Mack Brown says he needs two QB’s ‘ready to play’ for spring

When it comes to his quarterback situation, Mack Brown is the most interesting coach in college football. He doesn’t always talk about his signal callers, but when he does, he prefers to say as little as possible.

The reasons could be myriad. Brown’s been known to tap his protective, and somewhat motherly, spirit when it comes to his quarterbacks. Or, perhaps the QB battle between David Ash and Case McCoy is just that tight. It was dead even all of 2011 after Brown finally went Ol’ Yeller on Garrett Gilbert’s starting reps, and it stayed that way up until Texas’ 21-10 Holiday Bowl win over Cal.

Only then did it look like Ash maybe, possibly had a leg up on McCoy heading into spring practice.

Oh, by the way, that started today for the Longhorns. As media gathered around Brown for Q&A, it made total sense that the competition for the most important position in football at one of the biggest programs in the country would be questioned.

There just wasn’t a definitive answer. Not yet.

“As far as our short-term goals for the spring, we need to get two quarterbacks ready to play, and we would like to see David and Case continue to improve,” Brown said.

Of course, it is still the first day. Texas’ Orange-White game is over a month away on April 1. But no matter who takes the field first, Brown won’t be fooling anyone that day. UT’s depth chart isn’t released until the fall and Brown’s shown before he has zero issue keeping position battles low-profile.

Until then, stay curious, my friends.
