Demoted following the 2011 season, Wyoming’s erstwhile defensive coordinator is leaving the program.
In a press release, Wyoming announced that defensive coordinator-turned-linebackers coach Marty English has decided to take his leave of the Cowboys to accept a position with fellow Mountain West member Colorado State. While the release merely stated that English had “accepted coaching position” with CSU, he will become CSU’s new defensive line coach.
“We want to thank Marty for his contributions to the success of our program during his time here,” said Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen in a statement. “Marty was a big part of our success these last three years. We wish him all the best in his future.”
English had spent the past nine seasons in Laramie, the last three as coordinator.
The move to the Rams will serve as a homecoming of sorts as English graduated from Northern Colorado and coached at his alma mater from 1987-2002, the year prior to his arrival at Wyoming.
“For nine years, my family called Wyoming home,” said English. “My children graduated from high school in Laramie, and it will always have a special place in our hearts. The people of Wyoming are great people, and the support and passion they have for their university is outstanding. My family and I want to thank everyone in Wyoming for their support through the years.
“I also want to thank all the players who played their hearts out for us. Their dedication was what led to our success in going to three bowl games and winning two.”
In a subsequent press release, CSU confirmed the English hiring as well as announcing the rest of McElwain’s first rams coaching staff:
