Mardi Gras float gloats over BCS title

Alabama Crimson Tide's Richardson holds up the trophy with teammate Kirkpatrick after they defeated the LSU Tigers during the NCAA BCS National Championship college football game in New Orleans Reuters

It’s officially been six weeks to the day since Alabama shut out LSU and took home the Tide’s second BCS championship in three years. Exactly when is it an appropriate to time to move on?

Not yet, apparently.

Some decided to put a crimson spin on a Mardi Gras parade* last Friday that featured THIS FLOAT commemorating the Tide’s 21-0 clubbing of the Tigers. Or, for LSU fans, it probably seems a lot more like gloating than commemorating.

(*note: I use the term “parade” loosely. There was a smallish tractor pulling the float, soooo…..)

Although, the float does a pretty good job of lampooning local radio personality Bobby Hebert, father of LSU lineman T-Bob Hebert and self-proclaimed voice of the fans. Hebert was, to put it lightly, critical of Miles during the BCS championship post-game press conference.

Another portion of the float depicts Alabama’s elephant guarding the 50-yard line, representing the Tide’s stout defense that didn’t allow LSU past midfield until late in the game.

Interestingly enough, there was no float reenacting a certain “post-game celebration” between an Alabama and unconscious LSU fan. Must not have made the cut.

But what gets me more than anything is the fact that Alabama has claimed 14 national titles. At what point do people start getting bored with it?

“Congratulations, Alabama! You just won the BCS championship!”

“Yeah, we know.”

Anyway, Troll Tide!

(Hat tip: Throw the Flag blog. And, in a separate note, apologies. I was informed that the float was not constructed by Alabama fans, and thus it’s perfectly acceptable for Bama fans far and wide to lampoon me in any way they see fit.)

The rude Bama fans need to get a life and remember what goes aroun will come back and bite you in the ass. They’re only doin this for attention and if we (LSU fans) had done something so crazy they’d be fumein at the point to where they’d be havin a stroke.

isn’t that from “Le Krewe d’Etat”? If so, it’s more about the Mardi Gras sentiment and that’s “krewe’s willingness to mock everything than about Bama vs LSU.

Get tired of it? What else is there to do, that’s legal, in Alabama?

  10. thraiderskin says: Feb 20, 2012 11:52 AM

I think it is funny, a little classless, but what can LSU possible say or do about it, its not like Alabama has a huge party that tons of people come too. Also, its nice to see that SEC teams still don’t like each other, usually there is a major kiss fest on here, its borderline embarrassing.

  11. timh1955 says: Feb 20, 2012 12:45 PM

I have no problem at all with the float. I saw so many posts from LSU fans after the first game saying how great LSU was and how Les Miles’ was the greatest coach in college football history and how they (LSU) were SO much better than Bama. Also, if you watched the pregame coverage of the NCG when the teams for working out on the field prior to the game you saw how a group of the LSU players came over to the Bama sideline and got in their face and started doing their victory dance in front of them. Now LSU knows who REALLY is the best team in the country and they also should have no doubt who has the best coach.

    ROLL TIDE!

Alabama should put out shirts with that elephant guarding the 50. It doesn’t get any better than that!!! ROLL TIDE

    Let’s address that ego…

To borrow from South Park, Bama’s road to the title went something like:

    Step 1) Lose your division.
    Step 2) …
Step 3) Win BCS title game

Well done. Says more about the BCS title game than it does about your football team.

  17. timh1955 says: Feb 20, 2012 10:28 PM

rubbernilly – The BCS title game was set up so that the two best teams (#1 and #2) play for the NC. It has nothing to do with who won the division. Also keep in mind that in the first game Alabama only lost by three points to your team and there were several questionable calls. Alabama won that game statistically as they played better than LSU. At the end of the NCG the only question was why was LSU in the NCG in the first place as they were a total embarrassment to the SEC.

Let ‘em celebrate . . . gloat, if you will. Every dog has his day.

    timh1955…

I didn’t have a team in the BCS title game. Couldn’t care less about either school. If I have a horse in this race at all, it’s the Anti-BCS horse.

I’ve stopped referring to the BCS title game as a National Championship. It’s not. It’s a title handed out by a system that resembled figure skating judging more than it does objective, on field measurables.

    You know, like the score.

I don’t buy into the paradigm that the two best schools play in the BCS any more than I buy into the paradigm that the strength of two teams can be accurately judged in some way *other* than meeting on the field.

After losing to LSU, the question should not have been, “OK, so Bama is worse, but… just *how* much worse?”

I wouldn’t have had a problem with Bama getting into a post-season playoff bracket… coming in as some sort of wild-card. But instead, they backed into the game while LSU had to play one extra game in the interim.

It’s like the reverse of an NFL bye. How does that make sense?

(To which, following the South Park reference, the BCS-Gnomes return to the plan, as if it’s self-explanatory…)

    Step 1) Lose your division.
    Step 2) …
Step 3) Win BCS title game

  20. helenh777 says: Feb 21, 2012 7:35 AM

In the first game Alabama had the worst kickers in the history of football. In the second game it was as if they had all new kickers. I have to say I have never seen such a transformation. Hats off to the coaches. I almost feel like they could have coached me to kick field goals. Now that would be a miracle.

No matter Alabama was the best overall team in both games. No amount of hog wash can made that fact go away.

If they had played another team they would have beaten them worse than they did LSU. At least LSU had a great defense. They simply got the big heads and they thought about how great they were instead of how to beat Bama. No amount of sour grapes can make LSU or any other team better than Alabama. If you want to try to beat them next year, win all your games. Do not loose to a 6-6 team than end up 7-6. Talk on the field instead of here.

  22. sirmixalotalotalot says: Feb 21, 2012 9:08 AM

Who cares? Alabama won the BCS game and therefore gets to brag. Despite losing earlier in the year to LSU, Alabama was the better overall team and would win 7/10 games vs. LSU most likely.

Let them brag now and have their fun. Next year is a new year and karma could pay them a visit

  23. helenh777 says: Feb 21, 2012 11:13 AM

It is not Karma, it is man’s ego that tears them down everytime. Long before Genesis 1:2 Satan thought to put himself above God. Thus, an earth without form and void. LSU bragged constantly of how great they were. No one had a chance with them. Clemson thought WVA was way beneath them. Va. Tech thought they were way better than Clemson. Everytime you think no one can equal you, watch out. That goes for every team. I saw my mountaineers do that many times. Like with USF and Louisville.

If you want a little arm chair quarterbacking. Just work hard, always give 100%. Never look down at anyone. They may be looking down at you tomorrow, if you do. I know that was a Mardi Gras float, however, I still think Alabama should make up a shirt with the elephant guarding the 50. After all they gave us less touchdowns in a year than Clemson did in one game. They have a right to brag a little, but they had better get back to business come spring practice or they will go down also.

I’d have a problem with that kind of in-your-face display of unsportsmanship if Alabama had anything to do with it. But the unsportsmanship was LSU on LSU. So the only thing I have a problem with is the loudmouth LSU fans blaming it on Bama. Nothing unusual there. And I’m sorry Ben was too lazy to follow his own link, scan the accompanying story, and see that it had nothing to do with Alabama fans before he decided to slam us with the “Troll Tide” bit and the oft-repeated idiocy about the sex offender at the Krystal–because God knows all Alabama fans are responsible for one sex offender. And if Bama fans had built that float, those two things would have equated in adult minds … razzing people about a game and committing a sex offense.

Yeah, Ben, that was nice of you to apologize and all … while leaving the slams and associated links intact. Rings so sincere.

Is there not one loyal fan of any one or combination of schools who can say that they’d just let snide remarks and any type of in your face comments not get to you when one of your opponents see fit to cause a bit of embarrasment to you, as you know you’d be if the tables were reversed? I’m just asking and not wanting to start another Holy War.

I made a mistake up above when I said do not get beaten by a 6-6 team that end up 7-6. Should have been end up 6-7. That really was a bad loss.
But you can not make it better by downing another team.

Deb, that was apparent from the beginning, but you know how the Bubbas and the Bozos work . . .

That Krewe is notorious for doing that sort of thing. There were probably similar floats in the Spanish Town Mardi Gras parade.

Would you believe they don’t even know when Mardi Gras is up here in Central Kentucky?

  33. helenh777 says: Feb 23, 2012 11:42 PM

I think everyone knows who did the float. It just doesn’t seem to matter. We are going to hear forever, that Alabama did not deserve to be in the National Championship. The truth is no one else did.I am very tired of hearing how some do not like Alabama. Then why not tell how great the school you do like is. Downing Alabama or any other school does not make yours better.

  34. Deb says: Feb 24, 2012 11:40 AM

    @Tom …

I don’t have as much time to spend on the blogs right now and was late to this story. But I was stunned to see this article. How could Ben Kercheval think for even a nanosecond that the University of Alabama or any of its boosters would PAY to put an “Up Yours” float in the New Orleans Mardi Gras parade? Are you kidding? Despite his jab at the tractor (has he ever seen Mardi Gras floats–this isn’t the Tournament of Roses parade), this was a relatively elaborate float, not a bunch of drunk students in the back of a pickup.

Alabama has won championships before and beaten LSU before and never put floats in the Mardi Gras parade. Even if the article Ben linked hadn’t clearly stated this was the work of a Louisiana lampooning group, that should have been obvious–especially given local hard feelings toward Les Miles.

I love the guys here at CFT, but Ben’s anti-Bama sarcasm has been showing for a while now. This time he was so anxious to toss in yet another Krystal reference and “Troll Tide” that he let it get in the way of common sense and cursory fact-checking.

Central Kentucky, huh? They know what it is in Central Florida–every restaurant and amusement park runs a Mardi Gras theme. Anything for the tourists :D
