Auburn president approves move to replace trees at Toomer’s Corner if needed

Auburn Trees Poisoned AP

Technically, the trees at Toomer’s Corner aren’t dead yet, but Auburn is planning as though the oak trees won’t be around much longer.

Earlier this week, Auburn president Jay Gogue approved the recommendation from the Committee to Determine the Future of Rolling Toomer’s Corner (yes, that exists) that if the trees don’t survive, a temporary set-up will be created where fans can roll another object while new trees are planted.

The recommendation came from a fan poll taken last year.

The new trees would already be fairly large in size. If new trees are planted, it may be 3-5 years before they can “handle the stress” of being rolled. What would be rolled while the new trees are being planted is yet to be determined.

But, dead or alive, the current trees at Toomer’s Corner could be rolled through 2012; after that, it’s less certain. Auburn’s Department of Horticulture has expressed doubts that the oak trees will last much longer than a year. A better assessment of the health of the trees will be taken in the spring.

The man accused of poisoning the oak trees, Harvey Updyke, is set to go to trial on March 5.

    So they can replace the trees. That should mean Mr Updyke, as stupid as he is, probably doesn’t deserve 10 years in jail for his jack-assery.

  2. Romulus says: Jan 25, 2012 5:15 PM

    How about rolling that statue in tuscalooser that the crimson rednecks love.

  3. thraiderskin says: Jan 25, 2012 5:25 PM

    I think 10 years is excessive, but the man has shown no contrition, like it was his right. That bugs me more than anything, people do stupid things, but usually after a day or two they look back and see their error. This guy is a d-bag who may have no concept he has done anything wrong. You can’t fix stupid, throw him away in a prison.

  4. brewcrewfan54 says: Jan 25, 2012 5:26 PM

    He’s show no contrition because that would be admitting guilt which wouldn’t help him at his trial.

  5. loripetty says: Jan 25, 2012 5:26 PM

    I’m surprised an Alabama fan didn’t come by to sexually assault the dying trees!

  6. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 5:35 PM

    @loripetty …

    The reason they have the money to replace the trees is because thousands of Alabama fans raised $50,000 for the care and/or replacement of trees they had no part in poisoning. Alabama fans are no more responsible for the lowlife actions of Harvey Updyke and the idiot at the Krystal than fans of whatever team you support are responsible for your classless posts. Grow up.

  7. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 5:41 PM

    Romulus, I’m sure it won’t be difficult to find something in the Auburn area for you to drape in reams of toilet paper to celebrate your team’s athletic achievements. It never has been a particularly respectful way to treat century-old oak trees … but to each his own. Thanks to the generous contributions of Alabama fans who had nothing to do with this one lone nut’s vandalism, you’ll have the funds to come up with something to keep your odd tradition going and to purchase mature replacement trees.

  8. patau61 says: Jan 25, 2012 5:47 PM

    Auburn is fully capable of replacing the trees not because of anything Bama fans or anyone else has done. But because we are an agricultural school. Don’t pat yourself on the back too much.
    As far as you sticking your nose up at the tradition of rolling some trees, I guess Auburn fans should instead claim multiple fictious national championships and praise a former figurehead who has been dead for decades.

  9. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 5:54 PM

    the fact that you want to give bama credit for replacing the trees while accepting none of the blame for what was done to them by a typical bama fan pretty much confirms that you’re a typical bama fan. if you donated any cash to the cause, ask for a refund. we don’t want your money.

  10. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 6:01 PM

    @patau61 …

    I’m not patting myself on the back. I’m reminding some viciously nasty people who chose this opportunity to tar an entire fanbase for the actions of one individual that thousands of Alabama fans gave their money to try and help them. If you don’t need that $50,000, then give it to those in Tuscaloosa left homeless from the tornadoes last year or those in other Alabama towns whose lives were shattered by similar storms this week.

    I apologize for taking shots at your traditions. It was knee-jerk reaction to people like Romulus and loripetty who want to damn all Alabama fans for the behavior of a couple of bad apples. All fan bases have them.

  11. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 6:03 PM

    @AuburnTigers34 …

    Why should I or any other Bama fan accept responsiblity for what one nut did to your trees? You belong in a loony bin next to Harvey Updyke’s. :roll:

    Like I said, you can send that check to Tuscaloosa where it’s needed to help real human suffering.

    You people are crazy.

  12. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 6:06 PM

    @thraiderskin …

    Actually, Harvey Updyke was on ESPN expressing remorse for his actions. Seemed a little strange since he’s pleading not guilty. But he’s not exactly playing with a full deck.

  13. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 6:16 PM

    you mean the same tornado victims that Chizik, his coaching staff, and the entire team went to assist right after the storms hit last year?

    Harvey Updyke is supposed to be an isolated case(according to you), as is the teabagger. but anyone that’s been exposed to bamathe same goes for the idiot with the giant bear bryant tattoo on his back and the drunk lady that was kissing all over Saban at the airport when he first landed in Tuscaloosa.

    but anyone that’s been exposed to bama’s fanbase knows that these nutjobs are the norm, not the exception.

    again, nobody from Auburn wants or needs anything from the likes of you and your jacked up fanbase.

  14. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 6:21 PM

    yeah, he showed remorse and apologized in that program… bama fans(for supposedly bringing shame and embarrassment to bama).

    but don’t let facts get in the way of your spin on this. harvey updyke and the teabagger might be “too full of bama”for your tase(though i seriously doubt it) but they’re part of your “family”. moight as well own up to it and embrace them. there are plenty of others just like them where they came from.

  15. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 6:25 PM

    one last thing, nobody asked you to take the blame for harvey updyke’s actions…but for you to claim that he’s from the lunatic fringe of your fanbase is a complete and total joke.

    and on top of it all, you want to claim that bama deserves credit for saving the trees. from the bottom of my heart, go **** yourself.

  16. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 6:28 PM

    auburntigers34 …

    I’ve more than condemned Harvey Updyke and the Krystal nut from the get-go. They’re not family to me in any sense of the word. I don’t behave like them or associate with people who behave like them. I don’t behave like that on the blogs. But you’re acting like that here, spewing all kinds of extremist nonsense about people you don’t know and condemning everyone who roots for Alabama with the same kind of language racists use to express their irrational hatreds. You’ve got problems. They’re yours. Not mine.

  17. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 6:31 PM

    racists? once again, go **** yourself.

    claiming that bama is the reason that Auburn can replace the trees is a very Updyke thing to do.

  18. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 6:32 PM

    @auburntigers34 …

    I didn’t claim Bama deserves credit for saving the trees. When your fans came onto the thread attacking all Bama fans for the behavior of one man, I pointed out that those Bama fans you’re ridiculing spent a lot of money trying to make up for the behavior of one sick individual. All I did was try to point out that you were wrong to damn everyone for one person’s behavior. Now you’re telling me to go f*ck myself. You really are emotionally unbalanced over football. Reading your comments, there’s absolutely no difference between your behavior and the crazy behavior of Harvey Updyke. There’s no telling what kind of vicious lunacy you’d do if given the chance.

  19. Deb says: Jan 25, 2012 6:33 PM

    I hope you get some help.

  20. brewcrewfan54 says: Jan 25, 2012 6:35 PM

    auburntiger, In trying to show how unbalanced the Alabama fans are you aren’t doing yourself as an Auburn fan any favors with your extreme attitude.

  21. normtide says: Jan 25, 2012 6:39 PM

    Harvey should and will go to jail.

    Stay classy AUtigers34. It is as much the little brother mentality as fanatic Bama fans. Your ego is so fragile, you burst at the seams at any mention of AU. AU sings about wreck tech, a homage to fans and players greasing train tracks to smite GT players. Poison trees are worse than that? And, you sing songs about it!! That would be an act of terror today. Everyone who has experienced the AU “Family” will tell you, they act like the youngest child, starved for attention and to be taken seriously, when everyone already does take you seriously. Poisoning trees is moronic, whether at AU or an abandoned lot. Harvey will spend a year and a day, but will be known as an idiot for the rest of his life.

  22. bangitfootball says: Jan 25, 2012 6:45 PM

    Have Harvey Updyke stand at Tommers Corner with his arms out after every Auburn win and let the fans roll him. 3 or 4 years of that should be enough punishment.

  23. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 6:56 PM

    for telling Deb to go **** herself? she obviously needs to get laid and i doubt that anyone else is up to the job….including the Krystal teabagger.

  24. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 7:00 PM

    btw, you said “The reason they have the money to replace the trees is because thousands of Alabama fans raised $50,000 for the care and/or replacement of trees they had no part in poisoning.”

    this is a lie. plain and simple. Auburn doesn’t need bama’s help. the trees would’ve been replaced without a cent being donated by bama fans or anyone else and 50k doesn’t even come close to covering the cost of replacing them.

  25. normtide says: Jan 25, 2012 7:03 PM

    Your Welcome anyway.

  26. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 7:03 PM

    i’m not on here to be an ambassador for Auburn. i only stopped by to call BS on Deb’s ridiculous posts in this thread. think what you want to about me and/or Auburn. but if you’re ever feeling frisky, feel free to go to a game in Auburn and Tuscaloosa wearing the colors of the visiting team and report back to us on how you were treated by the two fanbases.

  27. normtide says: Jan 25, 2012 7:07 PM

    Just DO NOT take a train into Auburn …

  28. brewcrewfan54 says: Jan 25, 2012 7:11 PM

    Auburntiger, If you’re proud of the fact that the home teams fans treat visiting teams fans crappy I’m sad for you.

  29. normtide says: Jan 25, 2012 7:14 PM

    He is just afraid Bama fans would treat you worse. Bama fans actually treat others with respect, been to many games, and sat next to many opposing fans. As an AU fan, he is just afraid you may put Bama above them in any category.

  30. olskool711 says: Jan 25, 2012 7:23 PM

    Settle down both of you before I get ticked and find a way to confiscate all ya’alls banjos.

    Forget the trees and spend the time coming up with an offense that fits in the 21’st century.

  31. auburntigers34 says: Jan 25, 2012 7:31 PM

    that’s not at all the point that i was trying to make. Auburn has a reputation for welcoming visiting fans with open arms. Alabama’s reputation is their rammer jammer cheer….and i guess you can add poisoning trees after losses and teabagging after wins to the list.

  32. imaduffer says: Jan 25, 2012 7:39 PM

    Throwing toilet paper onto tree seems kind of childish. But then again, what else is there to do in Alabama after a football game, except go get drunk and piss on a tree.

    auburntiger34 …

    I’m not BSing. I’m a lifelong Bama fan and have lifelong friends and family members who are Auburn fans. We’ve managed to watch games together without killing each other, cursing each other, or even exchanging a cross word. It’s called being civilized. I’m sorry you haven’t experienced that. Sorry … but given you’re behavior toward me, not too surprised.

  35. rolltide510 says: Jan 25, 2012 7:50 PM

    Cool thread, would read again.

    Unrelated, here’s a general rule of college football rivalries: the team on the losing end of the series record somehow always has the morally superior fanbase. I suppose it’s a coincidence.

    Therapy. Seriously. Before you end up sharing a cell with Harv.

  39. normtide says: Jan 25, 2012 8:09 PM

    To Auburn fans:
    Take your tarnished Nat’l Championship using a UF reject, liar, and thief in “Scam Newton”, and bury it at Toomers Corner. Wrap that crap trophy in toilet paper because that would be appropriate. I’m happy as hell that u of Alabama won the NC this season replacing your pathetic school at the top. Auburn is a pariah in college football, representing everything that is inappropriate. You’re the North Korea of college athletics. “conratulations”

  43. 1990tiger says: Jan 25, 2012 11:13 PM

    Wow! Things can get ugly around here quickly. Rather than throw insults around, let’s play a game. Guess who I am?

    Hi, nice to meet you. My name is ____. Did you know Bama fans gave Auburn $50K to save their trees? You didn’t? Well, they did. Bama fans saved Auburn University by giving them $50K to save their trees. In fact, Bama fans went without food for weeks just so they could give Auburn $50K to save their trees. My understanding is that they almost had to close the University down until Bama fans dug deep and gave Auburn $50K. Really, my understanding is that the entire town of Auburn almost went bankrupt until Bama fans sent $50K to Auburn. Some Bama fans even sold their cars and houses so they could sent $50K to Auburn. My understanding is that one Bama fan even withdrew his life savings so he could participate in Bama fans sending Auburn $50K. Auburn should really appreciate Bama fans sending them $50K. Bama fans never even asked Auburn for a “thank-you” when Bama fans sent Auburn $50K. That’s just the kind of people we are…….

    This really is meant as a joke (with just a slight jab) so I hope the person I am referring to doesn’t get too bent out of shape about this post.

  44. 1990tiger says: Jan 25, 2012 11:31 PM

    Do you really have that much hostility in you towards Auburn? Is it because we own your team?

  45. 1990tiger says: Jan 25, 2012 11:40 PM

    normtide says:

    AU sings about wreck tech, a homage to fans and players greasing train tracks to smite GT players…….And, you sing songs about it!! That would be an act of terror today.
    Really? That’s what you came up with? Really?

    Perhaps we should put all Auburn fans and current and former football players on the “Do Not Fly” list.

  46. jag72 says: Jan 26, 2012 8:45 AM

    Updyke deserves whatever he gets and maybe more. What is funny is that everyone overlooks that what Auburn was doing to the trees was killing them also. Powerwashing them down after the rollings? It was destroying them, but, that is okay? BTW – isn’t rolling sort of a little high schoolish? Maybe the “COLLEGE” students should grow up just a but – ya’ think?

  47. norcalirish says: Jan 26, 2012 8:50 AM

    I have to say, I’m really enjoying this insanity. Gets me in the mood.

    Quick story: I had the pleasure of taking in an Alabama game once and the folks down there couldn’t have been nicer. Most everywhere I went folks were offering up beer and food, and I indulged on the regular. (I did get heckled at the game by a wasted bro because I was wearing my Notre Dame Football shirt [class of 2008] at a Alabama/SJSU game, but after I explained ND’s all time record vs Alabama and poked fun at the many questionable “national championships” his team claimed The Bro settled down and offered me a drink). All and all, it was a good day. I even bought myself a little houndstooth hat, lol.

    Then the next day I went over to Auburn (on a Sunday), and, while the reception was a bit cooler, most were still nice. I snuck into the stadium and kicked it for a bit (I personally liked it better than Alabama’s), and, while I wasn’t too impressed with the Corner’s trees at the time (I bet they’re quite a sight after a big win over Alabama tho) I’m incredibly happy I got to see them before that retard poisoned them. (I do have to say though, I was extremely surprised that they weren’t protected in any way…one of my first thoughts was “wow…these things haven’t been vandalized?” Little did I know that a few months later….)

    But anyways, let’s focus on the positives. You guys have pretty good bbq, and the talent (read: ladies) level is pretty high. The campuses are fairly pretty, and the people (are for the most part) nice. Deb’s right: there’s always a few bad apples in the bunch, and you can’t slam an entire fan base (unless it’s msu or usc) just because of a few. 😉

    So, I’m looking forward in going back for an Iron Bowl one of these days. It’s an incredible tradition, and is one of the things that makes cfb so great. I think it’s fair to say that most folks are pulling for the trees to survive, myself certainly included. Here’s to another hundred years!

    And, naturally, now and forever, GO IRISH.

    More seriously, I hope the idiot that poisoned the tree gets slapped with a healthy jail sentence. I’m no Auburn fan, but I’ve been to Toomer’s Corner. It’s a cool place. It means something special to Auburn fans. And it should be respected accordingly. There’s no place in sports for ignorance and stupidity like what this clown pulled off.

    I have been around Auburn/Alabama football for over 50 years that I can remember. I grew up in Auburn and am a Auburn Graduate. I have many friends that graduated from Bama, and family members that played for Bama. In all these years of watching this fierce rivalry, I have never seen it stoup to this level. Harvey Updykes actions are symptomatic of someone who has his entire identity associated with Bama football. He is a sick person. Because he has shown little remorse for his actions, I hope they give him the maximum. If it were an Auburn fan who committed such a terrible act, they should get the maximum. This kind of stuff simply needs to stop!

    Son, you really need some help with your anger management. You sound like a very sore loser. I don’t have an inferiority disorder. My degree from AU has served me very well in my career.

    BTW, in every ranking I’ve seen for public universities, Alabama, Auburn AND Clemson all rank higher than South Carolina. What does that do to your inferiority complex?

    They don’t use the powerwasher to blast off the paper. They use it to get the paper wet so it falls off and disintegrates. It doesn’t damage the trees.
    I find it humorous how ‘outsiders’ seem to have an issue or feel they have to pass judgement on the rolling of Toomer’s Corner. It is a harmless and fun tradition mostly done by the younger kids who attend the games with their families. If you’ve never seen the trees after a big win, it really is kind of neat.

How about Clemson since you are an advocate of that school as well? Milking cows maybe? How to change the oil in a John Deere LT160 Tractor? How to plow a field when a machine isn’t available? @1990tiger …

    As I’ve told you before, I mention that Bama fans raised a lot of money on behalf of your tree-restoration project simply to point out that we had nothing to do with the lunatic behavior of one disturbed individual and have done everything possible to try to help. I’m sorry that bothers you and the other bitter Auburn fans posting here so much. Nevertheless, your determined efforts to trash and ridicule us for the actions of one person make you no better than he is. And your obsession with ridiculing the efforts of hundreds of good people to make up for what one nut did or for the handful that approve of what he did only show you to be small and petty.

    @nocalirish …

    Thanks for sharing your stories about the great people in both the Alabama and Auburn fanbases. Unfortunately, from the thumbs down you received, it appears few of those great fans spend much time on CFT.

  57. Deb says: Jan 26, 2012 4:53 PM

    @1990tiger …

    You and others posting here have spewed hatred and ridicule at the thousands of Alabama fans who condemned Updyke and raised thousands of dollars to try and help. Because I pointed out that they tried to help, the trash of Auburn told me to fuck off and that I needed to get laid but couldn’t even get a sex offender to do it–and got plenty of thumbs up. By your logic that Harvey Updyke represents all Alabama fans, guess I should assume all Auburn men are vulgar and abusive to any woman who disagrees with them while the rest of Auburn cheers them on and no one objects.

    It’s amazing you guys can see all the specks in everyone else’s eyes with the logs in yours.

  58. 1990tiger says: Jan 26, 2012 5:03 PM

    Was my “guess who I am” post that obvious? 😉 I was just having a bit of fun but I guess you took it personally. Point to one post I’ve made where I’ve made even a slight effort (much less a determined effort) to “trash and ridicule” Bama fans in general for the actions of Bama fan Harvey or where I ridicule the “efforts of hundreds of good people” (or “thousands” as you said in your earlier post). I do think the contribution was a thoughtful and generous gesture but I wouldn’t go so far as to characterize it as “everything possible to try to help”.

    As I’ve told you before, the sincerity of the donation from Bama fans diminishes each time one of them (cough, cough,….you) feels the need to remind Auburn fans of the donation or each time a picture or report surfaces of Bama fans treating Bama fan Harvey as a celebrity or hero. I don’t think Harvey Updick represents the Bama fan population in its entirety; however, I do think there are a measurable number of Bama fans who view him as a hero.

    Since my first attempt fell flat, I’ll take another stab at injecting some (admittedly sarcastic) humor into this thread:
    Which of the following would get reset more frequently: (a) the days without an arrest clock, or (b) the Deb hasn’t mentioned the $50K
    Bama fans raised for the Auburn trees clock.

  59. 1990tiger says: Jan 26, 2012 5:12 PM

    Let’s not escalate this to the next level. I did not say or encourage anything vulgur to be said to you nor did I agree with the tone this thread was taking when I first posted. In fact, I gave thumbs down to many of the posts that came before mine. I didn’t jump in with a post because by the time I did log onto this board, it seemed to have settled down a bit and I didn’t want to kick a hornet’s nest.

    Nor have I ever said that Updick or the teabagger represent all Bama fans.

    I can understand your displeasure at the vulgarities that were hurled at you but I had no part in it. That being said, if it makes you feel better to direct your anger towards me, I can take it.

  60. auburntigers34 says: Jan 26, 2012 5:29 PM

    let’s get the facts straight, Deb. you tried to imply that i’m a racist before i ever told you to go f*** yourself. only someone that’s truly delusional could even try to twist anything that i’ve said in this thread into something that was even marginally racist.

    fwiw, my sentiments toward you still stand. trying to turn this into a racial issue is beyond pathetic.

  61. Deb says: Jan 26, 2012 5:35 PM

    @1990tiger …

    Okay, the line about the arrest clock was funny.

    Only keep bringing it up because I feel like I have to keep apologizing for these idiots. Sigh. How would you like to have Harvey Updyke and that creepy guy be the current image of Auburn? People may talk about “Scam”–but at least he’s a world-class athlete, not a cretin. (Excuse my ignorance, but why do they call that guy a teabagger? Is the reason fit for print?)

    Mom and I were talking the other night, and she asked if I’m ever tempted to just say … “Look, I’m a Floridian. Stop asking me about those nuts!” Oh yes!! But out of loyalty to my dad and brother, she and I try not to do that 😀

    @auburntigers34 …

    You misunderstood my comment. I wasn’t talking about racism at all.

    You know how racist people who hate blacks are always saying “They all do this” and “They all do that”? My comment was that you were condemning Alabama fans with “the same kind of language racists use to express their irrational hatreds.” What I meant was that you saying things like “anyone that’s been exposed to Bama’s fanbase knows that these nutjobs are the norm” and “the likes of you.”

    You were using language that lumps all people together–the same way racists do. I was NOT saying that you are racist. This conversation doesn’t have anything do do with racism. I’m sorry you didn’t understand my meaning.

    You should also know that I don’t care what you think of me. But your behavior was uncalled for.

  63. auburntigers34 says: Jan 26, 2012 6:52 PM

    i never meant to imply that all Alabama fans are Harvey Updykes and Brian Downings…..just that it seems like bama has far more than their share of them.

    then there’s the fans that treat Updyke like a hero/martyr and, in Downings case, the other individuals that were obviously bama fans that were pretty much cheering him on.

    i have a lot of friends that are bama fans that aren’t, as Updyke like’s to refer to his condition “too full of bama” and i’m sure that there are plenty of others out there.

    i apologize for all of the gfy’s. i’m not going to lie, your “The reason they have the money to replace the trees is because thousands of Alabama fans raised $50,000 for the care and/or replacement of trees” really hit a nerve.

    50k isn’t a drop in the bucket, as far as the cost of replacing the trees goes. and since they’re not going to be able to use Live oaks this time around, i’m not even sure if “replaced” would be an appropriate term.

  64. lasseter1113 says: Jan 26, 2012 7:11 PM

    Oh my God, I am so sick of this. Why don’t you Auburn fans quit trying to constantly make us Alabama fans look bad by lumping us all together with these two criminal idiots? Why don’t you just say why your really mad? I’ll say it, 42-14!!! We have BRAGGING RIGHTS!!! Let me remind all of you this is COLLEGE FOOTBALL we are talking about here, not Jerry freakin’ Springer for God sake’s. The same people that you are so quick to come on here and ridicule are the same people that you held the door for this morning at the gas station or vice versa. The same people that you sit next to at church or your children’s PTA meetings. It’s not like Alabama fans live on one side of Alabama and Auburn fans live on the other. These are your neighbors and friends you are talking about. There are idiot’s and criminal’s in every college football fan base. Go into a prison right now and asked the prisoner’s who their favorite football team is and I bet you anything just about all college football teams would be very well represented. Harvey Updyke is a piece of crap and so is the tea bagger guy and they both deserve to be punished we can all agree on that. So can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE convict these two idiots and let’s get this stupid crap behind us and get back to talking about the real reason every one of you are here in the first place, COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!

    To 1990tiger:

    I can’t help but notice how you cannot seem to get along with anyone on this thread! Poor Deb has to put up with your vitriole and sophomoric comments as well as me. I find it difficult to believe someone from Rutgers’ would consider working for you. But the economy is what it is and either your father or father-in-law must have given you your “lofty position” b/c you couldn’t have possible attained it by yourself. Unless of course you are housed in an insane asylum. You’re the type of person who has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends. Consider me one of those. Now you appear to be out of toilet paper since you wrapped the last roll around your head. Head to Wal-Mart or Sam’s and stock up…’ll need it. Or you can use your Auburn degree….same as toilet paper.

  66. Deb says: Jan 26, 2012 9:15 PM

    @auburntigers34 …

    Thanks for the apology. I’m sorry for the misunderstanding on that. When you’re from the South, the word “racist” hits a nerve, too.

    I was reacting to being lumped in with Harvey and that other guy–whose behavior was really disturbing. I don’t understand why some ignorant people want their photos taken with that Updyke nut–he’s an embarrassment to decent Tide fans. And it would take a sociologist to explain the groupthink mentality of people who just stand by and giggle in situations like the one at the Krystal. But that behavior and worse mob mentality happens in all types of cultures and in much scarier situations. The sexual aspect to Downing’s behavior happens in all types of cultures, too. I’m sure some psychologist could explain it. But it’s creepy scary on so many levels.

    Unfortunately, every fan base has people who can’t draw the line–and sometimes that ends with people getting assaulted and killed over a sport. But most Bama fans are decent people just like most Auburn fans. And I was only teasing about my family. My dad’s from Alabama and my brother moved back there and married a Bama girl. But folks from Alabama really aren’t that odd compared to people like me from Florida … really 😉

    To Auburn1990 & 34:
    Winning with honor is something your university should strive for. I realize that winning at any cost is acceptable. But it isn’t. The Scam Newton affair has not done anything positive for your school. Most fans deplore Auburn and do feel the scam artist was as guilty as OJ. Winning with honor is a foreign concept to you. But what did you really win? The wrath of true and honest college football fans. Love that the Crimson Tide are the Nat’l. Champs. That’s a team that wins with honor.

  68. dmcgrann says: Jan 27, 2012 1:54 AM

    You know what? Most of the country doesn’t give a rat’s you-know-what. They see that Alabama had 32,000 or whatever fans celebrating their “National Championship” and most folks are wondering, “Jeez! Hope them Alabama trees can take the slapping of the fan’s genitals!”

    As far as Auburn is concerned, well, you folks have some problems, too. But, I don’t see any Auburn folks killing trees and doing some questionable sexual crap to other fans. At least not reported.

    Oh, the almighty SEC. WVU isn’t good enough to get in because of their fans. Well, probably not. But they don’t try to tell folks that they’re members of the Vanderbilt family. On the other hand, they ain’t Updykes, either.

  69. 1990tiger says: Jan 27, 2012 4:08 AM

    You really show your ignorance more and more with each post. I can understand how someone with your personality (disorder) would be in desperate need of friends but I can’t consider you a friend of mine.

    My Auburn degree the same as toilet paper? That really doesn’t even make sense. How long did it take you to think of that one?

  70. 1990tiger says: Jan 27, 2012 4:51 AM

    I understand your point regarding Updick and the teabagger (you will have to Google “teabagging”) but when I read your posts mentioning the $50K, it always seems like you are suggesting that while one fan may have gotten a little out of control, other Bama fans made up for his actions by sending some money to Auburn so the slate should be clear. I don’t think that is what you mean but it just comes across that way. You don’t need to apologize for those idiots any more than the Auburn football team or fanbase needs to apologize for those 4 idiots in Auburn who committed armed robbery.

    I’ve never considered Updick or the teabagger to be representative of the entire Bama fanbase but it doesn’t help the reputation of the Bama fanbase when you see/read about Bama fans treating Updick like a celebrity or a watch a video of a sizable group of Bama fans encouraging their fellow fan to accost an unconscious person.

    As far as Cam, I’ve always felt that what bothered people the most about him was his talent so they looked for something to “hate” him for. Granted, he did make some stupid decisions as a young man and his father didn’t do him any favors but Cam seems like he learned from the mistakes he made and is a better person for it.

  71. thegamecocker says: Jan 27, 2012 10:12 AM

    A tiger doesn’t change his stripes. The Newtons’ are cheats, liars, and thieves. Scam lied to the NCAA when he said he didn’t know anything about his daddy peddling him for CASH – that’s a liar in my book. He stole a computer while at U. of Fla – that’s a thief. He tried to buy grades by having others do papers / take home exams for him at Fla. That’s a cheater. Somewhere down the line he will screw up again and next time he will not be able to weasel his way out of it.

    As for Auburn, they have no idea about the concept of “WINNING WITH HONOR”. Not a clue.

  72. thegamecocker says: Jan 27, 2012 10:15 AM

    To Auburn1990:
    So who was it that put you in your “lofty position”, your father or father-in-law? You never did answer that one. You can’t even conduct your career with honor let alone the football team you root for. This is my last response to you, ya dope.

  73. norcalirish says: Jan 27, 2012 10:20 AM

    Deb, unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?) the iPad app doesn’t show thumbs up or down…but reading all of these comments has sure been amusing :)

  74. 1990tiger says: Jan 27, 2012 10:38 AM

    I didn’t respond to your question because it was such an ignorant accusation that I didn’t think it warranted a response. However, in an attempt to satisfy your moronic curiosity, I will tell you that I could only wish that my father or my FIL (who is deceased, thank-you) could have put me in my “lofty position” (as you term it). Unfortunately, neither of them are or were even remotely involved with the company I now work for. You know very little about me yet you assume I am where I am professionally because of a relative and you accuse me of conducting my career without honor (whatever the h#ll that is supposed to mean)?

    If you only knew how ignorant you sound in your posts. Whatever school you may have attended (btw, adding an apostrophe after “Rutgers” is not correct grammar) did not serve you well and you in turn, don’t reflect very well upon your fellow alums (assuming you did graduate as you claim).

    I can only hope that your last post to me will be just that. If it is, the world just got happier.

    My thing is IF the U of Alabama really was against Updyke and his assult of the tradition of Auburn sports and historical landmark. They would have not been parting with him at the NC game . They were treating him like a superstar not a crimal .So what does they say ..well that ..looks like a front that they care and are against what updyke did . underneath there smiling and saying yes Auburn Can you top that .. We one uped them with high fives all around. If they were so aginst it they would not allow or have anything to do with him or condone his actions. and yes be real Updyke did not do it like OJ did not kill his wife, and anthony did not kill her daughter.Their all just were good liers and have great lawers that circumvented the system of justics…. yes anything can be destoryed and replaced to a degree you home, your car but it is not the same and his Butt need to be in jail because he sure don’t look remorseful at all.. look more like the cat that ate the canary..

    The gamecocker makes no sense and really should think before he posts…. Here’s some things you should know about astronauts, bullet proof vests, microscopes, and others….Auburn’s contributions to your world!!
    Auburn-developed technologies and research include:
    An optical microscope that shows live cells in real time and that holds great promise in revolutionizing medical research.
    A microscope system that NASA is using on Antarctic expeditions.
    Antimicrobial coatings with potential to prevent diseases from spreading on contaminated surfaces.
    Bacteria-eliminating chemical technology currently marketed as a water purification process.
    Fabric that improves the effectiveness of bullet-proof vests worn by law enforcement personnel by stopping high-powered rifle bullets.
    A device that improves the operation and safety of automobile air-bags.
    Germ-killing rubber material.
    Asphalt that dramatically improves driving conditions.
    A drug-delivery system that aids in the treatment of muscular dystrophy and diabetes.
    Biodegradable food source fishing lures.
    A new egg-injected avian flu vaccine.
    Technologies for highway and bridge construction.
    Highly advanced filters used in ventilation systems and in high-level security systems.
    Food safety sensors.
    Lightweight air masks that filter out toxins and allow longer use by first responders.
    A popular and widely used flea pill for dogs.

    Deb, you also really offended me, said one thing and then went back on it, but later redeemed yourself… Just because someone makes a statement about Alabama fan does not always mean they are speaking of the whole, but it’s the easiest and shortest way of saying things most of the time and it shouldn’t be taken so sensitively…we are talking about a rivalry here and it comes with the territory. My mother’s side of the family has been in Auburn longer than the Toomer’s trees, but my father, on the other hand, is a Bear fan do I grew up in a split family, until we finally converted him. Auburn and Alabama fans are always going to take shots at each other, but it’s how things come to end that makes it okay like this post has done, except for the gamecock fan who doesn’t make any sense.

    I believe in Auburn and love it!! Rolling the trees is a tradition and one that is very AUsome for anyone who has experienced it. I honestly am blown away though that they actually let Updyke be part of anything relating to Alabama after the poisoning. If this is true, which this is the first that I have heard, then there is something seriously wrong with that!!! You can’t sit there and say you dont consider him a part of your family, but yet take his comments now, much less put him in the spotlight at the championship game giving him hi fives?!?! That looks as if you are claiming him and that would just be really disappointing. I will google that after this post to check the correctness of that….

  78. Deb says: Jan 27, 2012 2:10 PM

    @timmytruth & daisykatel …

    Neither the University nor any fan group associated with Alabama has invited or encouraged Harvey Updyke to participate in any Bama-related activities. The guy showed up in New Orleans the week of the championship game and was wandering around Bourbon Street followed by some reporters. Some Alabama fans spotted him and came over to get their photo taken with him. The cameras recorded about half a dozen nuts making a fuss over him. There were thousands of Alabama fans (including my family) in New Orleans for the game. Only a handful of idiots wanted a photo with this fool.

    He told one of the reporters he “thought” he might have a ticket to the game–which means he went down there without even having a way into the game and was just hoping to scalp or finagle a ticket after he got there. Every official organization connected to the school has condemned Updyke, fans have raised money to help Auburn, and people like me have condemned him all we can. But no one can stop him from going to New Orleans and wandering around Bourbon Street on a game weekend. And no one can stop a few nuts from wanting their photo taken with him–anymore than law enforcement can stop collectors from selling serial-killer memorabilia on e-bay. It’s free society, and people are free to be idiots if they want.

    You guys keep telling me that good fans like me don’t have to keep apologizing for the behavior of a handful of nuts. But every time I turn around, you’re talking about how Alabama and Alabama fans embraced Harvey Updyke. That is simply not true. He’s a hero to a handful of idiots. The university and the majority of fans hate what he did and wish he’d crawl under a rock.

  79. Deb says: Jan 27, 2012 2:28 PM

    @nocalirish …

    Suddenly an ipad sounds very appealing. The thumbs slow the loading of the page, let children have fun mocking condolences to players and coaches who’ve passed, and give twits a weapon to try and drive away commenters they don’t like but aren’t smart enough to debate. Other than that, I can’t find any sane use for them.

  80. Deb says: Jan 27, 2012 5:13 PM

    Incidentally, daisykatel, I resent all this “you, you, you” stuff. Even if the University of Alabama called him up to the podium during the awards celebration, he’s still not part of MY family in any sense of the word and I have not embraced him or quoted him or done ANYTHING but condemn him as a jackass since day one. Next time why don’t you do your googling before you jump on people :roll:

  81. 160hfalligatorhater says: Jan 31, 2012 1:17 AM

    Let me get this straight. A FOOTBALL game and then people in the SOUTH throw (and this the shocker) TOILET PAPER into a tree? I hope no one outside the United States KNOWS about this, they will surely think we are idiots or there are bad drugs or water where this is happening.

    Was I standing behind the door when Toilet Paper brains were being passed out? I must have missed that class on what to do with toilet paper, I’ve got an entirely different plan in mind. Wonder if they recycle the toilet paper. . . .

  82. 160hfalligatorhater says: Jan 31, 2012 1:24 AM

    In our state there is a southern town where everyone who lives in the town must be a gun owner. A city ordinance. Does not take much to figure out they are NOT thinking of toilet papering THEIR trees.

  83. thegamecocker says: Jan 31, 2012 8:47 AM

    To 160…
    Then they use a power-washer to remove the toilet paper. Ugh, do you think the power washer can do some damage to the leaves? or the branches? They aren’t real bright down there in West Georgia. But then nobody ever said they were.
