Rutgers makes Flood hiring official

One day ahead of National Signing Day, Rutgers has officially found its replacement for Greg Schiano.

Confirming reports that surfaced after FIU’s Mario Cristobal reportedly turned down its offer, RU announced in a press release that Kyle Flood has been named as the 29th head coach in the history of the Scarlet Knights. Flood had been named interim head coach in the wake of Schiano’s departure for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Flood will be officially introduced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

The 41-year-old long-time assistant has been at Rutgers since 2005, serving as the Scarlet Knights’ offensive line coach each season. In 2008, he was given the additional title of assistant head coach. He also served as co-offensive coordinator in 2009-10.

In its release, RU noted that the last time Rutgers promoted an assistant coach on staff to the head coaching position was the naming of Frank Burns to replace John Bateman in 1973 — and Burns became the winningest coach in school history.
