Nussmeier expected to land Tide’s coordinator job

With Brian Schottenheimer and Dirk Koetter opting to remain at the NFL level, Alabama has decided to pluck its new offensive coordinator from the collegiate ranks.

According to Tom Dienhart of the Big Ten Network, Doug Nussmeier will become the Tide’s new coordinator.  The hiring, if it comes to fruition, comes a few days after Nussmeier interviewed for the position.

An official announcement from the school is not expected today.

Nussmeier had spent the past three season in the same capacity at Washington, although head coach Steve Sarkisian was in charge of calling plays on game day.  At Alabama, Nussmeier will call the offensive shots, which likely was the deciding factor in his decision to move across the country.

As part of Sarkisian’s first coaching staff, Nussmeier has been one of the factors behind the complete transformation/reclamation of the Huskies’ offense.  The year prior to the arrival of Nussmeier as part of Sarkisian‘s first coaching staff at UW, the Huskies finished the 2008 season 117th in scoring offense (13.3 ppg) and 116th in total offense (263.2 ypg); in 2011, UW finished 25th (33.4 ppg) and 38th (409.6 ypg) in those categories, respectively.

Prior to his time at UW, Nussmeier spent a year as Fresno State’s coordinator and three years as Michigan State’s quarterbacks coach, with two years as an assistant with the St. Louis Rams in between.

He will replace Jim McElwain, who agreed to become the head coach at Colorado State late last year.

    I know I got a lot of thumbs down the other say when I said not getting Koetter was good for the Tide, but I stand by that opinion and feel this is a better hire.

    raysfan1, I can’t for the life of me figure out why you got those thumbs down–unless the people flipping you the thumb just don’t watch NFL football. Jack Del Rio is a defensive guy. That means Koetter pretty much had control of the Jags’ offense. Egads!! I never thought we could get Schottenheimer because he’s an NFL guy, but he managed to get Mark Sanchez to two AFC Championships. Mark freakin’ Sanchez. That took some talent. And he worked with Phil Rivers for the first two years of his career. So he would have been the better option of those two.

    I like the Nussmeier pick, though. By bringing in Pease and Nussmeier, Nick’s signaling that he wants to rev up the offense. McCarron’s got the talent to push it, so I’m looking forward to seeing what these guys can do. As long as we keep the rock-’em-sock-’em defense, I’m good with being more aggressive on offense.

    I agree, seems as if Nick is ramping up the offense. I don’t know a lot about Nussmeier but he has a good record. As long as Saban is around Bama’s defense will be scary. I was not excited about the Boise guy but we will see how he does at Fla. Saban picks winners.

    No one really cares about trailer trash redneck happenings in nowhere, AL…what a bunch of trashy people…after seeing the video of these gumps violating a passed out LSU fan in a Krystal, I am completely convinced that they are the ultimate bottom feeders….i would rather lose the national championship than wake up a toothless, mullet wearing redneck in tuskeyloser, al…these people wonder why america laughs at them….

    Wow, sounds like a really sore loser. Not all Alabama fans are what you described just like not all LSU fans are a classless loser like you.

    There are not any classless programs in the SEC. There are of coarse classless people everywhere which is noticed in some of the posts here. Alabama is a great state as is louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and yes even Tennesee:-) On any given year 4 teams are top 10 teams and usualy 6 in the top 20. No other league can say that. Add a basketball championship ever few years and owning track and field as well as baseball, you have the best programs in the country! SEC SEC

    mrslay1 …

    rajuncajun28 has none of the SEC camaraderie the rest of us generally express. He was posting the same vulgar comments about Alabama long before our team leveled his in the title game. It’s probably taken him the full week to recover from his post-game depression. But we just have to feel sorry for guy who’s devoid of any sportsmanship and too big a fool to grasp that the world of people that look down on Southerners don’t consider cajun hicks any better than redneck hicks. Bless his bitter little heart.

    @bamasleeper13 …

    No, I didn’t want Pease either. But I can’t be objective about anything connected to Boise State. To me, it’s just not a Division I program … and the blue field gives me the willys.

    Wow I see some of the LSU fan base is still bitter……its gonna be a long winter if you don’t let go Rajuncajun28.

    @Deb

    How could you take dig at Boise? Now all the “they should get a shot at the National Title” bobo’s will come out of the woodwork…. I still haven’t gotten the whining Oklahoma State fans out of my system.

    @jason1214 …

    ROFL … good point! The Boise crowd are used to me. I just hate that field. If they’d get a big grownup field, I’d stop :)
