Butch Jones ‘promotes’ linebackers coach to defensive coordinator

Following the announcement that Cincinnati co-defensive coordinator Tim Banks would be the sole DC for Illinois under Tim Beckman, Bearcats coach Butch Jones has announced a similar defensive promotion as well.

UC announced today that linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator John Jancek will take the only title as DC for the Bearcats defense. But keeping in the spirit of “everyone’s a coordinator”, Jancek will work with defensive line coach Steve Stripling, who is now the defensive run game coordinator and associate head coach Kerry Coombs, who will now be the defensive passing game coordinator.

So, yeah. That’s still a promotion. I think. I mean, I thought Dunder Mifflin worked better with two co-managers.

Additionally, Jones has hired Roy Manning, a former Cincinnati grad assistant, to coach outside linebackers.

“We have experienced coaches who are great teachers on and off the field and are among the best in college football,” Jones said in a statement. “It’s our job to develop these young student-athletes to be the best football players, the best students and the best people they can possibly be. And, when they finish their careers here at the University of Cincinnati, we want to make sure they leave here better people.”
