Report: Highest-rated unsigned recruit to opt for Terps

A little more than a week after National Signing Day, Maryland could be on the verge of landing the biggest fish still remaining in the recruiting pool.

Citing a source with knowledge of the recruit’s plans, the Washington Post is reporting that wide receiver Stefon Diggs is expected to announce later on today that he will sign with the Terps. Diggs had planned to make his decision live on television Friday at 10 p.m. ET, but those plans have been scuttled; instead, the local product is expected to make his decision known at 6 p.m. ET at Good Counsel (Md.) High School.

If Diggs signs with the Terps, and given the amount of attrition the program’s suffered in just the past few months, it would be a huge on-paper get for Randy Edsall. Not only would the coach be getting a receiver rated as the No. 2 player at his position in the country by the three major recruiting services, he would be keeping such a talented player from leaving his own state.

In addition to Maryland, schools such as Auburn, Florida and Ohio State have long been thought to be the front-runners, perhaps even more so than the home-state school for the latter two programs.

Earlier this week, Auburn offered a 2013 scholarship to one of Diggs’ junior teammates. Two of Diggs’ senior teammates signed Letters of Intent with Maryland last week.

In summing up his potential destinations, Diggs wrote on his Twitter feed Thursday night that “Floridas hot I love weather and people ...Umd hometown ... Ohio state great place.. auburn a family”. He then added, “can’t go wrong with my decision.”
