Passed up for a chance in the NFL by former Rutgers wide receivers coach P.J. Fleck, Northern Illinois has found a replacement at offensive coordinator for the departed Matt Canada.
NIU announced today that former Northwestern (2001-06) and Minnesota (2007-08) offensive coordinator Mike Dunbar would be calling the offensive shots for the Huskies. Most recently, though, Dunbar was the OC at New Mexico State. He abruptly retired from that spot roughly 11 months ago.
“I am very excited to bring Mike Dunbar to Northern Illinois as our offensive coordinator,” coach Dave Doeren said. “Mike brings 25 years of play-calling experience, coupled with 12 years of head coaching experience. I had to compete against Mike four different times as a defensive coach – twice at Kansas and twice at Wisconsin – and I always came away with a great appreciation and respect for how good of an offensive coach he truly is.”
Canada left NIU to take the OC job at Wisconsin.
