Pitt loses offensive coordinator to the NFL

On Jan. 7, former Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst officially announced the hiring of a handful of UW assistants, including Bob Bostad, to his new Pittsburgh coaching staff.

Less than two months later, Chryst is now reportedly in the market for a replacement for Bostad.

According to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com, Bostad is leaving his position as Chryst’s offensive coordinator/offensive line coach for the OL job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bostad’s new boss will be Greg Schiano, who left Rutgers for the Bucs last month.

Pitt subsequently confirmed Bostad’s departure for the Bucs, also announcing that Joe Rudolph will become the team’s coordinator. Additionally, Jim Heuber, who had previously been assigned to coach the tight ends, will slide over and take on the offensive line. Rudolph will add TEs to his responsibilities as well.

“Joe Rudolph and Jim Hueber will be tremendous assets in their new assignments,” Chryst said in a statement. “Joe and I worked closely on the offensive side of the ball at Wisconsin. He has a thorough knowledge of our systems and what we want to achieve offensively.

“Jim has coached some of the finest linemen in the game, pro and college. He is tremendously accomplished as a teacher of offensive line play, and his overall experience as a coach benefits our entire staff and program.”

Bostad becomes the third assistant at the collegiate level in 2011 hired by Schiano, including Ohio State’s Bill Sheridan late this past week. Schiano had also pursued Virginia offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Bostad, also rumored to be of interest to the Chicago Bears, had spent the past six season with the Badgers and was widely regarded as one of the best line coaches in the game.
