Just two weeks after he was hired by West Virginia to coach what was expected to be the linebackers spot, Mike Smith has decided to go back to the New York Jets, WVU announced today.
No reason was given for the move, but hard feelings don’t appear to be present between Smith and WVU coach Dana Holgorsen; the two are close friends from their days at Texas Tech when Smith was a player and Holgorsen an assistant.
Smith is expected to regain his previous job of coaching linebackers. The move leaves WVU with, again, two vacant defensive spots to fill. Joe DeForest is the only new hire for Holgorsen since defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel and two assistants left for Arizona.
