With Pease out, Tide turns attention to Schottenheimer

Already connected to one SEC job since the calendar flipped from 2011 to 2012, Brian Schottenheimer‘s name has surfaced in connection to yet another job in the conference.

Schottenheimer, “let go” by the New York Jets as their offensive coordinator earlier this week, will meet with Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa Wednesday and discuss the Tide’s vacant offensive coordinator position, the Birmingham News reports. The paper notes that Schottenheimer was in New Orleans for the Tide’s BcS title game win over LSU.

Saban has been searching for a replacement since Jim McElwain was hired as the head coach at Colorado State. McElwain remained on the staff as coordinator through the title game.

The 38-year-old Schottenheimer played quarterback at Florida from 1994-96 after transferring from Kansas, and was reportedly a target of his alma mater for their coordinator job. Most of his 15-year coaching career has been spent at the NFL level, although he did spend a couple of seasons at the collegiate level with Syracuse (1999) and USC (2000).

The Tide could have some NFL competition for Schottenheimer’s services, however; there have been rumblings that, if Marty Schottenheimer, Brian’s dad, were to land the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job, his son could become his coordinator.

Saban has already reportedly interviewed former Boise State coordinator Brent Pease for the opening. Florida announced earlier today that Pease had left the Broncos to become the Gators’ coordinator.
