Report: Cristobal interviews for Rutgers vacancy

Just days after losing their head coach to the NFL, Rutgers could be on the verge of naming a replacement.

A source familiar with the RU coaching search confirmed to the Newark Star-Ledger that Mario Cristobal interviewed for the position Sunday with athletic director Tim Pernetti. The FIU head coach’s name has been connected to the vacancy within nanoseconds of Greg Schiano‘s departure for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Cristobal becomes at least the second person known to interview for the job; Saturday, Kyle Flood, who was named as the Scarlet Knights’ interim head coach, confirmed that he interviewed as well.

The source also told the Star-Ledger that a new head coach could be named as early as Monday or Tuesday. Pernetti said last week that he would like a new coach in place by National Signing Day Wednesday.

One coach who was initially thought to be high on Pernetti’s to-do list is Steve Addazio is likely now off the radar. A report surfaced earlier in the day stating that Addazio would remain at Temple as the Owls head coach.
