois State and Iowa Wesleyan.

The Vols could/should have a new coordinator in place by the end of the week, whether it be the Tide assistant or another candidate.

In addition to Sunseri, current Clemson coordinator Kevin Steele and former Miami head coach Randy Shannon, among others, has been linked to the Vols job.
