Part-time ‘Horns DL starter transferring

Even as Texas was in the midst of putting together a consensus top-three recruiting class, the Longhorns watched a part-time starter along the defensive line depart the football program.

Following up on rumors that had surfaced Wednesday morning, head coach Mack Brown confirmed that defensive tackle Calvin Howell has decided to transfer from the Longhorns. Brown said Howell’s decision was based on personal reasons.

There’s no word yet on where the San Antonio, Tex., product may continue his collegiate career.

In 2011, Howell started seven of the 13 games in which he played. Howell was credited with 16 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.

A four-star member of UT’s 2009 recruiting class, Howell was the No. 7 player at his position in the country and the No. 8 player at any position in the state of Texas.
