Westboro Baptist ‘Church’ to picket Paterno’s funeral

Of course they will.  That’s just how bottom-feeding cockroaches who live and slither underneath a banner of “religion” like them roll.  Or troll as the case may be.

As most, but not all, the nation mourns the passing of Joe Paterno, the infamous Westboro Baptist “Church” has announced its intentions to picket the funeral of the legendary head coach.  Margie Phelps, the wife of WBC leader Fred Phelps, sent out a series of vitriolic and disturbing tweets Sunday morning in the wake of Paterno’s death, confirming anew that the “church” is nothing more than a group of sociopaths masquerading as ambassadors of their God:

This should not come as a surprise, of course.  This is the same “church” that pickets the funerals of soldiers killed in combat; has a headline on its website that reads “Thank God for 12 more dead troops. We are praying for 12,000 more”; planned to picket the funerals of children murdered or perished in a house fire; sent a letter of praise to Saddam Hussein; and said the attacks on 9-11 were God’s way of “smiting fag America“.

As with all their other abhorrent behavior, we’re quite certain God is very pleased to have His name attached to their latest planned endeavor.

Someone should kick these protesters asses if they talk any garbage @ Joe Paternos funeral!

    RIP Joe Paterno!

  2. brewcrewfan54 says: Jan 22, 2012 2:18 PM

These people are amazing. If everything about America is so bad to them they should feel free to move the hell out.

  3. jdillydawg says: Jan 22, 2012 2:18 PM

Someone needs to go pimp Margie out. Maybe to one of those Taliban guys our troops are fighting against. While she’s doing God’s duty pleasuring the terrorists, she can feel good about our troops standing by.

What a waste of space this woman and her cause are.

    Bombs away!

Problem is…based on the post on another article on this site…there are lots of people with the same mind set as Westboro in the US. An many of them are not religious freaks, they are simply close minded, insensitive morons. Joe DID NOT traps anyone. Yes, he could and possibly should have done more…but I guarantee he did more than most people who would have. Moans anyone who believes otherwise is naive. There are movies about people seeing a crim and ignoring it, there is a stigma to being a snitch. Joe shoulda done more, but he is not the villain. Let him rest in peace.

  7. blueinok says: Jan 22, 2012 2:22 PM

Hopefully they will not be given a permit to picket. I know that they have been prevented from being visibly seen by bikers who form a barrier between them and the family of fallen soldiers. I do not know if they have “church” status in regards to tax status – if they do – they should really be investigated – it seems they are more political that religious.

  8. helenh777 says: Jan 22, 2012 2:23 PM

This is so stupid. No way the Great I Am approves of this group that calls themselves a church.
JoPa has passed. Noone has any control over him now. His soul has gone into eternity. God alone knows exactly what happen & He is the only one who knows what is to become of JoPa. The only ones to be harmed by this nonsense is his family. How horrible this is for them.
No matter how you feel. It is done. Let his family live in peace and pray that you always make the right decisions. Pray for the children. Pray that they are better men in spite of what happened. Let the courts take care of Sandusky. If they don’t the truth is known by God.None of us actually knows what happened. Maybe it will all come out in court.

  9. southernpatriots says: Jan 22, 2012 2:23 PM

JT: Several family members and also several friends confronted the WBC family of radical protesters over the past decades. More than one WBC family member is a lawyer and files suits against various venues for their right to protest and disrupt. What a disgrace. On several occasions, great men and women, in some cases dear to our heart, members of biker clubs barricaded the routes, preventing WBC from gaining the newscoverage and disruption they wanted. Maybe this time, some former big linemen and other positions who are now in the pros may form the barricade.

We are sorry to hear of JoePa’s passing. May his family and loved ones find comfort in this hour. Our prayers are with them. Several Penn State volunteers were working with us in Appalachia and have taken leaves from this work to return home. We wish them travel mercies and God speed.

  10. blueinok says: Jan 22, 2012 2:24 PM

Perhaps instead of a line of bikers – we could see a white out.

  11. goblue714 says: Jan 22, 2012 2:25 PM

I’m all for putting on black hoods and kicking these peoples a$$e$, I don’t care what country we live in you should never be allowed to do what they do. They should have their church status revoked and be thrown in jail as enemy combatants of the United States.

  12. righton989 says: Jan 22, 2012 2:26 PM

For PSU jock supporters, it will always be about how many football games JVP coached and never about how his self-promotions made him millions or how many boys’ lives he helped destroy by allowing his life-long pedophile buddy access to the PSU shower rape rooms. RIH.

  13. barnesaintnoble says: Jan 22, 2012 2:28 PM

I wish Westboro decided to go the route of Heaven’s Gate. It would be far from a tragedy.

  14. micklethepickle says: Jan 22, 2012 2:32 PM

Judging from the comments some people have made on articles about Joe Paterno’s death, the Westboro Baptist Church must have a ton of supporters. All I see is posters like “thatobnoxiousguy” talking about how villainous Joe Pa is for… *not* molesting children.

Then again, most Christians I know would feel right at home at WBC protest.

And remember – ALL Americans are protected by the 1st Amendment. So if you’re all so ‘patriotic’ you should be happy to see freedom alive and well in front of you.

  15. jason1214 says: Jan 22, 2012 2:32 PM

The WBC, is just one step away from being “Domestic” Terrorists. Rhetoric like this is no different than the filth the Taliban, Al Q, and others spew……

  16. mrslay1 says: Jan 22, 2012 2:36 PM

These people will never see the true kingdom of God. To be sure Joe PA forgives them as they (are to stupid to) know not what they do!

  17. vincentbojackson says: Jan 22, 2012 2:36 PM

Same people that picket the funerals of our fallen soldiers.

Unfortunately freedom of speech also protects the mentally disturbed and socially misguided.

Let’s all take comfort in the fact that after they’re done picketing they’ll be forced to return to their miserable lives.

  18. thraiderskin says: Jan 22, 2012 2:44 PM

  20. sharronh7327 says: Jan 22, 2012 2:48 PM

RIP Joe. My heart and prayers go out to the family of Joe. I pray that the Lord will help them through this trying time. From what I read he was an awesome, guy loved by many. We need more caring souls like this in our world.

  21. noaxetogrind says: Jan 22, 2012 2:54 PM

mickle, first of all I find it highly unlikely that you associate with many Christians so your qualitative opinion as to how “most Christians feel” is dubious at best considering your very limited anecdotal experience. Secondly, realizing that possibly you get easily confused, please understand that having the right to do something doesn’t make it the right thing to do. No one is saying they don’t have the right. What most rational people are saying is that it is beyond inappropriate. Dwell on that for awhile and see if it makes sense to you.

  22. thefiesty1 says: Jan 22, 2012 3:00 PM

Typical hypocrites. They are also the ones hiding in the back of the bar with their neighbors wife.

  23. centexhorn says: Jan 22, 2012 3:06 PM

jdillydawg, no, nobody needs to “pimp her out”. That’s disgusting. That’s called rape. Are you willing to conspire in someone else’s rape? The everyday misogyny you experience on the internet is truly appalling and sickening.

Stop saying that women should be raped.

  24. TxGrown says: Jan 22, 2012 3:08 PM

Well here you go thatobnoxiousguy and like minded haters! Here’s your chance to really stand up and be counted! The WBC wants YOU! So sign up and pick up a sign and march. Joe Paterno’s negligence is unforgivable of course. We all know that. But now you can really show your displeasure by joining forces with those who picket our heroes funerals. Do it because you really really care.

  25. lemmam says: Jan 22, 2012 3:08 PM

they’re too damn ugly to be hiding out with anyone . wbc are the scum of the earth

  26. thatobnoxiousguy says: Jan 22, 2012 3:21 PM

I do not support the Westboro Church actions.
Those who picket and protest soldiers funerals are not someone I endorse or approve.

Likewise, I do not approve of picketing at anyones’s funeral, no matter what wrongs said person may have committed.

That being said, Sandusky and Pervterno are certainly not on any moral persons sympathy list so don’t expect a condemnation from me against anybody that plans to picket the sicko that enabled Sandusky to add to his victim list.

The closet freaks like Blueblaze and TxGrown are just upset that they lost a member of their pedophilia club today, but it’s ok, they will soon be able to reunite with sandusky on conjugal visit weekends at the prison.

  28. lbijake says: Jan 22, 2012 3:26 PM

  29. micklethepickle says: Jan 22, 2012 3:30 PM

    “noaxetogrind” –

Since I live in America, the vast, vast, VAST majority of people I know are Christian. So yea – it’s pretty safe to say that I’m familiar with followers of that particular religion.

And it’s fine that people think the WBC is inappropriate – I happen to think the same thing. What’s hilarious, though, are the people who will say “look at those monster that don’t support our great country!” and in the same breath follow that up with “someone needs to shut them up!”

Well, what’s it going to be? This country was founded on the idea of free expression. Sounds like most of the people here are nothing more than outright traitors. What’s that the pro-war crowd used to say when W. was in office? Oh yea: “Love it or leave it!” LOL

  30. goforthanddie says: Jan 22, 2012 3:36 PM

    @blueinok:
Sadly yes, they are considered a real church and have tax-exempt status. They also aren’t affiliated with any other church on the planet.

  31. pastortodd78 says: Jan 22, 2012 3:43 PM

They picketed a funeral in my hometown in Oklahoma over a year ago. Someone slashed their tires and no one in the town would help them. They had to get help for over an hour away.

Also as a pastor this group greatly disgusts me, they need to take church out of their name and replace it with hate group.

  32. bigjdve says: Jan 22, 2012 3:56 PM

Something this church (that is supposed to be Christian) is forgetting.

The wage that sin pays is death, so in God’s eye, his slate is clean. That being said, he isn’t the one that committed the crime. It seems to be forgotten that it is Sandusky that is accused of crimes.

Could he, should he, have done more? Maybe, however that is a moral question that goes past the law. He stayed to the law. We don’t typically vilify people for following the law.

RIP – I hope you finally have some peace.

Joe will be long remembered for all the good he did for everyone involved in his life. After watching the tribute to Joe today on ESPN, his legacy is already being defined. Everyone knows Joe is not the one who should bear this load. The board knew about this issue and used Joe as the scape goat. Threw him right under the bus. They should have stuck by him and made a decision after the trial. Sandusky and the Board members must and should feel like sh**! What a buch of crap!

    —————————————————-
Not entirely true. Freedom of speech does not extend to ideas and ideals that if expounded on in a public forum has the propensity and or likelihood to incite riot like behavior or violence, or foreseeable injury to innocent parties. See yelling “Fire” in a theater.

They will have to get a permit and it will be denied on those grounds, which is a perfectly legal and reasonable denial.

  52. ukeone says: Jan 22, 2012 8:22 PM

    In regard to Westboro BC:

“Yea, they are greedy dogs (aka. Westboro BC)which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter”
    (Isaiah 56:11)

“Beware of false prophets (aka. Westboro BC), which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves … ”
    (Matthew 7:15).

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers (aka. @ Westboro BC) also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
    —2nd Corinthians 11:13-15

“For the time will come when they (@Westboro BC) will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.”
    (2nd Timothy 4:3)

The Bible speaks clearly of these fakes, these holier-than thou zealots who show themselves as God’s righteous; when instead, they are the very scum that Satan spews out in this, our world. They can speak all they want, as loud as they want… as we all know too well that they are hell’s choir! I hope all the well-wishers of Joe-Pa “chant-out loud massively enough to cover their vocal dung-heap because it’s our 1st Amendment right as well to make sure they are ‘not’ heard (and hopefully ‘not’ seen) at all!!!” Even their own clever lawyers will not be able to prevent all the PSU well-wishers from voicing out loud themselves & drowning-out these disgusting half-breeds. Cummon, PSU, make your voices heard & let them know their message of hate is not welcome in America (1st Amendment or not!)!

Sandusky should be charged with 50 counts of rape and 1 count of murder and will rot in prison for it wbc should picket at his funeral not at joepa
wbc is still a wicked church and if they every show there ass at paternos funeral i will have my shotgun ready.

Not that I codone violence, but how long will it take until a “sniper” takes these people out. This is less about JoePa, and more about the veterans being dishonored by this church. Yes they do have the right to free speech, However those rights also come with consequences. Those consequences are a direct result of their actions. At some point, the consequences will take care of this church. The posters which call JP a pedophile are just trying to get a rise out of the rest of us. He was not responsible for sanduskys actions. He definitely should have done more, and paid the price by his termination. I truely believe that he could not wrap his mind around what was being told to him (my 85 year old grandfather wouldn’t understand either). In hindsight he would likely have done things much differently. RIP JoePa

These WBC is not affiliated with any recognized Baptist association or fellowship, nor any other recognized Christian group for that matter. They do have IRS tax exemption (which they are fighting to keep). The hate-filled signs and spoken words from the leaders and members have truly discouraged many loved ones from attending their own American Heroes’ funerals over the past decade.

Though they sue to make sure they have First Amendment rights to protest and bring their hate filled rhetoric and signage, many on this thread have made some excellent suggestions. Fans can arrange a “white out” along the progression route, and maybe a few motorcycle clubs may provide some security. I know one motorcycle group out of South Louisiana comprised of retired (or no longer active) Navy Seals, who I think would be honored to provide security.

  60. callmecynical says: Jan 22, 2012 10:01 PM

If it please the gallery, I wish to offer a few hopefully salient points, as I view a very emotionally charged subject.
    I. The WBC will definitely be allowed to picket the event as previously adjucated by the U.S. Supreme Court decisions. While I find the WBC as despicable as the majority of posters, we should remember we live in a democracy that forces us to allow the ravings of deranged lunatics that accomplish little except to further their own agenda. Their message, albeit incendiary calling for “Death to fags” does not meet the criteria of the “Fire” in a crowded theatre.
II. Many respondents to JT’s post advocate violence, religion and retribution. I would state with near certainty none will act, as the anonymity of blogging/posting allows for threats and promises that carry more weight in the digital form than the physical. With that said, I sincerely wish/hope/pray that Mr. Phelps succumbs to a fate worse than death for his anti-human self-promoting views. Short of that, please consider counseling Mr. Phelps.

III. Finally, to Mr. John Taylor; I enjoy your writing, but I am cynical enough to suspect your article was posted as an attempt to gain postings, of which I am certainly guily. Perhaps we should not fan the flames of an inflammatory subject and encourage the inevitable hate language but perhaps take the high road. This is a rare instance in which we may declare, ‘If you ignore it, it will go away.
    Respectfully,
    Call Me Cynical

  61. dchssalo says: Jan 22, 2012 10:06 PM

It really saddens me that our rights as American’s are abused by people. Yes it is their right to say what they want and to make a peaceful protest but how, I mean SERIOUSLY HOW, can they call themselves “Americans” or “Christians” when they are praying for people to die (soldiers, etc.) and condemning fellow humans. Jesus didn’t condemn anyone. He loved all and was always willing to forgive. I’m assuming these WBC followers have been misguided and brain washed but how will they explain that when they go to “the clearing at the end of the path?”

  62. ranksarot says: Jan 22, 2012 10:10 PM

@arizonapetdoctor: that’s what they want you to think. but look at the record. look at deficits and national debt during Reagan/bush/bush. Don’t be fooled. They will spend as much or more than any dem. They just don’t want to pay for it. As long as taxes are low for them and their friends, who cares?

  63. arizonapetdoctor says: Jan 22, 2012 10:23 PM

@ranksarot. I am talking about the 95% of republicans out in the voting public whom have no true candidate to voice their opinions through. The vast majority of the republican party seem to lean towards fiscal conservatism and social moderation. The 5% on fox news do not speak for us, no more than the msnbc networks speak for the majority of the democrats. If you believe what they say about the other party the news media has sucessfully turned you into a talking head. It would not be an insurmountable ordeal to combine the middle ground of both parties (leaving out the talking heads) and finding a solution which will work for the 90% of us and not the 10% of the fanatics from both parties. Governments spend, that is their job. However, as constituents we should be telling them how to spend, and we are failing in do that by our petty name calling and fighting

  64. ranksarot says: Jan 22, 2012 10:48 PM

@arizonapetdoctor, I wish you were right about the 95%… Unfortunately, you’re not going to get that with any of the Republican candidates. There simply is no “fiscal conservatism” with this group. But there is plenty of the anti-gay, anti-immigrant, anti-black religious fanaticism which is 90% of the Westboro BC’s message (trying to stay on topic). Given that truth, there is not a 5% chance that while Mitt Romney, multi $100-millionaire pays 14 or 15% taxes, and I at $150-$200k pay 26 or 27% taxes, are ever going to balance the budget or pay down the debt. It’s a pipe dream. I agree with you about Fox News. But you woefully underestimate the number of Republicans who have fallen for their extremism. They are the Republican base now. I can only hope that’s why the Republican candidates say some of the crap that comes out of their mouths, and not because they actually believe it. Pay for what we spend. It’s not to much to ask.

First of all someone beat me to that obnoxiuos guy , with all the comments he has made , he could be the leader of this radical islamic group . As far as the person calling republicans pervs or christians pervs or having the same views as the wbc , you too must be a member of this group .
First of all I was born and raised a catholic which also puts me in the group of christians, and by no means do I or any member of my church or family share the views of the wbc.
And the fact that I come from a large family of men and woman who have served in the military and in some cases they have lost their lives doing so , and or have been wounded in combat including myself .
This wbc as they call them selves should be sent to guantanamo bay with the rest of the terrorsts that pray on the innocent and would be willing to bet that they are funded by terrorists.

Id like for wbc to meet the thousands of Penn State Students and alumni. Picketing anyones funeral is just low and dirty, regardless of who they are. Families still need peace and JoePa will have peace. WE ARE…. Forever, PENN STATE!

Where is James Jones and his kool-aid when you really need them?

    Solution for the Westboro morons:
Have plenty of tow trucks available and spotters to locate vehicles with Kansas plates. Tow their vehicles so they can’t interfere with the funeral. Have the police on-board with this. It should not be hard to do, considering Joe Pa is a legend in the state of Penn.

    RIP Jo Pa.

At other places where the WBC has protested, groups of military veterans on motorcycles have driven by on their thundering Harleys to drown out the noise of the WBC protesters. How angry do you think 40,000 PSU mourners will be when they see those sanctimonious WBC A-holes trying cause a fuss? I hope the news media gets plenty of footage of those A-holes getting torn new A-holes. They’ll all be going back to Kansas in ambulances. At least the ones that survive.

I wonder do the WBC church members know they will be burning in hell as well? After all they are Satanists. Maybe they will see Paterno there.

I wonder how many WBC members post on the various NewsVine blogs? From what I have read, there are hundreds and hundreds that harbor the same hatred for the man as these so-called church protestors. While I have no respect for these WBC people, I can hold them in higher regard for having the guts of their convictions in showing up and being recognized ~ ~ more so than for the many who hide in the cloak of anonymity to spew their venom against a great man. Paterno made a mistake ~ a huge one ~ and it will stain his legacy forever. Yet he is but one of the guilty that bears the burden for this sordid turn of events. If justice is to be served, WBC members should be greeted by Joe’s players ~ past and present ~ and made to feel “welcome,” if you get my drift.

Since you seem to be somehow or another justifying these people, I wonder, have you ever served in the military during a war or armed conflict.? Ever had a buddy die in front or next to you? Ever had to endure, coming home after 13 months fighting for your country or longer and had people spit on you?
These people are despicable and if you can somehow justify what they are doing, not just to Paterno, but the fighting men and women of this country who die for your freedom, you my friend do not think very maturely.
Freedom of speech is not as free as you think. It entails some responsibility by those using that freedom. The national cemetery are full of these people who died to give that freedom, to unfortunately some not deserving of it.

Just some info- Paterno served in WWII, so the WBC is once again disrespecting a veteran.

He was in the Army from 1944-45, which was during WWII, but I don’t know that he was actually deployed overseas.

A veteran nonetheless, nice mention bryan.

I’m from Topeka and I’ve had to walk past this POOR EXCUSE of a “Church” several times on my way to school. It really irritates me that Phelps pulls this crap, even worse that he is from my hometown, and spits his hate speech all over. This makes my community look bad, REALLY bad. Joe Paterno is one of the greatest if not THE GREATEST coach in the history of sports, it’s really sad that this hate group has nothing better to do. Many times we just build a physical “fence” made of people to shield people from the picketers. I hope something like this happens, JoePa does NOT deserve this!!
RIP Joe Paterno, you will be missed!!

Has anyone witnessed in the news today (on TV or internet) any depictions of WBC’s presence at Jo-Pa’s funeral? I was looking all over and couldn’t find anything. If WBC was snubbed from any publicity then HOORAY for the press (for finally getting something right—for a change). I sincerely hope they were ‘thoroughly ignored’ (as they should be from now on) & hope that the world will finally be able to go on in life without seeing or hearing anything about that devil’s den in that Kansas dung-heap called WBC. Go to HELL Phelps!!!

    ___

Summoned for military service after high school, he was training in New Jersey when World War II ended. After his 1946 discharge, he enrolled at Brown.

He still served…and intended to go if needed…which is far more than George W. Bush ever did.

If they hate the wonderful country in which they live, then maybe they need to pack up and be booted out! John 3:16 tells us how much God loves us these people have perverted the Word of God! God bless Joe Paterno and his family!
