Frat fight nets Wazzu LB assault charge, dismissal

Just over two months on the job, Mike Leach has his first electric-closet-worthy off-field incident with which to deal. And, as it turns out, the head coach has brought the dismissal hammer with him to the Cougars.

KREM-TV in Pullman is reporting that linebacker C.J. Mizell was arrested over the weekend following an incident at a campus fraternity house. While the details are fairly scant at this point in time, Mizell was allegedly involved in a physical altercation at the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and charged with fourth-degree assault as a result.

The Spokane Spokesman-Review subsequently delved into some of the details that led to the arrest, which also included a trespassing charge in addition to the assault charge:

Pullman Police Sergeant Dan Dornes said police were called at approximately 12:24 a.m. Sunday after Mizell allegedly tried to enter a party at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house. When Mizell was denied entry, he allegedly “punched one of the guys several times,” Dornes said.

Mizell fled the scene but was arrested Sunday, cited, booked and released.

Tuesday afternoon, Wazzu announced in a press release that Mizell “is not being retained for violation of team policy.”

In 2011, Mizell was fourth on the Cougars in tackles and second in sacks with three. He ended the season atop Wazzu’s depth chart at middle linebacker.
