Dude even if it is ALL true, it does not even come close to SMU. If you think it does you don't know the SMU situation very well. Slush funds to pay players initiated by the University itself vs. a rogue booster spending other people's money so he could hang with UM football players is way different.

The only real comparison as I said before is to Boise State. The worst suspension for Boise received more $ in illegal benefits than O.Vernon from the the U.....and that was in Idaho.

UM has already suffered, and is lucky to have Al Golden. The "slap on the wrist" talk is just bitter OSU, UNC and USC fans who's problems were institutional and way more outrageous. ie. house in L.A. for players family, head coaches trying to cover things up, assistant coaches openly and admittedly doing outlandish things. none of which happened at the U.

But those things happen all day in the SEC, but it is so huge there, they all keep it hush hush.

thank you for setting that other bozo straight about players seeking "better developement" for the NFL elsewhere. Not sure what that guy has been paying attention to.

UM is tops if not the best in all categories of successful players in the NFL. Obscure fact during Superbowl was they led the league in Superbowl TDs scored.

Shapiro and Yahoo deserve no more coverage.

I think the issue is that you're posing a hypothetical that is (by all in-depth accounts) entirely impossible.

I agree in general with the ideas of 'what if some of it is true', but it's looking like 'some' is realistically 'less than 1%' in this guys' case.

Case in point: the 2011 players that were suspended. Shapiro was claiming all sorts of lavish parties, strippers, gifts, etc. When the NCAA investigated, they found (for the most part) a dinner tab that had been picked up. In the most egregious case (Olivier Vernon), they found that Vernon had been in the guys' private suite for a home game (I think that alone was considered to be worth 800$). I forget what the rest of the $1300-worth consisted of, but the main point is that what *actually* occurred is well short of what Shapiro claims.

And this wasn't just the NCAA doing a whitewash. They dinged players for "50$ worth of equipment from the athletic department" as a violation. That's a t-shirt and an extra pair of gloves.

We are looking at it under the premise that they are true... I totally agree that they are innocent, but If some of these allegations are true, then what? The comments about a slap on the wrist is what I'm talking about, to me, that implies you all are looking at this as mostly true. Again, I absolutely don't want to lose Miami to half-pint jack ass with hurt feelings, but i'm not going to sit here and listen how everyone else got a slap on the wrist, when there is no comparison to these two events, by sheer scale alone. So again, how am I wrong in my previous statement, should these allegations be true?

I just think this problem is going to gradually get worse. These players get a scholarship which includes full-tuition and room-and-board if they want to live on campus for four-years. But, in reality these kids are being overused and overworked. As a former manager of a Division One basketball team, the players are the only people not reaping the benefits of their hard work. I understand a college degree is great, but, when you are bringing in 1,000,000 dollars plus in your sport, why don't they deserve some of that?

thraiderskin,

Being that we live in the USA and one needs to have 100% proof that allegations towards a person, or program in this case, need to be accurate. Having a bunch of receipts and saying "This is what I did with them" isn't enough. Having pictures of you partying with them isn't enough. Now if you combine the two, having pictures of them taking the handouts, then that's 100% proof.

Too bad everyone is still going to hate on a program that no matter how bad they are, like they are now, they're STILL everyone's National Championship game.

Why does everyone start pointing to other schools as some sort of justification for why "the U" should only recieve a slap on the wrist, how stupid are some of you? This man was running on the field with the players during their enterances, he "claims" to have influenced kids to go to Miami with money and "outings", he was an extremely visible figure at that institution. There is simply no comparison other than maybe SMU and I'm starting to think maybe that might not be close. I don't want Miami or any other school to ever get the death penalty, but if there was ever a dictionary entry case for it, Miami might be it. If you don't agree with me, explain to me how I'm wrong, tell me how the coaches and school officials didn't notice the little turd on the field and on campus? Educate me how this relates to property for tatoos, or paying the rent on a player's family's home, hell show how this massive list of former and current players stacks up to that ONE guy at Boise? I can tell some of you are terrified about what is going to happen to a great pro-factory, but there is no need to throw out bogus claims that they should get a slap on the wrist like "everyone" else.

"Miami was good when they started recruiting the South Florida region that most coaches and schools stayed away from. Good? I'd say a decade of dominance & barely a seasons worth of L's is a bit more than 'good'. Better football development? Seriously?
Shapiro is a CONVICTED LIAR. I doubt the school is concerned about anything he has to say because PROVING any of it will be tough to do. Are they innocent? Probably not. Is it as bad as Shapiro will TRY to make it out to be? Probably not.

"tonystrong", couldn't agree with your assessment more. This guy's 15 minutes of fame is about to expire.
This is a guy who thought he was going to bring down a program. After he realized he couldn't and that at the end of the day, UM will suffer consequences somewhere in the middle of what USC and Ohio St. received he is now grasping for straws and making the story he already told bigger and more elaborate. He really thought he was going to bring UM down but he can't because the NCAA will never hand out the death penalty again and certainly not to a program with the history of Miami. Guy is a joke and that top 10 recruiting class Miami brought in this past season just goes to show how much he's brought the program down LMAO!! Guy is just mad because he gave out handouts to all the players to look cool (other peoples money mind you) and when he needed a handout for his legal team, no one wanted to help him. Bitter guy. Deserves everything he's gotten and more!

They probably should be punished severely, but I don't think they will be - and I could care less.

Miami was good when they started recruiting the South Florida region that most coaches and schools stayed away from. Over the years, the players from these areas (especially the elite ones) realized they could go to better schools with better football development (for the NFL), more playing time and in some cases better academics (whaa?). Tie that with the rise of UCF, USF, FIU, FAU (not big time programs but still D-1) and renaissance of UF and FSU, and Miami has a tough road ahead as it is. They don't even have their own stadium and can't get many fans to come to their games.

It's different when schools like Ohio State get off like nothing even happened, and get a coach who is shadier than the one he replaced and has clear issues that still exist in it's athletic department.

It's tough to take much of what this guy says seriously anymore. First there was the chasm between the investigated allegations and what *actually* occurred (see the suspensions from Fall '11).

Then there are statements like this from the article:
"Incredibly, he says of himself, "I'm more of a victim than a Ponzi schemer and assailant." The federal government doesn't see it that way."

I wonder if Charles Robinson is starting to realize he was duped as well?

Jimbo....

that is how it is reported. But UMs worst suspension to O. Vernon was for around $1,000 in unpermissable benefits.

Do the research. Boise had a player with an equal illegal benefits tab over $1,000.

Here is the real question....$1,000 is Boise vs. $1,000 on south beach....shouldn't they triple the Boise kids penalty???

It doesn't matter if nobody cares about the sport the illegal benefits happened in, the penalty is the same....and that is my point about UM situation. Morons yelling for the death penalty on networks like ESPN have made it look far worse.
