Sumlin fills final A&M coaching hole

Exactly two months to the day Texas A&M confirmed his hiring as head coach, Kevin Sumlin has officially completed his first Aggies coaching staff.

Following up on reports that had surfaced earlier this month, the Aggies confirmed Friday that Matt Wallerstedt has been hired as linebackers coach.

“Matt has done a great job at the Air Force Academy and he will be a great addition to our staff,” Sumlin said. “He is another coach on our staff with coordinator experience as well as experience serving as a recruiting coordinator.”

Wallerstedt spent the past two seasons as Air Force’s defensive coordinator after replacing Tim DeRuyter, who left the Falcons to take the same job with the Aggies in 2010. DeRuyter is now the head coach at Fresno State.

Among his coaching stops was a two-year stint at Kansas State in the middle of last decade.
